My turn......I got out of the third day and went straight the next morning to Rockford where the hotel had no internet. Go figure. Sunday was good too......but I agree with someone about the fact that a few less people could have been squeezed into Union Park. Sunday was relatively hot and the lawn was totally brown and the ball fields like sandboxes. I guess the city never got to water down the park. There were times the crush of people was pretty unbelievable. I was just glad I got to sell records. As a result I got to see one of the guys from Califone browse our crates, I got to bro

I saw a copy of Pure Pop yesterday at the record sale at Pitchfork for $10. My copy was $2 in a cheapy bin at one of my favorite record stores. Nick has always been a big XRT artist in general, particularly the material off Labour of Love. Obviously the newer albums haven't sold as well, being dad rock and all.....Nick has said in interviews that he no longer has to be current, just make music he likes and if it sells fine and if not fine. He has made a ton of money as a producer, etc., so he is pretty comfortable in his "old age". LouieB

Theologians was in heavy rotation back when AGIB was released. At this point XRT knows Wilco is pretty acceptable to its audience, though REM still gets far more play as do a whole group of XRT artists who get played adnauseum. You can be sure that the new Smashing Pumpkins will get a ton of play (we heard one of their new songs last night in fact on the way home from Pitchfork.) LouieB

Okay day two... First off the logo for this fest bears a striking resemblance to the color scheme and some design elements from the Eagles album On the Border... Fun day, but I find these these festivals more like an all you can eat buffet; some of the music is great, some is mediocre and some is better left alone before you get too full. Pub rock is actually a term from the 70s, but Brits certainly loved the 50s/60s rockbilly it is based on. The Jesus of Cool/Now Pop is not really similar, but the not different either. The EP with Rockpile is an Everly Brothers covers thing, which is fun and also shows the roots of this music. It is rarely found with the LP version anymore. Breaking glass has a writing credit to Steve Goulding, who played on the album and is a great drummer and turned up with the Mekons and the Waco Brothers. Beat me to it....I am writing after a night sleep, but I remember what happened. I was not going to Pitchfork, but got a call at the last minute from an aquaintanced named Carter who is a record dealer. As a result I got a free ticket to all three days and will be selling LPs with him during that time and catching some acts. Yesterday started nice and mellow and built into a crazed packed crowd by the time Sonic Youth came on. So look for me between Touch and Go and Drag city selling LPs out of milk crates. Stuff is pretty reasonable, but much of the better stuff has already been sold. I c

Rosie and I have a joke about WXREM, but lately they have been playing alot of the Cure. I like both REM and the Cure, but there are days that XRT plays such a short play list it is nauseating. They have this incredible record library (supposedly) but it is amazing the limited number of artists they play and even the limited number of cuts by those same artists. Friday I'm in Love is a great song, but really.... LouieB

Yes, he did those things, as did many many others during those years. But Woody is far more famous now than he was in his own time. Actually he wasn't an early leader for workers rights. There was en entire labor movement that was already in place when he came along including the Knights of Labor, the IWW, the AFL, the CIO, the united mine workers (Mother Jones), Steelworkers, Auto Workers, etc. etc. Woody was a relatively minor player. We remember him fondlly because he wrote some enduring songs to go along with these movements. Actually his personal life had nothing to do with anything
