  1. It is so weird...despite being camped out in Springfield (this now being my 6th of 13 days) I feel great, sleeping through the night, and just figuring things will get so much better. I don't cringe when getting an email from my new boss and have yet to see my old (current) boss despite being just down the hall. Life is good. LouieB
  2. I didn't realize this was a package deal with both albums, plus DVD. I can't imagine buying this since I have the two original albums. LouieB
  3. Agreed.....that is not my point... Opening bands get very little respect (Califone being the one group I saw open for Wilco that actually garnered some well deserved attention.) I was just expressing that Low's low key performing style may not work very well in getting people's attention during what is usually a pretty tough slot. LouieB
  4. The Left Banke was from the US of A, not Britain, but certainly was in a long line of bands taking British music, that was based on US music and making it American again. Walk Away Rene is one of the greatest songs ever. LouieB
  5. Go Yardbirds.....their stock has fallen in recent years, but they were one of the best. My fave is Arthur from the Kinks. LouieB
  6. There are some fine compilations...The Kink Kronicles is excellent I think. Very representative of the Reprise years. See we do agree somewhat, I also think the Kinks are kinda kinky. They are not your typical blues/rockabilly/rock outfit from England, they are more sophisticated and somewhat more strange than that. LouieB

    ELO

I always think of the Randy Newman song about ELO....also for some reason I also think of the Sex Pistols EMI, which has nothing to do with ELO. LouieB So do tell..how great was it?? Did Jay Bennett show up? I am so pissed I was out of town. LouieB

    ELO

As part of the Ed Burch event? Ed is a big ELO fan. LouieB
  9. I somewhat disagree.... I think the Kinks do have a somewhat different sound than most of the British Invasion bands of the early 60s and developed a more quirky sound by the late 60s, which carried on into the 70s. They were a singles band like every other band of that era, but developed the conceptual album more completely than most other groups, with the exception of the Who. Frankly if I never hear the song Lola again it will be too soon. There are some Kinks songs that get too much airplay and others that are some of the greatest songs ever written (Waterloo Sunset, Victoria, etc.)
  10. Personally I love The Who.... Sure they have gotten a whole ton more exposure than anyone besides the Beatles and the Stones, but their entire body of work has lasted a long time. The Kinks are a bit more of an aquired taste. I like them too and Ray Davies is a very fine songwriter. I guess Time of the Season (What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich like me?) may be the Sloop John B of Odessey and Oracles; a kinda lame song (single) among more important material. LouieB
  11. I like Low, but having seen them lately I do believe they will get eaten alive as an opening act. LouieB
  12. I have not heard this "classic" album but I have heard Time of the Seson about 4 trillion times (just heard it last at a restaurant that plays oldies) over the years and frankly the song is kind of lame all in all. Listen to the words sometime. I plan to play the entire album for the first time in my life sometime this week. LouieB
  13. # Audio CD (March 26, 1998)# Original Release Date: 1968 # Number of Discs: 1 # Label: Big Beat UK Figures there would be a new one come out just as i get around to buying it. Somehow it is really really hard for me to think that this album is all that important. I mean come on..The Zombies?? I will let you know though. It has both the mono and stereo mixes....whatever. LouieB
  14. I just got a copy in the mail after years of not really caring... LouieB
  15. This was a very long time ago, I was still a teenager. LouieB
  16. I even contacted someone about tickets, but I am on a crazy two week run in Springfield, so it just won't be possible and also the other reason is that Rosie's cousin is graduating from Northwestern that night and it really would be bad form to run out on that event to see Wilco....soon though. LouieB
  17. Made it to the late show and it was a gas.... LouieB
  18. Sadly I will miss the Schuba's show. LouieB
  19. From the back page of the Entertainment section in the Chicago Trib today. LouieB POP MACHINE Does VW deal make Wilco a sellout? By Mark Caro Tribune entertainment reporter Published June 10, 2007 We've played the "Is this a sellout?" game several times in Pop Machine, but this latest round may be the most puzzling. The subject was Chicago's own beloved Wilco, a band known for doing things its own way, always expanding its boundaries, never repeating itself or catering to fashion. Now Wilco has a new album out, the relatively low-key and lilting "Sky Blue Sky," and songs from it are ap
  20. I may have to remind her that people are doing this...seems like only yesterday... LouieB
  21. A-man and I are on the same page on this.... (New Riders were a fun band....) The dividing line on this is somewhere in the late 80s at least, whereas teh 70s was the follow-up to what had been going on with the Burrittos and Byrds, as well as bands like Marshall Tucker and Poco and the like, as well as the Outlaw movement which was Willie and Waylon and the Boys (and a few girls as well.) Combining country with punk is what some of the bands in the 80s did, such as the Mekons, the Beat Farmers, Lone Justice, etc. Actually it was Joe Ely who opened with the Clash, resulting in his firs
  22. Having done 2 of 12 days in Springfield, I feel pretty good. Met some of my new coworkers the other day and they were really nice and laid back. So only 15 more days in prison, which will include a couple off to see Wilco (need tix at Northhampton anyone??) and then I get to learn something new. I can tell you that I am feeling a bit like I wll be cut off from my old office friends, but that is just an issue I will have to deal with. LouieB
  23. Townes may be the god-father of alt.country, but back in the 70s when he was getting started there was no such thing, he was simply one more guy from Texas trying to make it as a singer and songwriter. In fact country rock was still a reasonable term and those records on Tomato were all sort of in that vein (sort of over produced by todays standards.) If Townes is alt.country (which he isn't really) so are his contemporaries like Guy Clark, all of the Flatlander guys, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, etc. etc. Most of them were just trying to get by and make a living in music. LouieB
  24. I agree with Sam..go with 2Cow only because they are some of the hardest working mofos in show biz at the moment. LouieB
  25. Sadly I will be out of town...or WAS I out of town...what the heck week is this anyway... Yea, next Monday I am back in Springfield on my two week straight camp-out there. Give Ed my regards...good luck to him in Texas, I hope he does well there. LouieB
