  1. Ah yes trickle down economics at its best. Someone forgot to look at their balance sheet ....... arg now the Titanic is sinking. Poor poor investment bankers. I'm gonna drink a beer for them.
  2. rereading Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five
  3. underrated and mostly unknown album is "801 Live" a group that Brian Eno toured with in the 70s after his time in Roxy Music. Great live cuts of Eno favorites and a couple of cover songs.
  4. fyi Love Hurts was not written by Gram Parson but by the great Boudleux Bryant (who wrote it for the Everly Brothers)....great songwriter.... hhhmmmm love songs... Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney has always been one of my favorites.
  5. IMO their absurd directions were a strength, a willingness to step out into the unknown and experiment a lot. Sometimes with horrible results, granted! The Byrds for me are hard to judge as a band because they were barely a band. The original lineup was toast after their first couple of albums & they tended to cover a lot of songs on their albums. They did some great music (my faves are The Notorious Byrds Brothers and Sweetheart of the Rodeo), but are in different arena (to me) than The Doors. Seriously I think the Byrds are underrated as a group that re-molded American music---it
  6. Maybe, but not too many *famous* ones. The Rolling Stones, VU, The Doors, ... hmmm... The Seeds? I don't really think the Seeds qualify. My point was only that the Doors were mining very similar artistic terrain as VU. Ooof .. and comparing them to the Byrds, well, where the heck is the comparison? Except that The Byrds very much influenced Love....and the Love was the band that The Doors aspired to be.
  7. How is it preposterous? Let's see ... blues, pop, folk, jazz influence mixed with dark lyrical themes and *cough* poetry - mid sixties bands .... who could fit those bills?
  8. I like the Doors. Overhyped for sure, but not overrated ... in fact most reasonable rock critics realize their strengths and weaknesses as a band. Here was a band that combined rock, jazz, blues, & pop with arty pretentions .... actually not too far off from what the Velvet Underground did. The Byrds were awesome in their own way. This thread totally seems Apples and Oranges to me.
  9. nick cave and the bad seeds aztec camera bruce springsteen (nebraska particularly) lou reed (new york) the replacements the violent femmes nope, no good music in the 80s

  14. yeah i am very jittery about this stuff at the moment, could be in for a real bumpy ride this year as far as the economy goes. the market is making needed adjustments, i'm just hoping it doesn't become a panic type of situation though. on a personal level though, i'm doing ok, for once in my life i think i have an actual net worth.
  15. at the request of a poster here I asked the portland folks organizing the informal service to include remembrances and thoughts from vc-ers here. if you are in portland and want to attend, check out the sweetadeline link and pm lex for details about the service. edit: see the post above for info! ack.
  16. no no, I don't think it is a joke. I know the person who made the post (she wouldn't joke about something like this) & have met nat jane in the past --- I don't think any joking is going on here. she also sweetly gave me one of her tinfoil sculptures. In fact I learned about Via Chicago because Natalie invited me to begin posting here years ago. condolences to her friends and family.
  17. I do not know if this the right forum for this, but I wanted folks to know about the recent passing of natalie jane, a longtime wilco poster and fan. This is a posting from the Sweetaddy forum, a friend posted this: natalie jane, a long-time sweetaddy poster, passed away on thursday here in portland. shes been a poster since 2002, but hasnt been as active in the past few years. were not certain yet what, exactly, was the cause of her death. she had been ailing a bit in the past few weeks, but we were taking care of her and she seemed to be doing better. nat had just moved back to portland
  18. i'm curious about how folks on this board are feeling about the economy now. did you spend less than usual at christmas? are you worried about the coming year economy-wise?
  19. : i didn't mean to sound snide or mean or anything there .... yes, check out the hearoes .. or whatever works best. it took me a while to get used to wearing the plugs and also rehearsing, but you will adjust if you persist using them. good luck.
  20. get custom made plugs. i've been in bands all my life -- eratically wearing ear plugs. last year, at age 36 i developed tinnitus, constant ringing in my right ear. it will never be 'cured' -- there really is not a cure. however, it did cause me to get custom plugs, which i wished i had gotten years ago. when you think about it, if music is one of your chief pleasures in life, why would you want to endanger that by being 'too cool' to wear earplugs?
  21. could try walter carlos soundtrack to a clockwork orange, really the first large selling moog album, and a terrific work.
  22. Sun Kil Moon (add to the 'artists that want to sound like neil youg' list)
