Sho Bud is a pretty well known brand for them. The pedal steel player in my old band had one w/ 2 necks (for 2 different tunings, one was more of a 'hawaiian' tuning). edit: oops .. you wanted lap not pedal.

look into a schecter corsair if you want to save some money but get a quality semi-hollowbody

neat Super 8 footage of their tour w/ commentary by a band member

i doubt the $$ amounts to a whole lot (after split amongst members). i just was reading that Grandaddy netted something like $50k for the use of their song in a commercial. jason lytle split it up to the band members as a sort of 'thanks guys' before the band broke up.
-
ok .. i see your point. i'd say his solo stuff adhered mostly to trad country styles. i mean got nashville cats to be his studio players.
-
I don't think Gram and the International Submarine Band's "The Older Boys" sounds very 'traditional country'

"You better, You bet" by the Who, references "old T.Rex" a couple of times

I guess I already made my point. wilco has 3 choices: stay where they are (no radioplay, cult fanbase) play the Payola game to try to get radioplay (unlikely) license to TV or movies (hey, wilco actually gets to make a few dollars and gain exposure to a wider audience) gee, if i was the artist here it would seem like a no brainer. no band wants to linger in obscurity.
-
whether licensed or not it's the convergence of art and commerce. sure, wilco doesn't know what ads are playing on a station, but wilco, the station, and the advertiser are all in bed with each other helping each other to make money. there are differences for sure between the vw commercial and a commercial radio station; but the concept is quite similar: wilco is helping out vw, vw is helping out wilco. i guess i see the same scenario with a commercial radio station. and citing the Doors as a sterling example? one of the most commercial bands in history .. even if they didn't sell to
-
still no one answered my question: what is the difference of a wilco song in a vw commercial or being played on a commercial radio station? it's a wilco song, then a commercial for a car dealership / night club / coca cola / whatever. perhaps the purists out there think that wilco should stop seeking radio play and become purely an NPR band. oh wait, NPR accepts corporate contributions and sponsorships too. i guess they have sold out as well.

revolution in the head is great though it's the only one i've read. you probably really get a better sense of the the beatles' story by watching the anthology documentary
-
And what is the difference if the commercial is on tv or on your local classic radio station?

do yourself a favor and buy Dillard and Clark's "The Fantastic Expidition of Dillard and Clark" immediately.

If by seeking to expand their fanbase and increase exposure for their art is a "sell out", then I suppose they have. A band in Wilco's position ... a cult band with little to no radio play has 2 choices in today's scenario: continue to play to the existing fanbase or try to get more exposure. That's done through 3 channels by almost EVERY indie band these days - television shows, commercials, and movies. Why is that? Because radio is next to dead being a prisoner of the clear-channels out there. Because wilco doesn't fit big radio's current format. Get used to it, you'll see more
