You should open this mix with Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down" from 4-Way Street. Young's banter before it, "here's a song that's guaranteed to bring you down. ... " is the perfect opener for such a mix.

"How many is a brazilian?" *rimshot* (man, in a way I'll miss having him to kick around.... but I think I'll get over it.) -
Jeffery Tambor says the movie has been given the green-light. Edit: I just realized I posted essentially the same thing in July! I guess we wait for someone a bit more reliable than Mr. Tambor to go public.

As someone who has hoped and prayed for viable GOP candidate (for my views) for my entire voting life, THAT is what scares me! -
Your 8th Birthday by Cloud Cult is simultaneously both heart-wrenchingly sad and filled with hope and optimism. When Craig Minowa wails his deceased son's name "Cayden" during the chorus, i choke up even having heard the song seemingly hundreds of times.

If Obama proves me wrong and I want an alternative in four years, I am afraid my option will be Palin or someone of her ilk as opposed to someone more of the Goldwater/Lincoln brand of conservatism. -

Isn't that completely subjective? I think Obama is a far better candidate than McCain for how I feel the country should be run over the next 4-8 years. Add the complete tickets and its laughable. Your mileage may vary, but to write off everyone that voted for Obama as being duped by a well-run campaign (which is what you seem to imply) is pretty insulting. -

Right and it seems unlikely Hispanics voted for Obama because he is black. There is a sort of friction between Hispanics and African Americans. It was actually viewed early in the primary cycle as something that Obama would have to overcome. A quick search turned up this article, but I'm sure there is more commentary out there on this. -

I don't know why I'm jumping into this. This election is SOOO last week, but.... If 95% of African-Americans voted for Obama, how does that compare with how that population votes in any old election. My understand was African-Americans vote Dem in lopsided numbers every election, not just when a black guy is running. Let's not forget that Jesse Jackson and Alan Keyes have run for President and didn't even come close. I'm sure turn-out among African-Americans was up, but that to me would not indicate to me that he was elected (let alone elected in a Bush-Dukakis-like landslide) because he was -

I think the difference between the auto industry and the financial industry is, it appears, that the collapse of the financial industry would have stemmed the flow of capital drastically impacted just about every facet of our economy. There is no doubt that is employers as large as the Big 3 were to collapse, we would all feel some impact, but not near the impact of of the financial industry. That said, ECON 101 says less productive aspects of an economy must be released to provide resources for more productive aspects. Imagine if we had bailed out the horse drawn carriage industry when the au

Because Radiohead isn't scheduled to release an album next year? -
Yeah, honestly the only thing I ever use my optical drive for is burning mixes for friends. Other than that, I use thumb drives.

Sidenote: I forget who it was but someone made the joke about the First Pooch "pals around with terriers." FWIW, Bill Maher stole your joke (unless you stole it from him) on Real Time. -
Yeah we realize that. None of the "netbooks" we are looking at have internal optical drives either. Again, she is pretty sure she doesn't need one as it is a secondary PC for her and she rarely uses the optical drive anyway. I would love to hear from anyone who has a laptop without an optical drive, though, to see if they miss it.

Well she's an attorney. She has a desktop in her office, but occasionally needs a laptop for depositions, etc. Also, she would use it when working from home, but this is usually not all that intensive work. Again, this is using MS Office, not anything with high graphics demands. Plus (and this is a big plus), we are planning an extended international trip (heavy duty travel, not checked bags type vacation) next year for our honeymoon. The ability to upload pictures, surf the web, update a blog and email friends and family is about all we'd need to do and durability and portability are crucial.

Thanks El! That was helpful. We looked a t a few laptops this weekend and she's leaning towards a netbook. Does anyone own one? She attracted to the size and price. In the little bit of playing around with the keyboard we did, its small size didn't bother her. Again this won't be a primary computer for her. Also she seems to not care about the DVD drive (she says she never uses the one she has on her regular computer, but I'm curious if she'd miss it if it were gone. Finally, I don;t think the low power would be an issue for her as she doesn't do anything graphics-intensive. Anyone have any

I know CO was overwhelmingly Obama amongst young voters as well. I don't know why they don't have any data. I'd be interested to see how that compares to other Presidential election years. I think it is pretty common for young voters to vote Dem no matter who is running. You ever heard the old saying: if you're under 30 and don't vote Democrat, you've got no heart; if you're over 30 and don't vote Republican, you've got no brain. (I've got no brain)
