What's the rarest record or memorabilia you have from any band?
W(TF) replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
There's also the flukey dumb vinyl "rarities", like misplaced labels. I think my copy of Neil Young's Comes A Time has the Side 1 label on both sides of the record. I wonder what that's worth! -

I have a ton of vinyl (>2000) but not much of it is rare. Most of my more valuable records are classicals, a few jazz (Mosaic box sets and such). As far as rare/collectible rock, not a lot. I have mint original pressings of Tommy, DSOTM, The Mugwumps, that sort of thing. I have a mint White Album (The Beatles) that is a fairly early mono pressing, I believe it's a 2nd pressing. Paid $20 for that and it's probably worth $100 or so. I have a Hendrix purple box set from the first run, too. -
It's not such absurd imagery. An aquarium drinker is a fish in a tank. "I'm an American aquarium drinker" is just a more elegant sounding analogy. I think it makes perfect sense, just not in a literal or traditional sense. Like saying "I'm free" ('American'), free to swim around this pretty place and suck water, coz I don't know what else to do. I hope the water's clean and I wonder whose amusement I was put here for. The tie-in verse adds "self-absorbed" to the deluded state -- I assassin down the avenue. Jeff could've said "I look great strutting through the Mall, I feel free". But h

I wasn't so crazy about this thread either, it has a whiff of Grade 8 science lab and dissecting frogs in the name of research. But if anything, now I think it shows (again) that Tweedy is a really unique writer. Even his flubs are interesting lyrics.

Wow, I didn't know you could be a Wilco fan and not LOVE that line! It's such a classic. Ah well, different strokes..

I just sold my guitar to someone you might know...
W(TF) replied to groovingdan's topic in Solid State Technology
Nice. Maybe you should send a VC message in the box with it. Bit of ebay stealth detective work- it looks like he's bought two other lap steel guitars lately.. -
Really? I love that line. The only line on SBS that bugs me a little is "I believe in locomotion." I don't hate it though, I just think YAMF would have been a little more perfect with a different line there. It's still the best song on the album.

We won't ever know.

I'm not a total stranger to the guitar...had a Ibanez LP clone as a teen and a Yamaha folk as a young adult, but I haven't played in a long time, for a bunch of reasons. Actually still have the Yam FG but my daughter has coopted it and it now sports nylon strings, to make it easier for her to learn on (not my idea!). It doesn't even want to stay in tune. Anyway, I feel like getting an electric now, and taking some lessons with a guy I know. But my budget is only $200 or so. Amp can come a bit later. What do you guys suggest? I was looking at some Jay Turser models, the prices seem good

The easiest way in Windows is just hit your print screen button, and paste into Paint. (you might have to switch your printer off first, if you have one connected) Then just crop and save it as a JPG.

Do a search on pagerank and no-follow tags. There are ways you can appease the Googlebeast.

Torrent link for the entire show. If you make it past the first Bright Eyes tune, M.Ward and Jim James show up.. Good stuff.

I don't know what kind of financial troubles these mags had, but it may be that they weren't doing everything they could to run it as a business..? For a case in point, pick up a copy of The Atlantic - a highbrow newsmagazine that has been a mainstay in US culture for a long time. What's interesting is their advertising base, in addition to the usual Chevron, Allstate, Cunard Lines, and ads from book publishers, you'll find ads like Bose Headphones, "Erase Wrinkles Without Botox", "America's first Silver Dollar", "Exercise in exactly 4 minutes per day", "Yankee Stadium Cufflinks", "Delicious

For some reason the most hysterical MA-related anecdote I've read was this, "...On May 14, 2000, Jeff Tweedy played the Noise Pop Festival at Double Door in a concert that polarized Wilco fans. Natalie Merchant joined the band onstage, but left after Tweedy requested that she perform Utah Phillips' murder ballad "Rock Salt and Nails". " (from the wikipedia Loose Fur page) I don't know why, but I laughed out loud when I read this. What's the story on that show??

What happened is that you opened a can of worms because of the bad blood between Bragg and Jeff/Jay that goes back to the recording sessions, and apparently has never been resolved. Bragg called Jay a fucker, and Jeff's standard description of Bragg now is 'full of shit'. blah blah Why people call Bragg an asshole, I don't know. Being a Wilco fan doesn't predispose me to that kind of generalization..but that's just me.

That's an interesting take. I've watched MITS a couple of times recently, what I thought is that Jeff definitely 'stole' the scenes he was in. I'm not sure it made Billy look like an idiot, but Tweedy did come across as a more interesting figure. Maybe the filmmaker was infatuated, or maybe the camera just loves Jeff Tweedy?

I heard some and was sure it was Jim James...I went straight over to amg to try and figure out if this was a MMJ side project!

Another pro-Bragg voice here. I wouldn't be without his MA contributions, they're mostly excellent and many of them feature Wilco to boot. Actually, of nearly all the ones Wilco did on MA1-2, I have live versions that I enjoy a lot more -- so I probably enjoy the studio Bragg ones more than the studio Wilco ones now.

I'll admit, I started the thread and haven't read it all either. I knew the Knack would get mentioned tho...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Jimmy Buffett must be the King of all the one-hit wonders. He took one very mediocre song and has built a freakin' empire on it. Resorts, restaurants, and whatever else. I don't get it.

Fair enough. But you did imply that Nonesuch was better/smarter/whatever than the others. When in fact, maybe they're just more well connected or have savvy upper management. Or faster, savvier bank managers. In the bio I quoted, I took 'eclectic' to mean obscure -- niche stuff that was confined geographically so that you wouldn't get a chance to hear it broadly, but that deserved a chance to expand beyond a local scene. That's all, no more no less. To what extent Nonesuch has 'made' their roster well-known, or vice versa, I really don't know. They are a WB subsidiary, so the r

Pearl Jam made some decent music, I just can't get past what a truly awful singer Vedder is. I have nothing against the guy, until he starts singing..then I'm well and fully offended. Yeah I am grumpy today.

Well....ummm. When Wilco signed with Nonesuch, they were already an internationally established act. Given the number of labels bidding for YHF at the time, I can't even see how Nonesuch was especially insightful, much less visionary. And if you look at their original mission-- ...then it would seem they are no longer true to that ideal. Point is, there are probably a ton of musical acts that 'deserve' a label like Nonesuch was originally... and we haven't heard of any of them. Who's to blame?

WTF, am I a B-lister? I got the wilcoworld email at 1240 am today. Not really enough notice for those of us who don't check email 40 times a day.
