  1. I would also add that while DeNiro and Pacino were ground breaking in a number of ways, some of the character sketch performances that made them have now been surpassed by others. Gandolfini, McShane, Kingsley, and others have all played scarier/more realistic gangsters..for example. And in some cases sustained those characters (to perfection) over several years of tv episodes.
  2. Bobby D smokes Al Paco for breakfast. Pacino hasn't done anything remotely inspired since Scent Of A Woman. He seems almost one-dimensinal...at least by comparison. DeNiro is still evolving, and you get the feeling he has a few more great performances still left to unveil.
  3. Blur and Oasis in top 20, but no Band or Velvets....sh'yea right.
  4. Not Rwanda, but there's a great trip report here on Angola. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269251 It runs for several pages.
  5. Don't want to shit in anyone's punch bowl, but isn't it "Don't Bring Me Down (varrooop)"?
  6. I just have to say, if anyone feels compelled to mention this to Nels, be forewarned - I will delete my account here, and will vigorously deny all knowledge of anything to do with VC!! You'll be the one that looks like an ass, not me. sincerely, El Sarchi, the mortified
  7. Hmmm, what about Golden Smog? I thought Another Fine Day was effing brilliant, pretty much from beginning to end. Then again, I think Blood On The Slacks sucked pretty bad, so I don't completely disagree with you.
  8. I think they call it compensating for something.
  9. I was listening to a radio thing yesterday that said the opposite...that the 1980 boycott hit the USSR really hard, stole "their moment", and took away much of their credibility as a superpower. Paved the way for Reagan to obliterate them and blah blah. They were saying that China is in a very similar position as the Soviets were then, looking for that international seal of approval and wanting us to turn a blind eye to the shitty things they're doing.
  10. Around $1.12 a liter. It's been higher than this...and I don't think I've seen gas below $0.95 in the last five years.
  11. That is good news....b-sides would be awesome. Vagabonds is really growing on me. I can't say it's my favorite style of music, but the songwriting is excellent, and the arrangements are very good too. Reminds me of Blue Rodeo in that way, I don't like all of their catalog, but they've made a lot of stuff I've enjoyed at various times over the years.
  12. --> insert Patchouli Oil joke here
  13. Oh yeah....absolutely. He was probably two credits shy of getting his Master's degree in English Lit., but ended up on academic suspension for dressing down a visiting lecturer who didn't know her shit. Now he curses under his breath at bitchy receptionists, and hits the pub every night after the last delivery. Listens to Tom Waits on his iPod with the volume at 10, and wears a 'Fcuk Off' t-shirt under his uniform.
  14. What if it were Civil War times? I think John and Jeff would be rebels who join an Apache Indian tribe to launch a counter-strike against the Yankees. Just to fuck things up. Glenn, Pat and Nels meant to rendez vous with them, but they stopped for the night, got really drunk around a campfire, and lost their horses. Damn. Mikael is a lawyer for the colonies, sitting in prison writing memoirs and waiting to be rescued. And I need a life.
  15. Here are my takes. Mikael looks like he has both feet firmly planted in academia, whether he's a professor, a writer, or a lifelong scholar (like my brother seems to be), I couldn't say. Whatever it is he's into, no one understands it, and there's way too much going on inside that head. He's the friend you sometimes wish you could drop a hit of acid in his drink, but you're pretty sure you wouldn't want to live with the outcome. John is an enigma. I could see him as a blue collar guy eating out of a lunchbox, or maybe a bartender at the Kelsey's roadhouse. But he could also be an ana
  16. Music From Big Mouse? Summer dentures? Sky Gray Sky? Manischevitzville? The possibilities are mind boggling.
  17. Nice pics. You guys should've made Jeff wear a name tag! lol
  18. For some reason, I feel like my privacy's been totally violated knowing that Jeff reads this. glad y'all had fun.
  19. Be sure and check this out. I'd also suggest some classic Raffi....especially over the Wiggles. They suck. Daniel Lanois mixed the first couple of Raffi albums, here in Hamilton.
  20. x2 We got Rockband for ps3 a few months ago, and my kids (and all their freinds) have gone totally nuts for it. If stems start to become readily available, hopefully the next version of Rockband might have a utility that would allow you to upload your own tracks to the program(??). Rockband is "ok" IMO, but seems really limited right now...maybe we just haven't progressed enough to unlock more than the first 15-20 songs. And I do cringe hearing my 10yo daughter sing Weezer (for the 900th time), or Black Sabbath.
  21. Check theraconteurs.com very retro website under Media, there's now a new video posted. (Salute Your Solution) It's pretty good...I think I'll look for the album now.
  22. I honestly don't know wtf that one's really about. Maybe just a bad dream. But when I listen to it thinking about the meaning of 'the dream', which is not something I go out of my way to do in this case, it usually makes me think of the Kurt and Courtney tragedy.
  23. Way cool and ambitious, I like it. My dream is to play, and maybe even sing, in a Wilco tribute band....someday. I'm a few years away from that goal. First step is get a decent guitar and start taking lessons again. Meanwhile, although I'm in the GTA, I definitely lack the skillz, the time, and probably the energy you need, but do offer my best wishes on your endeavour.
