  1. I can't believe Aman dug this thread out of the abyss. Nice! When you listen to Jeff talk about his songwriting process (like on the recent KMOX interview), you really have to figure any "patterns" are just pure dumb coincidence.
  2. That's about right for me too. Honorable mentions to Times-they-are-a-changin, John Wesley Harding, and Modern Times. I like Time Out Of Mind and Oh Mercy a lot also.
  3. Incidentally, if you see this at your bookstore...grab it. It's a great read.
  4. Thanks for the link. Jakob's new gig uses the Wilco lucky carpet trick, so I predict they'll be hugely successful, in an obscure unknown sort of way.
  5. Yep I read Chronicles when it came out. His description of the circumstances around this were odd. I mean, it was accross town, not around the world. He certainly could have gone back for it another day. Why he mentions it at all is the question. I think he may have felt too humbled by the undertaking of taking on Woody's "archives" while the man was still alive-- keep in mind Dylan was sleeping on friends' couches in those days. The other part was his description of Guthrie's kids, it seemed like this was his second family, and for whatever reasons, he needed to break free of those thin
  6. Coming back to the topic for a minute again, the Tweedy-Dylan connection via the Guthrie lyrics is pretty interesting. Unlikely enough that Dylan "passed" on looking at them, or whatever. And then for Jeff to get the opportunity some 35 years later, via Billy Bragg of all people. That is some pretty bizarre stuff. I can't help but feel that the way it happened is the way it was meant to be.
  7. Townes for one would never have picked up a guitar if it weren't for Dylan's first few records. He said so himself. I think Leonard Cohen falls into that camp as well. One of the great things Bob Dylan did was open the door for the legions of singers who posessed untrained, or just plain strange voices. Just food for thought.
  8. From Dylan?? Not a chance. He was always the sort of antithesis of whatever popular movement was happening, including the civil rights/folkies, the hippies, and Vietnam anti-war protestors. If it was hip and cool (as defined by mainstream media), Dylan was usually quick to distance himself from it.
  9. I would start right here. His first record of original material. And consider that he was barely 20 years old when he recorded it. I think it's good to go through the first 8 records chronologically.. tho you can skip the first one and the first GH.
  10. Uhh. Even if that were true (which it ain't), then Dylan's a .400 hitter with many thousands of at bats. He's the Ted Williams of songcraft. Whatever. I think Reservations is a better love song than She Belongs To Me. So blow me.
  11. It's not that far fetched a comparison. They're both rock musicians, both heavily influenced by English literature and poetry, good self editors, they both like to mix it up alternating between straightforward and very obscure imagery. I think Tweedy has written songs that rank up there with the creme de la creme...but Dylan has written more of them. And Dylan was extremely productive in his 20's, obviously. We're lucky to have them both.
  12. No one's HAPPY, we're just different shades of miserable. Liberals are guilty, because they're smart, rich, and they know deep down they don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves. Conservatives are the same, except they're self-righteous and indignant. Since they've been absolved of everything by Jesus, so all is cool. Hth. Also, see my sig. Liberals get free gift horses and find ever new and unexpected ways to fuck them up. Conservatives seize the day, and then fuck it up good.
  13. Just finished - Music from Big Pink: A Novella (33 1/3) by John Niven (thoroughly enjoyable and bittersweet) Next up - The Film Club by David Gilmour (err, not him...the other David Gilmour)
  14. That's a really lame ass excuse. So their customer base is shrinking due to competition, and the solution is to raise rates? WTF
  15. Agree it was good....not great. I don't think it will rank with PTA's very best work, but..what the hell do I know. But DDL was incredible, so was Paul Dano for that matter. And the score was great as well. Worthwhile to see.
  16. Wilco fan builds peace bridges between ancient Hezbollah factions. I'd kick your ninja ass! If this nice Wilco fan wasn't in my way. Breast groping ninjas stopped cold by Wilco t shirt. (Nat'l Enquirer headline)
  17. No need to apologize. Treasure/Mountain Bed is a helluva opener...I'd be royally pissed off too.
  18. Habs look like dead weights on the ice. No power play, no zip, no hustle.
  19. Tanglewood isn't an outdoor venue so much as it's an enormous estate....a few hundred perfectly manicured acres w/several impressive buildings, more like an elite prep school campus or something. And uber-rich society types strolling the lawns in haute couture 'n' sandals, sipping wine. A poor person wouldn't feel very welcome there. At least that was my impression spending a day there. I've only seen that kind of wealth and 'power' close up a few times in my life. I'll have to dig out some old pics...
  20. Funny, I saw a string quartet perform at this venue in the summer of '98. I agree that it's an odd choice...you wouldn't have seen this on the Being There tour. But times change. I would love to go to this show - it's not really my scene, but I think it will be a great atmosphere. Especially if the weather's good.
