  1. Mavis Staples in Cleveland, Mississippi. Nearby is Dockery Farms, where a young Pops Staples worked and learned to play guitar from Charley Patton. Been looking forward to this show for months!
  2. This album really puts me in a better frame of mind. It's calming. I've had a rough few days at work, and I needed to hear this tonight on the drive home. Taking the rest of the week off and driving up to the Mississippi Delta to attend her show on Thursday night. I guess it's because of her reassuring nature and faith, but for quite a long time I've just wanted to hug Mavis. Not in a stalky, creepy way - I'm not willing to be arrested for it. But I sure hope the opportunity presents itself. And if it doesn't it'll still be a heckuva show near Dockery Farms, where Pops worked during his youth.
  3. Lightnin' Malcolm & R.L. Boyce
  4. Just listened to the new album as well. Very nice, contemplative music for a Sunday afternoon in autumn. Barring some work-related curveball, it's pretty much a sure thing that I'll be attending next Monday's show in NOLA.
  5. jw harding, Thanks for the feedback. They're playing NOLA Monday night, and I'm on the fence because I have a pretty busy week next week. I've read a couple of positive reviews but haven't listened to anything from the new record except for "Biloxi" (which I liked). Guess I'll give it a listen one evening this week. And who am I kidding? I'll probably end up at the show on Monday night.
  6. Has anyone listened to the new album?
  7. Straight Outta Compton. I was generally familiar with their story, having grown up during the same years when they were active. I'm a fan of music biopics, so I really enjoyed it. Also saw Deepwater Horizon, which I also liked. Kurt Russell and John Malkovich were money, and the movie does a good job of telling the stories of the men and women who were on the rig the night of the blowout.
  8. I just received a refund from Kung Fu, so I guess it was a glitch. Bummer.
  9. Stay safe, folks in Florida and along the Atlantic Coast. Having endured several big hurricanes (including Katrina) over the years, I'm sending my thoughts & prayers your way.
  10. Hope this is real! Looks like my order went through. http://wilco.kungfustore.com/threads/caballeros/free-tee-wil829.html
  11. This may bode well for the South as a whole. Fingers crossed down here in NOLA.
  12. I saw him play at a little festival in NOLA last year. Met him briefly after the show and shared with him how much I enjoyed the set. He seemed genuinely appreciative. If "Biloxi" is indicative of the new album's sound, I think I'm gonna enjoy it.
  13. I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers, and the March up Freedom's Highway by Greg Kot.
  14. I wonder if there's any chance that they'll do a series of winter residency shows in Chicago. I'd make a trip for that. I've been trying to find a job in Chicago so I can move up there, so I'm looking for any excuse to visit.
  15. This year can't be over soon enough.
  16. Listening to the new one streaming now. Solid. I tend to lean toward Mike Cooley's offerings, so I'm partial to his songs on this one.
  17. Bumping this because I'm hoping to see Alejandro for the first time this week in NOLA. Any suggestions for his best album(s) to listen to and/or pick up?
