  1. Sturgill Simpson - saw him at the Thirsty Hippo, a very small bar in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in November of 2014. The Strokes - saw them at Hal & Mal's in Jackson, Mississippi in 2001 or early 2002. Shovels & Rope - saw them at Soul Kitchen in Mobile, Alabama in January of 2015. Counting Crows - saw them at Tipitina's in New Orleans in the spring of 1994.
  2. Congrats from this Braves fan to long-suffering Cubs fans, and to baseball, for an epic win in an epic game in an instant-classic World Series.
  3. Having just finished "I'll Take You There" today, I'm inclined to agree with your assessment. I didn't hate it, but it just didn't make me feel many of the feels.
  4. Just finishing my first listen. Like you said, another solid effort. I really like it and think I'll like it more with additional listens.
  5. Y'all did not steer me wrong. His live show was great! And I had a chance to chat with him for a minute or two after the show. Very cool guy and a big baseball fan. I'm sold. Alejandro's new record dropped yesterday. Has anyone listened to it yet? Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey (two of my favorite musicians) co-produced and co-wrote it with him, and It's received some pretty good reviews.
  6. My favorite Wilco album. I miss Jay Bennett.
  7. I'll also recommend Jake Xerxes Fussell for anyone who likes those artists. I've heard of him for years because I went to school in the same town in which he once lived. Really digging his self-titled album:
  8. Mavis Staples in Cleveland, Mississippi. Nearby is Dockery Farms, where a young Pops Staples worked and learned to play guitar from Charley Patton. Been looking forward to this show for months!
  9. This album really puts me in a better frame of mind. It's calming. I've had a rough few days at work, and I needed to hear this tonight on the drive home. Taking the rest of the week off and driving up to the Mississippi Delta to attend her show on Thursday night. I guess it's because of her reassuring nature and faith, but for quite a long time I've just wanted to hug Mavis. Not in a stalky, creepy way - I'm not willing to be arrested for it. But I sure hope the opportunity presents itself. And if it doesn't it'll still be a heckuva show near Dockery Farms, where Pops worked during his youth.
  10. Lightnin' Malcolm & R.L. Boyce
  11. Just listened to the new album as well. Very nice, contemplative music for a Sunday afternoon in autumn. Barring some work-related curveball, it's pretty much a sure thing that I'll be attending next Monday's show in NOLA.
  12. jw harding, Thanks for the feedback. They're playing NOLA Monday night, and I'm on the fence because I have a pretty busy week next week. I've read a couple of positive reviews but haven't listened to anything from the new record except for "Biloxi" (which I liked). Guess I'll give it a listen one evening this week. And who am I kidding? I'll probably end up at the show on Monday night.
