  1. And I'm crazy about Lindsey, so there you go. I go on vacation for 5 minutes, and look who's back! I've read all of the Tales of the City books about a gazillion times each. When I was a kid, it was a serial in the SF Chronicle, and I remember my mom and all my aunts reading it and being scandalized and loving every word of it. It's really a perfect time capsule of San Francisco in the 70s and 80s, they're sweet and sad and absolutely ridiculous. The new one isn't quite as fabulous, but it was still nice to spend a little more time with these people. And for anyone who's a fan and
  2. The kids were reading Magic Treehouse books on our vacation last week. I don't think I'd ever seen them before, but they looked pretty decent. We also spent a good part of the week reading the last half of this, aloud: And for my more adult-themed version of the Harry Potter series, over the course of the week I also managed to re-read all of these: More Tales of the City Further Tales of the City Babycakes Significant Others and Sure of You before diving into the latest in the series: The author claims that this is not the seventh book in the Tales series, but.
  3. There's always that moment of indecision: am I going to feel more stupid if I jump up and hunker down in the doorframe and this turns out to be nothing, or if I decide to just ride it out right here in my bed and the whole house collapses on me?

  5. I kind of like blackouts too, but again, that's based on a no-ill-effects scenario. A few years ago the power went out right before a big family party, the weekend before Christmas. At first it was kind of nice, the house was full of candles anyway and it was pretty cozy, but then my sister slipped on some candle wax that had dripped onto the stairs and twisted her ankle. And then my cousin and his wife, who are both hearing-impaired, showed up. They rely heavily on being able to see peoples' mouths when they're talking, and it was a nightmare for them. A friend of mine who was visiting

  7. This is definitely a topic that could fit in more than one forum. There's already been some minor discussion here.
  8. I was telling a friend, after the last strong-enough-to-wake-you-up earthquake up here, that I kind of like one like that. Not a significant amount of damage, no death or injury, just a reminder that we're really not in charge here. It is an incredible feeling.
  9. Happy birthday Fick! And kiss handsome Mr. Fick for me. And happy day to Mr. Saxon, too!
  10. Yeah, it sounds like it was written for a UK gossip mag. I didn't know that business about her sister and Clapton. Pretty sticky all the way around...
  11. How often do you get that many redheads in one semi-randomly-selected group?
  12. Autumn in New York - Billie Holiday Fairy Tale of New York - The Pogues w/ Kirstie MacColl I Wouldn't Live in New York City... - Buck Owens Good Old New York - Howard Fishman (written by Jelly Roll Morton)
  13. "Italian Night", my ass.
  14. Yes, I realize I'm getting obsessive about this, but this is a nice little article with some actual news in it, from USA Today of all places!
  15. No, according to everything on wilcoworld, it is "here". Scooped!
  16. :cheekkiss to you all, but Johnny's the closest to the truth, I think.
  17. Thank you, Mr. W. Head. The silliness of this thread is worth it if it brings Lotti back to us, even for just a moment...
  18. I'm still not as old as bjorn. Or Jeff Tweedy.
  19. That's it. I sent that PM to both of you, and you both need to let it go.
  20. isadorah, I'm assuming you've read Wicked? Great book...
  21. I agree, people don't have to look at threads if they aren't interested. Doesn't mean the responses have to escalate into greater and greater mean-spiritedness. Let's dial back the vitriol a bit.
  22. Seriously: Don't make me pull this car over...
