  1. how is Soundtrack of our Lives not massively popular? the sound on this is a bit dodgy, but bear with it. beautiful song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaXmaxzs3Ls
  2. the G series are a nice compromise, but are limited in the fact that you can't change lenses, and thus lose the flexibility of a DSLR. of course, your budget doesn't really include enough to consider extra lenses, but if that's of interest down the road you want to think about it.
  3. put me down for a 'yes' vote re: a Byron Coley reading.
  4. this is a pretty far-ranging topic, and i've got a bunch of unorganized thoughts about it. so i guess i'll just dive right in. 1 - the point about the municipality funding the organization is a good one. companies can go bankrupt and invoke layoffs or even full closures. this isn't quite the case w/ public sector, and i believe there's a legitimate concern about who is managing costs. the ever-burgeoning health care costs are now of even greater concern to a city or state budget...this was an obvious problem ~5 years ago and it's gotten worse. 2 - the basic idea of a union seems naff
  5. i was really hoping that a Loose Fur performance would happen. Looks like it's not to be.
  6. that lineup looks good. really good.
  7. they do list 'plus more' i would think that Helm is support to one night of Wilco, but there doesn't seem to be another band large enough to claim the other spot yet...so maybe SY will be added later?
  8. another thumbs up for Sublime Frequencies. Alan and Hisham do a great job. Add Mississippi Records to the list too.
  9. i only saw the Femmes once (sometime in college, maybe '87?) and it was a very good show. first time i'd ever seen a band line up straight across the stage w/ Victor in the middle.
  10. definitely. some of my favorites: Shadoks Sundazed Dust-to-Digital Legacy Revenant (while it lasted) even Drag City to a degree...they unearth some gems here and there.
  11. i was happy to see the 2nd to last show that Dio did w/ Heaven and Hell. rock on, Ronnie
  12. i dig that Husker cover but wouldn't rank it too highly in the 'incongruous' dept...HD was a pop band underneath the fury of their punk overcoat (they even tipped their hands early via the cover of "sunshine superman"), and they were also MN-based.
  13. i saw a bunch of these The Who w/ Entwistle '82 @ Shea Stadium, '89 in Foxboro Stadium (was it called Schaefer at that point?) Grateful Dead (Boston Garden) Phish at the Paradise, their first club date in Boston Firehose (at the Paradise) Janes Addiction (at the Orpheum) Monks of Doom (at Bunrattys) Pixies (Trompe Le Monde tour) @ the Orpheum
  14. i was gonna go to that too...Mike O'Malley was in town doing some filming for something, and we were gonna go to Toad's that night. he's good friends w/ my wife (college friends) and knows Bill J very well. Mike's work ran over and he called to tell me he wasn't gonna make it, so i ended up bailing as well.
  15. do you think there's been a change in quality? i firmly believe that every era has had great and terrible music. the downside to the rest of your post is that it could make seeing small bands who have day jobs play live, unless you live near where they live. not being able to see bands from New Zealand, England, Sweden, Japan (not to mention the West Coast), etc would be a pretty big void for me.
  16. unfortunately i haven't been on the downhill bike the last two summers, but here's a shot a few years ago of me @ Diablo. fun mountain!
  17. maybe you missed my edit, but i think it's only you (and possibly Froggie) having the communication breakdown...everyone else got the gist of the thread. Froggie, repent now! back on track...i wish i'd seen Sun Ra play. was gonna roadtrip to NYC for the free show the Arkestra played w/ Sonic Youth in the early 90s, but didn't. i also blew off at least one (and likely more) local shows, as i know he played Nightstage at some point. I have seen Marshall Allen play, but i think that's it of the original core members of the band.
  18. no need to get all defensive about it...but really, how could you have seen the Beatles? and judging from the three posts in the thread before yours, the intent of the question was, imo, pretty clearly understood by most.
