  4. Nice melody and 6/8 folky feel, generally i like the words but the title is cliche. I can't see where the current lineup will take it, though. His performance here is sparse and seems to fit the song perfectly. I hope that by putting it in a full band situation the over-the-topness doesn't take the magic out. An understated arrangement, something like "Someone Else's Song" would work. Anyway, it gives me hope that the new record will be better than the last.

  6. me likey. first indications suggest this might me an improvement on W(TA)
  7. see, I just picked up the discussion on page 14, so I missed that. I thought it was just a discussion about nothing. silly me, expecting a comparison of the mid-east and mid-west.
  8. is it wrong to love girls in the 9th grade?
  9. I love Luna, and miss them. The Feelies (whose drummer was the same as Luna's) had several great records and I can't recall a single lyric of theirs which was anything other than mundane. Which isn't to say that they were bad, just forgettable. So i guess that's not really on topic, but what the hell.
  10. Easy, folks. Blood isn't healthy to thirst for, especially if you want to put yourself on a higher moral plain than Gaddafi.
  11. There was a house fireat Grant Hart's and now there is a benefit show for him. It's March 12 at First Ave. in Minneapolis.
  12. I use the Ernie Ball .11s on all me electrics. At first bending wasn't the easiest, but now that i've got used to it, .09s or .10s feel like toys. I bend a lot. I used to use lighter guage and also used to break a string a gig on average. since switching to the heavier gauge I haven't broken a single one but still take a second guitar to the gig out of habit mostly. By the way today is NEW GEAR DAY! I caved in and bought a MIM Nashville Tele. It's at the shop now being restrung and set up for said .11s. Can't wait for tomorrow.
  13. it might be relevant but if you stick round these parts long enough, you will come to consider it tedious. which isn't to say that you will never actually engage in the discussion yourself.
  14. oops. I have some spelling pet peeves but I can't remember what they are right now. so much for trying to be contrarian.
  15. actually i think this gets closer to the heart of it. Nels does just fine when he's just being Nels. What would Jay have sounded like doing the solo for IG or SWTS?
  16. I never said I liked them. At least I don't think I did. Anyway, it's funny to see you defending Jay (who has been the target of your ire and jibes), when it is jay i actually prefer.
  17. That's because you're singing in the wrong octave, and because your voice lacks resonance. Which sheds no light on Nels' playing.
  18. one of the few quietly adventurous moments on WTA was the last thirty seconds or so, which is all Nels.
  19. I don't see it that way. He certainly doesn't play it safe live on things like "via chicago" or "Shot in the Arm." I think he just want to do the songs justice, but the catch is that the songs themselves are decreasingly adventurous on the records he's played on.
  20. regarding the role of producer: they say that the first time an actor watches one of his films, he doesn't watch the film but rather his own performance. Something similar is true recording with a band-though you in theory want what's best for the band, it's difficult to impossible to listen to it holisticly. That is where the producer comes in: someone whose ears the band can trust yet can listen with a bit of distance. regarding nels:good points by Laminated Nap and jff both, though LamNap you might be a bit harsh. One of the best parts of "you and I" for e.g. was Nels' part. If memory
  21. http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/01/31/jayhawks-video/ i figured all the talk in that article about a band reuniting and still having some sort of creative peak ahead of them was just the usual talk-it-up before the record came out. But from the very first seconds I must say i was sold on this. now i really can't wait.
