  1. Sold! I've been kind of in that between books place the past week, looking for something to follow "Enon," by Paul Harding. Your glowing review of this author has me running to the library post-haste!
  2. What -- no Josh? I save my swooning for roadies with cowbells!
  3. Finally got to see it tonight! Visually stunning, all I could've hoped for and more. So glad i got to see it on the big screen! Ralph Fiennes was terrific. All the movies that were previewed before it looked absolutely wretched, to me, so that made the opening segment all the more delightful (funicular! Such a weird word). I loved the little touch of everything being labeled : the aforementioned funicular, the Lobby Boy, steam vent, etc. Very whimsical.
  4. I was so amused by all the accusations of Wilco being a hipster band. I bet 4 out of 5 of hipsters surveyed would agree that Wilco is anything but!
  5. I'm curious about the name of the festival -- is it a reference to a GD song or something? Or short for "lock and load?"
  6. I love the part where they're talking about New York (New Jork) and Fred sings "I've got a reservation." So, so funny!
  7. I hope you ended up getting tickets. The universe should always be in favor of people getting to see Jeff Tweedy!
  8. Well, Beck definitely has the atmospheric melancholia down pat. Like others here, I think it sounds like Sea Change 2.0, only not as good. Around track 4, i got bored and turned it off so didn't give the entire disc a listen.
  9. Mmmmmm... Chili half-smokes. Hurts so good.
  10. The DC show is such good news! Have been waiting and waiting for a solo show to be somewhere close.
  11. When they play here in June, the opener is Water Liars, who I've never heard of. Would have liked to see Blitzen Trapper, though.
  12. Sounds like you enjoyed DBT more the second time around!
  13. Visit to my favorite local nursery to get some plants, potting said plants, lunch in the treehouse with my daughter, heading to dinner at Mother-in-law's for traditional St. Patrick's day fare. A nice family day.
  14. I think it's really cool how so many of the shows we've attended over the years were also attended by other, as-yet-unknown VCers. For example, Mr.Heartbreak, me, and other Florida VCers were all at the Gainesville show in '03. Conversation with Wilco Me revealed we'd both been at the Gillian Welch/Bright Eyes show in Atlanta in '07. Just think it's neat that this message board has brought together folks who had been in the same place at the same time, but who otherwise never would have met. Cue "It's a Small World After All" here!
  15. This thread makes me realize I'm not really a "big show" kind of person (except for Solid Sounds!). But the small shows that I've loved in recent years include Lucinda Williams at HoB (New Orleans 1999), Old 97s in St. Pete (2002?), Wilco in Gainesville (2003), The Hold Steady at the Cow Haus in Tallahassee (2005), Gillian Welch at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta (2007), and Drive By Truckers in Jacksonville a few years back.
  16. I think that would have been more effective, too, and more in keeping with the mood of the series. The end was a little more tidy and warm/fuzzy than I expected. Having said that, I was glad they both survived the final ordeal.
  17. Nice. Thoughtful summary of a great tv show.
  18. It looked to me like in the show-down with lawnmower guy, Marty got an axe in the chest. Then he stayed conscious while waiting for help and didn't appear to have major torso bandages in the hospital. Wonder what gives with that?
  19. Pretty sure he saw ritualistic rape of a young girl, which was way too close to home due to the age of his daughters. I was a little surprised they brought it back full circle to one of the very first people they questioned (lawn mower dude). After all the preceding twists and turns, that almost seemed too conventional. Very eager to see how it comes to a close tomorrow night!
  20. Yes, awful. Cause it's all about me. Looking out for number 1 here.
  21. That was awesome. They're coming to NE Fla in early June -- gonna be a great show! The bass player seems to be channeling Johnny Ramone. Works for me!
  22. The oracle at Delphi is cool, a short bus ride from Athens. I was in Greece in September 1998. We spent time on Naxos, it was quieter than Mykonos and Santorini. Wo knows now, that was so long ago!
  23. It's going to be a seriously ecstatic reunion (band + fans) when they do start coming around again. Will be so exciting, but hopefully it won't mean tix will be even harder to come by and Solid Sound will be crazy crowded, expensive, etc. Trying to stay positive! And of course, wishing only the best for Sue and the family.
  24. Iron & Wine. But I'm bummed because he had been touring with a horn section and back-up singers, and all of the sudden it's a solo show. I like his songs and all, but I was looking forward to the energy of a full band. Now I just have to stay awake!
  25. How funny, I was just now reading the Wikipedia entry about the series and realized each season will have a different story, characters, etc. I agree with you, IRDB, this show is the greatest. Have watched 5 episodes and each one gets better, stranger, more intense. No real need to compare, but the last show i truly loved (Breaking Bad) had a slight edge, for me, by adding dark comedy to the mix. But what an amazingly great show!
