That was the third time I've seen Wilco at Merriweather, and for my money, the best time! Even in spite of a shorter set (and in spite of the fact that Muzzle of Bees continues to elude me). Someone above described the second half as "blistering," and this is a perfect description. They were just on fire. I had the fun of having a first-timer with me, and she was totally blown away. Always great to witness someone experiencing the magic for the first time. I've never been to a show where they closed with The Lonely 1, and I was amazed at how utterly rapt the audience became. Autumn Defense Appreciation Thread
smells like flowers replied to smells like flowers's topic in Just A Fan
Yeah, they are super soft rock and other than the Circles release, I don't listen to them... but I just love seeing them live! I would never compare them to Wilco, just appreciating them for their own thing. And maybe because I'm a little bit sweet on John.... -

Dylan, Wilco, My Morning Jacket summer tour
smells like flowers replied to Shug's topic in Just A Fan
Forgive my naivete, but is that a thing that typically happens? The venue drops the price to fill empty seats? I'm always in such a rush to get good seats through pre-sale (for Wilco, anyway) that I never considered that tickets would get cheaper as the event got closer. Maybe that will work in my favor for the show at Merriweather Post Pavilion. One can only hope! -
I did a quick search and unless I missed it, this thread doesn't exist yet! Broke out the "Circles" album and listening now for the first time in several years. After seeing them so recently at SSF, the songs resonate for me even more. And I didn't remember how lush the production is -- horns, all kinds of keyboard effects, and I think I just heard a loon call! Actually, seeing them at all three Solid Sounds has been a high point of the festival for me each year. The first year, when they played in Hunter Auditorium, I thought they sounded rich and gorgeous (I remember a reviewer called

Breaking down the Wilco AmericanaramA set lists
smells like flowers replied to sonnyfeeling's topic in After The Show
Great to read your synopsis of the setlists thus far! I started feeling a little regretful about missing out, but checked airfare today and even though there are plenty of tickets (even GA floor seats!) for the venue I was looking at, airfare is crazy expensive and I can't swing it. Boo hoo hoo.- 30 replies

Too bad. Pieholden Suite would have fit beautifully into the Summerteeth-heavy set they played on Saturday. The little marketing flourishes that were tossed in at the 11th hour (chocolate bar golden tickets and "Dinner w/Wilco") were fun ideas but it seems like they both fell a little flat. I felt bad for the girl on stage (Gillian) -- we all know Jeff's reputation for social awkwardness, and he totally personified it during that segment. I wasn't at the Saturday night dinner, and while most have said it was fun, it wasn't exactly what it was billed as. Folks who attended reported that s

I bought that one, too -- the setlist is so good. Sound is great, fun audience banter, too. It's possible I'm a bit biased, because I was at that show. But it's my favorite recent live performance to listen to.

I once asked my husband's friend, who is a drummer, about the drummer face. He fixed me with a glare that clearly said he had no sense of humor about his drummer face. Nice to see that someone does!

AmericanaramA Concert 2 - Tampa, FL 6/27/13

Gaaahhh!!! Insert emoticon of tortured smiley face ripping hair out! I KNEW they would play Muzzle. I just knew it. Because they're right here in Florida, and it's my birthday, and I DIDN'T GO! Some bullshit reason like not caring about MMJ and Dylan and I'm broke and I just went to Solid Sound. That will teach me! Okay, I feel better now. Just because I've requested Muzzle of Bees at every show for the past two years doesn't mean I won't eventually get to hear it live. -
This is a great post. When I read the setlist, I thought "Meh. Only two songs we didn't just hear at Solid Sound." That's because I'm a whiny, entitled, fair-weather Wilco fan. But you, Diane, you have the uncanny ability to see beyond the setlist, to look at the progression of songs and imagine the flow of the show. You also managed to imagine it through the eyes of a someone who's not yet a fan, and picture them being blown away. All this in spite of seeing Wilco and JT like 22 million times. It's so amazing -- can you bottle it and sell me some?

Jeff and Pat did sorta look like they were just going through the motions in that section of the song Saturday night. Just hope Josh doesn't let go of the cowbell routine during Hoodoo Voodoo (or the occasional Don't Fear the Reaper) -- that will never get old for me!

She's on NPR's Talk of the Nation right now. She said some funny things about working with Jeff! Even impersonated his nasal voice. Bold!

Amazing photos as always!

How in the world? When you've been to two already, even if you know it's going to be different, how is it possible to have no expectations? It's really hard not to compare the years, although it has been different every year. My highlights this year were seeing/meeting members of Wilco in the crowd, seeing old Wilco friends and meeting new ones, and of course the music! Loved the Autumn Defense set, thought Foxygen had the true rock'n'roll spirit, saw Neko Case and YLT for the first time, and all the amazing stuff Wilco had to offer. Plus the added bonus of a motel right next to a shuttle

No, but a ton of songs from Friday night were posted by someone called "Geoff Tweaty."

I know all the craft beer fans were happy with beer choices, but lightweights like me who like to keep the party going need a choice under nearly 5% alcohol -- bring on the Bud Light!
-
Nearly all of Friday night's covers have shown up on youtube.... except "Surrender." Anyone get it? Please post!

So many great songs on night #2! Can't help wishing, though, that they'd have jettisoned the Big Hits (IG, HMD, Shot in the Arm, etc.) and made room for just a couple off Ghost or a couple more off Yankee. I know, I know. Not complaining. Just saying.

I'm with you, Diane! We are in anticipatory frenzy. I like to drag this part out til it hurts.... I feel like I'll blink my eyes and it will all be over.

Does anyone who is familiar with North Adams know how far from Mass MOCA the Appalachian Trail is? I googled it and it shows it at MA 2 and Phelps Road, but I couldn't tell whether this is in town or further out.
