  1. U2. As much as I loved them in high school (second only to REM), their music really hasn't kept its magic for me. Also Violent Femmes. Couldn't get enough in 9th or10th grade but now it's just irritating.
  2. Watched for maybe the third time since its 1999 release: During the first 15-20 minutes I was thinking it had aged and hadn't retained its impact. The dad/teenage friend flirtation skeeved me out a bit more than the last time I watched it (maybe because of having a daughter now). But by the end of the film my mouth was hanging open and I was as blown away, if not more, than I was when I first saw it. When the credits rolled and I saw the it was written by Alan Ball, I was like, "NO WONDER!!" He's the guy that created and wrote "Six Feet Under," which is one of my all-time faves. Grea
  3. Just finished this, which was good but not great: I definitely have a thing for chef memoirs and this one was inspiring in terms of the truly hard work that went into the making of Samuelsson's career. (Personal faves in this genre, though, are Bill Buford's "Heat" and "Blood, Bones & Butter, " by Gabrielle Hamilton.) Now I have to go back and finish that John Irving book I started last month. ("Until I Find You.") It's the first novel I've read where a penis is pretty much a character in the story.
  4. It's been many moons since I was there, but a quick internet search showed that Louisiana Music Factory on Decatur St (think that's what you were thinking of, Louie) and Magic Bus Records on Toulouse are still in business. Both are in the French Quarter. ** There used to be a VC'er whose username was Via New Orleans -- if s/he's still around, they should give you the lowdown!
  5. What, no Fantasy Island? (actually, I loved that show back when it was on TV and I was about 10 years old. I watched the pilot episode of it on youtube a few years back and was appalled at how bad it was! Aaron Spelling ruled 70's TV, though.)
  6. My best and favorite shows: Six Feet Under My So-Called Life Arrested Development I tried The Wire once (watched only the pilot) and was disappointed that it didn't grab me. I've heard it called the best TV show ever and so it's on my list to try it again sometime.
  7. I have three but they require the mythical UT reunion: Give Back the Key to My Heart* New Madrid The Long Cut *The resurrection of Doug Sahm would also be great.
  8. Probably not any weirder than being the self-appointed heavy on a Wilco fan message board.
  9. This thread has been very interesting to follow. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool liberal so obviously I will support President Obama. The extent to which I follow the nitty-gritty details of politics is limited, but as far as broad brush-strokes, I find myself in agreement with most of what PBO says. But I'm posting because I'm so discouraged about the degree to which the candidates admit their possible victories are predicated on fundraising. I got the umpteenth email from the Obama campaign this morning, pleading for money because their campaign chest is now about the same as Romney's and just p
  10. Candyfloss was definitely a grower for me. I kept seeing the song title pop up in people's Favorite Wilco Songs lists and didn't even recognize it (my copy of Summerteeth has it as a bonus track but doesn't list the title). Once it took hold, it was infectious! My daughter (4 or 5 at the time) fell in love with it too and always requested it for our drive to school. Finally got to hear/see it played live this summer and that was the icing on the cake! p.s. Something tells me Jeff might not actually smell like flowers, though...
  11. In the Roadcase download for Red Rocks Night #2 (and probably in tons of other places), that line in Passenger Side is very clearly "had a scene" -- you can hear Jeff playing with the line and he purposefully stutters a little and elongates the word scene. A lightbulb moment for me, anyway!
  12. I kind of like the misheard lyrics and ambiguity. I'm tempted now to look at the lyrics to I'm Always in Love but I will resist! To me, it's always been "it's a drag-ass snag" and it always will be (whatever the F that is)!
  13. IMO, it would have been a way better choice than "Can't Stand It!" But not sure if it would have put Wilco on the charts, either.
  14. Speaking of K-Tel, how many thousands of these must they have sold?!
  15. I'm with you! I've listened to that song so many times and loved it without knowing hardly any of the words!
  16. Finally got around to watching this whole hour of juiced-up Wilco-ness. There's no way I'll be able to go to sleep tonight! Part of me can't wrap my head around the contrast between that Jeff and the dressed up professionalism he personifies onstage now. I guess we all have to grow up. But I'm so glad we get to go back and roll around in that hot mess, courtesy of youtube! You lucky people that were actually there, it must be burned on your brains! Damn.
  17. Okay, that first album thread is fun so let's do this one: What was the first rock concert you ever saw? I'll start: Duran Duran, Philadephia Spectrum, 1984 As a souvenir I bought some of those guitar pins that were popular back then. I didn't have a jeans jacket so I put them on my yellow windbreaker.
  18. From an early age, I've relied on the kindness of others to help build my music collection (doesn't hurt that my best friend and also my husband buy tons of music which I get to benefit from). But here's the first album I got as a present: A couple years later I got my first real album for Christmas:
  19. Congratulations on your winning photo, Andrew!
  20. Have to admit I never really "got" this song until seeing this version. The full irony sarcasm of the "boo hoo hoo" hit me and changed everything!
  21. A perfect of illustration of "less is more."
