Whats your take on Impossible Germany?
smells like flowers replied to roadhse ma's topic in Just A Fan
Of all the times I've heard this one at a show, I only really got into it once... and at that show I had partaken of an illegal substance. Otherwise, it's definitely my pee break song, too. I got totally smeared on here for saying it when I first joined the forum, but the guitar solos are too close to smooth jazz for my ears. -
Thanks for posting that, Diane! I'd only heard it once before and although it's too short, it's a nice piece. I know I've said it before on here, but I wish Terry Gross would interview JT again, a nice and satisfyingly long full interview. I even went so far last year as to request it on the Fresh Air website, to no avail...

Weird/obscure/strange covers you would like to see Wilco perform?
smells like flowers replied to auburn's topic in Just A Fan
Plus one on that one. I'm really not a Steely Dan fan but that song cast quite a spell on me when it came out. -
So what's good about January?

Three words: GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!!! -
It's always fun to know there are other Wilcophiles running around out there with song snippets in their heads and making connections between the regular world and Wilco world!

He's playing a solo acoustic show here on Wednesday night. From all the love he's gotten recently on this board, it's not to be missed, right? My only hesitation is that the tracks on his last record that I listened to are all full of horns and strings and such, and have such a rich sound. With just him and his guitar, it might be on the very mellow side. Your thoughts, VCers?

Okay, maybe the vest didn't make him a standout, but the picture of Pat after all the hairy sweaty bearded tattooed rock'n'roll beasts looked so clean-cut and school boyish! It was such a stark contrast. Even the always-scruffy Jeff looked squeaky clean in the context of the other photos.

How was "AWOL?" I'm on a bit of a hiking-memoir tear right now, reading "Walking North" by Mic Lowther. The writing isn't great but it's an interesting read anyway. Next I'm on to "Appalachian Trials." I think 2013 may hold a little backpacking for me.

Amazing slideshow! I was struck however, by noting that in that steaming cauldron of hair, tattoos, beards, and guitars, only one rocker was wearing a vest.

Wilco heard while you're out and about
smells like flowers replied to isadorah's topic in Just A Fan
Having a couple beers in the warm Florida sunshine this afternoon and heard THREE Wilco songs at the bar! Born Alone Hesitating Beauty Handshake Drugs Turns out the music was off someone's IPod -- clearly a fellow Wilco devotee! -
Really loving this one this right now! It was released on Verve in 1961 -- a piano jazz Christmas feast for the ears.

Oh, I so wish I could go. Logistics are tricky (daughter in grade school, husband who commutes to work and gone for 11 hours). I haven't been to Jazzfest since 1999 but it's the BEST time. (Okay, Solid Sound is the BEST time, but who needs to rank 'em?) Something to plan and scheme about during these winter months! Kermit Ruffins and crawfish pie -- yum...

Thanks again, Diane, for planning early and booking rooms at the Willows! Someone else on here is going to be very happy, too, to get your last room. Stayed at the Bennington Motor Inn the first Solid Sound and rooms were only $100/night. The place was pretty basic and the rooms were small but if anyone still needs a spot give it a try. There was a great place to eat breakfast right up the street and it takes about 35 mins to get to North Adams, if memory serves.

It seems like they made lots more early discount tix available this time around. I can remember trying for the $99 ones for Solid Sound 2011 and they were gone by 10:03 or something crazy. Happy to say I got mine this morning! Six months, three weeks and counting!

Your baby will be 5 or 6 months old and might sleep through most of the rock and roll! You can strap the little bundle in a Snugli and rock out to your heart's content, chances are! They're still very portable and flexible to routine at that age (in my limited experience, having had just the one). Ask your friends with kids... it's way easier to drag a six-month old around than a toddler or older kid. ** When I saw the Mass MOCA photo posted on the Wilcoworld site yesterday, it made my heart race a little! Never would have guessed that the big news about tickets going on sale would brea

Wilco - St. Augustine Ampitheatre 5/16/12
smells like flowers replied to Mr. Heartbreak's topic in After The Show
Not sure where else to post this, so here seemed the likely place. Just got back from celebrating my little girl's 8th birthday -- she wanted an ice skating party. Yes, we have that in Florida! We're just not too good at it. Anyway, every year they set up an ice rink basically on the stage of the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. As we walked into the venue, it hit me --- the last time I was there was for Wilco back in May! So we wobbled and slid around in the very spots where Jeff et al stood a mere six months ago. Skating was fun and all, but if there was a time machine I'd have jumped bac -
We picked up that Jimmy Smith Christmas LP at the flea market a couple years ago and I couldn't believe my ears -- I love it so much! Ella's hard to beat, too. My guilty pleasure at Christmas is the Carpenters....

I got sucked right into this memoir of a young woman's journey on the Pacific Crest Trail -- not only is it a riveting read, there is an Uncle Tupelo reference AND a Wilco reference!

Just finished "Nightwoods" by him. Did you read that one? I kept putting it down because I didn't want it to end. Will definitely be reading "Thirteen Moons" soon. Just started this one -- so far it is great:

The Thanksgiving Thread: Give Thanks Here!
smells like flowers replied to gogo's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Congrats on the impending arrival, choo-choo! Tonight I'm grateful for the chianti that has me feeling warm and fuzzy, for the fact that my almost 8-year-old daughter loves vintage Bugs Bunny cartoons as much as I do (Leopold!), and for the fact that I have the next five days off to cook, eat, and maybe listen to this summer's Charlottesville show on sooutoftune.org! Happy Thanksgiving to all of y'all. -
Wilco heard while you're out and about

"You and I" at the grocery store. Probably in my top five list of least-loved Wilco songs, but still a thrill to hear Jeff's voice over the speakers in Publix. -
Another one from my youth bites the dust
smells like flowers replied to remphish1's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Agreed 100%. Butterscotch Krimpets are where it's at! -
Yeah, I started that one twice, got about 1/3 of the way through, and both times, abandoned ship. I love the idea of Moby Dick but it's not an easy one to get through! I settled for re-reading The Old Man and the Sea.

About to start this one. I really loved Cold Mountain so I'm hopeful that this will be an equally enchanting read.
