Bush always doing what's right
quarter23cd replied to tongue-tied lightning's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
No, but the first politician to suggest a program like this will win in an landslide! Nodoby likes seeing their tax dollars being spent on things they disapprove of. The left doesn't like seeing all the money going to defense contractors and faith-based initiatives...and the right gets wigged out by stem cells and the NEA. There is nothing new under the sun. The (oversimplified) answer many people have to this is that the government should have a reduced role in distributing money and if you want money put towards something, donate it yourself. This has a nice DIY ring to it on the sur -
Good to hear MT is still around. I wasn't sure if they'd last after moving further away from campus. Where is Ace in the hole? There are absolutely zero record stores, period, where I currently live in CT. We've got a Borders down the road a bit and one of those crappy "we only sell top-40" stores in the mall, but no actual real record stores that I'm aware of.

Rocker-turned-preacher pursuing pop fame again

Its hard to imagine how that band didn't become huge with a name that rolls off the tongue so easily... -
I thought it did. Didn't they "re-unite" for the last couple albums? But what do I know? Even their best albums were just "kinda okay" in my book.

I tend to agree with this guy, actually. Maybe his states project will have more appeal when he tackles the really "tough" issues like statehood for DC and Puerto Rico. Only 48 more albums to go until we get to those gems, baby!!

Indeed. If ever there was a guy begging to be cast in a movie as an undead zombie-pirate type thing, Keef would be it. (not that I know that's the part he is playing, but its just a hunch...)

Don't forget the hackey-sack.

Having my first listen right now. My initial opinion is that this is the first Wilco "jam" song that really works for me. I can't wait to hear the krautrock version of this on the album!

Well, its true that some of the most moving art is born out of desperation. Frequently that's what people are drawn to--the unique specticle of an individual opening himself up when he is at his most vulnerable and desperate. Is that healthy? Probably not, but it doesn't make it untrue. Hoping somebody remains unhealthy, tho, because you want to hear a certain type of art created by them--ummm, that's kind of disturbing. Having suffered w/ a panic disorder msyelf, I applaud Jeff if he is indeed as healthy as he seems to be these days. Keep it up, bro!

As a bandwagon-Mets fan this year, I have to agree that a sweep would be tough to swallow. Seriously, don't make me hitch my wagon to another team! note: Kudos to the O's for taking both games of the double-header with Philly yesterday, but y'all still suck and Angelos ain't dead yet, so I'm still boycotting.

Meh. Interleague play is cool, but I guess its lost some of its initial appeal. I'll admit that something about it makes them feel vaguely like exhibition games, but maybe that's just because they're still an oddity--you get a couple of those series a year, but its not the norm. But, hey, I still like it. I mean, take it away and whaddya got? "Hey, look, two more series with the Royals and Devil Rays!"

I dunno, but I'm still waiting to see a correspondingly-positive result in Baltimore.

Yeah, but Atlanta fans might be a little bit spoiled after about a decade and a half of great teams. I'm an Orioles fan, and this is the first year I didn't even bother getting my hopes up at the beginning of the season. I've finally conceded that there's no chance of improvement--ever--until Angelos is long gone. How bad is it? Well, I've been living in the NY area for about 5 years now and I find myself slowly, inexplicably becoming a Mets fan. The friggin' Mets! That's what you've brought me to, Angelos, you sonofa#$%#@$!!!!

Judging by the jokes that fly around my officeplace on a daily basis, I'd say that half the people I work with must be "from Venezuela". Who knew? I always thought they were just immature...

You beat me to it. It would be a brilliant PR move to have someone else act as a lightning rod for all the attention...

Tell me about it. Props to Reyes on his cycle, tho. I was at the game and have to say it was an amazing phenomenon to have that whole stadium rockin' and then feel the energy level of the place plummet so quickly. Just about every person out of that place kept mumbling "Billy...Fucking...Wagner..." over and over on the way to their cars.

I got free tickets to the Mets/Reds game tonight. I'm a Baltimore fan stuck in Yankee/BoSox land, but hey, baseball is baseball and I haven't been to a major league game in a couple years.

Its a huge book and a lot to swallow all at once, but I think the way he has broken it up--in a series of like 70 profiles that read like articles--makes it easier to take. So far I'm burning through it in linear fashion, but you could just as easily "hop around" because its arranged somewhat like a reference book. The more I learn about jazz, the more I learn that I've got a lot to learn. Great book!

Russell Banks is one of my favorites. When you finish Bone, by all means pick up Continental Drift.

Who release first single in ages

...maybe it will sound better in execution than it does on paper. -
700 pages and a century of music is a lot to chew on, but I'm really digging this.
