  1. Yeah, that was always the reason given for the lack of pro sports in the past. Its such a college-sports town they weren't sure pro sports could compete, but I'd say the BJs and the Crew have done nicely.
  2. Well, technically George W has a nice view of Maryland from his house. If you could divert the Potomac a mile or two south, he'd be a northerner. Uhh...not that I want anything to do with conversation, at all.
  3. I rarely make it all the way through it, either, and yet it is still my favorite song of theirs.
  4. How is hockey doing in Cbus these days? I was there for the inaugural season and it was fun going to games in an environment where people were just happy to finally have a major pro team to cheer for. Has that trailed off or do they still draw a good crowd?
  5. Hold your horses there, pal. Check out the preseason record: 4-3-0. By my calculations that's above .500. I call that progress. Besides, my other favorite team is the Capitals and I'm none too enthusiastic about them, either. Good cod, why can't it just be college football season all year?
  6. True, I saw that it was debunked, tho there is certainly enough suspicion going around pretty much everybody's clubhouse these days. (and poor Tejada, if he is indeed clean--that guy's name keeps coming up over and over again)
  7. I still believe. Won't be easy, but it could happen. This is the first time in about a decade that I've decided that I have an actual rooting interest in the playoffs.(rather than merely rooting against the Yankees, which I will also be doing again this year) Side note: I just came to the shocking realization that a decade has passed since the Jeffrey Maier incident, and I'm still waiting for my boys to recover their momentum. Hello? Anyone hear me down there in Baltimore? Or are you all too busy "allegedly" taking steroids? Second side note: Geez, if this is how the O's play whi
  8. Enjoy. Tonight should be a great night to be in that big blue concrete bowl! And don't concede anything to the Yankees yet. Or ever. They may be hot right now, but the playoffs just started and stranger things have happened. Always remember that there are few things in life more enjoyable than a Yankees postseason collapse.
  9. As enjoyable as the schadenfreude is, I think the best thing Dems can possibly do right now is simply stand back and watch the GOP squirm while they try to explain this one away without cannibalizing themselves. Seriously. I'm really not interested in seeing all the hysterics, real or feigned. Making this a political issue on the left comes across as just being revenge for the utter stupidity of the whole Lewinsky saga--not to mention giving the right a convenient way to change the subject. You could argue the whole "what goes around comes around" logic, but I think it is better to let
  10. Dear Frank Robinson: You're a class act and it was tough to watch your emotional last game with the Nat's yesterday. You deserve better than you've been treated recently. If you are thinking about your future and wondering what more you can do for the greater good of the baseball world, may I recommend that you start by coming home to Baltimore (and tossing Angelos out a window). Thank you. Sincerely, q23cd
  11. This looks about right, although I might mix up the order a bit. But since I'm feeling lazy, I won't.
  12. Evidently. They're 3rd in the Big Ten right now in passing yards, 9th in rushing. Interesting.
  13. When they announced on the news that Pedro was out for good, my wife immediately looked at me and said "You cursed them, didn't you?" My favorite team was been crappy for about a decade now, so I jumped on the Mets bandwagon earlier this year. Sorry, I didn't know the curse would follow me, I swear! Then again, Pedro hasn't been himself for a while, so maybe it will be one less distraction to know for sure that he's out rather than wondering.
  14. True. I thought it was kind of interesting, looking at recent Wilco/Tweedy shows, that they chose to play the Wex as opposed to, say, the Newport across the street. Maybe the Wex has better acoustics. Maybe he doesn't like the fact that the Newport always smells like piss.
  15. Gosh, there are a bunch I could name, but I'll toss out a few to start with that I have found myself coming back to over and over again: "Moby-Dick" - Melville "Cannery Row" and/or "East of Eden" - Steinbeck "Continental Drift" - Russell Banks
  16. No opinion on the Wright/Cabrera thing--I'd love to have either of thsoe guys playing for my favortie team. I'm not sure what to expect from the Mets in the postseason. Pitching, obviously, is a question mark but I think this team has the ability to win anyway. I've been following the Mets all season (since my favorite team was eliminated in late April or so) and they've been a fun team to watch and I am thoroughly on the bandwagon. But they've also been on cruise-control since the All-Star break, while sitting on a double-digit lead in their division all summer. I'm curious to see if th

  18. Wow, that's amazing. I mean, I suppose (taking a very detached point of view here) that its true that he was in the business of documenting how animals act in the wild--and part of that job is that he frequently showed them defending themselves against each other, sometimes brutally and lethally. So, following that logic, this was simply an instance of an animal defending itself against a perceived threat and thereby was a very natural thing. Still (kudos to Steve for his altruism if that is really how he thought of it) I dunno that it makes it necessarily ok to show, because I can't think
  19. "Awww shit, who got a website?" This is awesome.
  20. Awesome pics. Kinda makes me wish I was back in town. Musically, I can't remember there ever being anything this cool at the Wexner Center when I was in school there. Nice.
  21. Yup. Its all about field position and waiting for the other guys to get desperate and make a mistake. It ain't always pretty, but dangit, it sure does seem to work. Somewhere Woody Hayes is nodding approvingly (tho he still thinks they throw the ball too much).
  22. How old are the kids? Just asking cuz when you mentioned Dan Zanes it reminded me of the time he made an appearance at the childcare center my wife runs (and my kids go to). There were roughly 100 kids ranging in age from about 8 weeks to kidnergarten, and it was just him and his acoustic guitar playing gentle old folk songs.(you can see the end coming a mile away, can't you?) Ahh, but the power of his funny hair is strong, and it kept the kids mesmerized for the first couple songs...but you could quickly sense the natives getting restless. My daughter (who was probably 2 at the time) las
  23. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The upside of Tresselball is that OSU will have a chance to win every game they're in. The downside of Tresellball is that OSU will have a chance to lose every game they're in. I know the weather conditions were lousy, but once Troy threw that early INT on a long ball, OSU packed it in and got waaaaay more conservative on offense than this team has any business being. It happens at least a couple times every year that I start screaming "FIRE TRESSEL!!!" at the tv at the top of my lungs because he refuses to actually use his offensive weapons. B
