  1. I don't know if they are the top albums but six that I expect I will continue to listen to are: Bon Iver - Bon Iver Buffalo Tom - Skins Feelies - Here Before Low Anthem - Smart Flesh Real Estate - Days Wilco - The Whole Love
  2. There was an article about Dominic West in the NY Times the other day: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/arts/television/dominic-west-in-appropriate-adult-on-sundance-channel.html
  3. Started reading this the other day before I knew there was a new movie version of it coming out.
  4. Looks like he might be changing his mind. According to one report "Ramirez is said to be "distraught" over the prospect of changing positions." http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/marlins/2014239.html
  5. That's interesting. I had dinner last night with my bro-in-law and he was telling me about going to see the Allmans earlier this week (Wednesday night, I think). He is only a casual fan but he said the show was amazing. He said that Derek Trucks was the best lead guitarist he has ever seen (and he's seen Clapton, Garcia, among others). He said that Gregg was a secondary or tertiary player in the show but that Trucks was mind-blowingly good.
  6. Don't get too excited: you don't get money - you get credit towards future ticketmaster purchases. "If the Settlement is approved by the Court and you have not opted out of the Class, you will automatically receive Ticketmaster Credits. You will receive, via email, at the address associated with your Ticketmaster account, discount codes (“Codes”) which can be used for future purchases for U.S. events from Ticketmaster’s website." http://www.ticketfeelitigation.com/
  7. That's interesting. I have been a This American Life fan for years and never realized that. There is obviously some overlap because TAL includes the Planet Money people on shows (and I think Planet Money is an NPR show).
  8. Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore Yest to Confirm Who Will Take Custody of J Mascis http://spinalbap.blogspot.com/2011/10/kim-gordon-and-thurston-moore-yet-to.html?spref=tw
  9. It was very good. I will admit that I have not followed her music as closely since Come broke up but her set had her trademark intensity.
  10. Wow - Tinnitus, nice shots (as always)! I went back for the third night, which was solid. There were fewer guests (and no J Mascis) but it was a fun night of rock.
  11. From Richard Thompson's website: Rolling Stone slips to number 69 in Thompson poll 11/27/2011 (updated 11/28/2011) Rolling Stone, the popular music and related arts and culture magazine, dropped 50 places in Richard Thompson's annual assessment of periodical publications. When asked to comment on the sudden decrease in popularity, Thompson said, "It was a close-run thing for number 68, but I thought Cheese Gourmet Monthly just edged it for their terrific piece on Blue Wensleydale in the August issue. I placed RS above Woman's Realm, which has had some fairly insipid knitting patterns latel
  12. I suppose this properly belongs in After the Show but I'm putting it here. I caught the first night of the Buffalo Tom 25th anniversary shows and it was great. Eugene Mirman opened with a brief but funny set. Ted Leo played a solo set that rocked - and included a really nice cover of Whiskey Bottle. Buffalo Tom opened with five straight rockers and then the guests came out. J Mascis played lots of solos, Tanya Donelly sang beautifully, Ted Leo came back out. Mike O'Malley sang The Seeker as part of the encore and then Mascis came back out for a tasty cover of Cortez the Killer. SET
  13. KevinG - maybe I'm missing your point but where is defense being rewarded? Neither Verlander nor Braun won the MVP based on their defense.
  14. That's fine but then it should be clear that pitchers are not eligible for MVP votes. What annoys me is when writers/voters take it on themselves to decide that pitchers are not eligible when the rules state that they are. Yes, I am still bitter about Pedro Martinez in 1999 (and the NY Post's George King).
  15. Justin Verlander wins AL MVP: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7265534/cy-young-winner-justin-verlander-detroit-tigers-wins-al-mvp

  17. Cool graphic on this website showing the change in sales in different formats from 1980 to 2010. http://recordloungelocal.tumblr.com/post/9252000768/music-media-sales-1980-2010
  18. I saw them a bunch of times between 1986 and 1988 when I was living in NYC and found them sort of hit or miss. For me they really hit their groove (pun sort of intended) when James joined the band on Painful. There is definitely great stuff to be found on their earlier albums but I think they became consistently great starting with Painful.
  19. I've been a big fan for a while and won't disagree with any previous recommendations. My three favorites are: I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass Electr-o-Pura I don't listen to Summer Sun all that much and The Sounds of the Sounds of Science doesn't do much for me. They are also a great live band. Enjoy the show ...
  20. There was a nice article in this week's Boston Phoenix about Columbia House records. In the early days of CDs I certainly built up my library through both Columbia House and BMG. http://thephoenix.com/Boston/music/129722-rise-and-fall-of-the-columbia-house-record-clu/
