Can't believe I didn't pick that up when I saw them the other night. How is it?

2010 MLB - Playoffs and hot stove!
Oil Can Boyd replied to Duck-Billed Catechist's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Yup, it's pretty stunning. Not quite as bad as when Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove the year he only played 28 games in the field, but still pretty bad. -

Dawes on with Craig Ferguson
Oil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song
On Dawes' facebook page last night they wrote "ATTN DETROIT: The venue for tomorrow's show has been changed to the Majestic Cafe. See ya there!?" -
Ditto on feeling that grandpaboy's last stand is a messy sketch of a bunch of ideas. And also ditto on the request for a link to the two songs ...

Dawes on with Craig Ferguson

Saw these guys last night and while it was good, it didn't blow me away. Maybe it was that it was the third time I've seen them this year. The stuff they do well was still really good. Great harmonies. I love watching (and listening to) Griffin Goldsmith play the drums. He's got a great style. But the new songs they played were not so great, including one real stinker ("Fire Away") that my friend said sounded like they were trying to be Bon Jovi. It was still fun but maybe I need to give myself a little break from them. -
My recollection is that they did make it clear what they were doing, and I totally agree that the audience response is the main part of what makes it interesting. I liked that New Yorker article, as well. I didn't know much about Cage.

I saw the Magnetic Fields play it once. It was the end of the two-night show playing all of 69 Love Songs. People were clapping for an encore and the band came out to the front of the stage, one of them started the timer on their watch, and they just stood there. It actually got an interesting reaction. Most people watched quietly, there was a lot of nervous laughter, and one guy started screaming at them. He went right up towards the stage and started shouting "this is lame, play something!"

No kidding. He's looked great. I heard someone say on the radio "you couldn't get a BB past him the way he's playing ..."

Every time I play that at home (which is pretty often) my 12 year old daughter rolls her eyes and says "this is that CD where the singer swears all the time."

Bettie Serveert - Palomine Saw them last night and they were really good; they have an amazing new drummer. But there was something a little sad about it. Small crowd (75 people maybe), playing in the same club they have played many times. I don't know. Maybe I'm just feeling old ...

Yeah - they did the recent reissues of the first two Feelies albums that came out last year. I know Freedy Johnston's last album was on Bar/None but I have no idea who else they handle.

via pitchfork: The Feelies Plan First Album in Two Decades Fans of ancestral indie rock, get excited. In 2008, New Jersey postpunk pioneers the Feelies reunited to play a few shows and reissued their classic out-of-print albums. They must've liked the way things went, since they're now getting ready to release a new album, their first since 1991's Time for a Witness. The new LP is due next spring on Bar/None, produced by band members Bill Million and Glenn Mercer. As of right now, the band has finished recording the album's basic tracks.

Yup - the Burma/Wilco show was at the Fleet Boston Pavilion/Harborlights place on the waterfront.

I've seen a bunch of tributes on line today but that's one of the nicest (with the exception of the one a-hole). I think most people remember the first time they met (or saw) Billy. For me it was in the late 1980s at the Rat and he pogoed through the crowd, with drinks in both hands, got up on stage, twirled around and then went back through the crowd. When we left the place, he was out front handing out flyers for some show he was promoting. I remember talking to people the next day and everyone just kept saying, "oh sure - that's Billy."

Love that song ...

It may not mean much to folks outside of Boston but for anyone around here the death of Billy Ruane is a big loss for the Boston music scene. Billy Ruane RIP

The Zooey Deschanel Appreciation Thread
Oil Can Boyd replied to stooka's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I know I've already pimped my friend's movie about getting the Kinks back together ( ) but Zooey is one of the people he interviews and she is very endearing (and a big Kinks fan). -
I went through that phase with Harborcoat when I was 20.

Golden Smog? Or was there something before that?

Oil Can Boyd replied to partyroy's topic in Someone Else's Song
Wow - what a sad article. I saw him play a few months ago and it was pretty good but a little weird. He played a ton of songs, one right after the other, without stopping. His voice sounded great and it reminded me of how many good songs he has written but he didn't seem all that engaged.
