  1. University in the UK in 1980-3, so there were a few of the likes of Elvs Costello and U2 doing the University circuit in those years - everyone who had broken through in the New Wave from '78 on. Suppose U2 might qualify as legends - though ever since Bono started wearing sunglasses they lost me. They came twice - first essentially a bar gig at the Student Union bar on a 'Boy' tour, second time the night 'War' went to number 1 in the UK album charts. They definitely had something right from the beginning, though they walked a fine line between charisma and twatishness.
  2. Shouldn't that be in the 'Is this our Louie B' thread? (Only kidding) And isn't 'Beatnik instructions' an oxymoron? :-)
  3. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - The Legend of Xanadu or Split Enz - Six Months in a Leaky Boat
  4. Indeed. There was also the Godley & Creme offshoot who had a few hits in the UK in the early 80s and also produced videos for others. I found out today that 10cc are playing an outdoor show at our local outdoor swimming pool in the summer, which is quite strange. No idea which members play under that name now. I seem to remember they lost a lot of money trying to develop a guitar/synth device back in the day.
  5. Lunch/snack/drink here. it's all about the location ... http://www.sevenhillshotel.com/photogallery
  6. Now that's a gig poster waiting to happen. http://www.drawger.com/hewgill/?article_id=13349 http://www.jodyhewgill.com
  7. Would be nice to see him in Lubbock. I suppose he'll be doing a few special covers that night.
  8. The day of the week will be important as Aya Sofia and Topkapi Palace have (different) days closed during the week. To do both might be impossible - better 2 days with an early start at both to avoid typically long queues for entrance. So, given you only have 1 day, go for Aya Sofia (assuming it is open on the day you go). My favourite building in the whole world. The Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque with a bit of wandering in between might be the totality of your day but it really is hard to go wrong in Istanbul. Stay around the tip of the horn - being an ancient city most things compact aroun
  9. Tangential JT reference in interview with Nick Offerman http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-nick-offerman-parks-and-recreation-20140411,0,7928911,full.story#axzz2yz5t9Y46 Oops.
  10. Well, On her actual 75th birthday Mavis will be in London. Just found out and just got a ticket and have been doing a bit of grooving to YouTube this morning. At the very appropriate Union Chapel. I think it will be a good place fo a final warm-up gig, with a few special guests perhaps?
  11. Can anyone point me at the clip on video anywhere i.e. like someone did with the Portlandia appearance? The one I found somewhere (Stereogum?) was for Colonials only. Ta.
  12. So this is what you get up to when Wilco are on vacation. I suppose you will have your emergency kit bag to hand though with lycra Setlist Man suit, shiny underpants and setlist notepad and pencil utility belt in case you get the call that there is a show somewhere and need to hit the road in an emergency. Be prepared and all that …
  13. Nice slapstick moment with the guitar falling over and the deadpan olden days section..
  14. Wait 'till you see Ross without his sunglasses - then you'll see how really young he looks. He's very shy too. I can confirm they are very nice lads though after meeting them at an in-store last year. Their little whirlwind of publicity may have passed in the UK (unfortunately) but it would be great to see them take off in the US. Edit: Here's the other thread with some excellent clips http://viachicago.org/topic/48693-the-strypes-outrageously-good-17-year-olds-from-cavan-ireland/
  15. Nice to hear. When asked in an early interview what they got up to after a gig, the drummer replied that he liked to have plenty of water and an early night, ending with "I'm quite set in my ways", which made me laugh for someone so young.
  16. London! London! London! Come on, you must have loads of airmiles burning a hole in your pocket JT.
  17. Metro Manila Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle - best comedy on TV at present. Clever and funny.

  19. Gene Clark music bio just finished on BBC4. Very informative. Reminded me I once had that McGuinn Clark and Hillman LP back in the day, but apart from that and the Byrds I don't know any of his (solo) work - alot of which sounded great from the film snippets. Dillard and Clark for example. Any recommendations or an introductory compilation to go for? Edit : it was this film. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/blogs/alternate-take/new-film-reveals-the-sad-flight-of-the-byrds-gene-clark-20140219

  21. Not been to Olympia but I get the impression it's not the best of sites. I would recommend Mystras (on the side of the mountain above Sparta which itself has little in the way of remains - Mystras is A deserted Byzantine town, and Napflio as a base for Mycenae (and it also has Tiryns on the edge of the town for the real Homer geeks).
  22. Well, that was largely the result of another border-defining mess after WWI. BTW, I am equally supportive of the aspirations of the western Ukrainians. They have expressed their own need for self determination very bravely. Don't confuse an assessment of a situation with personal preferences for an ideal world. What I am saying is that there are so many examples from history that it is just not worth forcing an unnatural single state to exist. It only leads to tension for extremists to exploit e.g. your example with Hitler and now this with Putin (or if not the cunning but sane Putin, then
