  1. I thought the article was well done. I just heard some pompous idiot in the beer line at Summerstage last Thursday telling a couple of ladies that Wilco was "America's Radiohead". My friends and I started laughing at him and making jokes at his expense. It's a lazy comparison from which the writer of the piece actually made something worthwhile.
  2. It's also another cover. Jeff played that song at Maxwell's last December. He explained that he had heard a great version of it on a Linda Thompson bootleg. He also said she recorded it for a record and it was "utter dogshit". He also played it with the fadeout just like the vinyl version. EDIT: It is originally a Brian Patten poem.
  3. Absolutely. The crowd on the first night sucked. There were a lot of assholes talking way too much during the quieter songs.
  4. One Sunday Morning to start was absolutely incredible. Pin drop quiet and just amazing.
  5. At least they have that fun game for everyone to play. What a bunch of garbage.
  6. I hope so. Waterfront in Brooklyn is clear that Friday so maybe. Fleet Foxes there on Saturday so that knocks out that possibility.
  7. Jeff's set by memory and possibly out of order. Spiders IATTBYH Via Chicago Gun One Wing The Ruling Class Be Not So Fearful ??? (Linda Thompson Cover) Shot In The Arm
  8. I was there. Great night of music. Jeff played a nine song solo set and then sat in for these songs with Yo La Tengo. Eight Day Weekend ("Seven Day Weekend" by Doc Pomus, performed by Gary "U.S." Bonds) (with Jeff Tweedy on guitar and vocals) From A Motel 6 (with JT) Jesus Etc. (Wilco) (with JT) Can't Forget (with JT) Chords of Fame (Phil Ochs) (with JT) The Race Is On Again (with JT) One Of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later) (Bob Dylan) (with JT) Shoppin' For Clothes (Doc Pomus, performed by the Coasters) (with JT) I Should Have Known Better (with JT) Jeff didn't actually sing backup vocals o
  9. I went to the show from out of town last night and had a really good time. The band played well, the sound was pretty good and the crowd was, uh, enthusiastic? I think it must have varied widely based on where you were in the crowd. There were a few idiots around me, dead center halfway between the stage and the soundboard, but nothing too terrible. The band were smiling and laughing the whole night so it certainly seemed like they had a good time. "In The Street" was a nice surprise and they played a few songs that I hadn't heard in a while. It wasn't the greatest Wilco show I've ever seen, b

  11. I just read online that, according to the Cyclones box office, the set times tonight are YLT at 7 and Wilco at 8.
  12. Cried some earlier because it is too much to process. Listening to 4/28/05 to remember how good they were. Thanks, Jay.
  13. Something more but nothing official Link
  14. The archived stream of the show is up at NPR for those who missed it last night.
  15. I certainly wouldn't call Television a post-punk band. They were playing CBGB's before The Ramones, and would be associated with the first wave of New York punk bands. There were a lot of great post-punk bands, and there were a lot of terrible ones as well. Simon Reynolds's book, Rip It Up And Start Again, is a nice overview of the era. It's become a catch-all phrase that takes a lot of disparate bands under one umbrella.
  16. I wasn't sure where to put this. I am coming to Chicago for the Saturday show. I am staying reasonably close to the Riviera Theater. I'm wondering if someone could give me some advice about good bars or restaurants in the general area. I'm looking for casual places that preferably have a good beer selection. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions? Thanks
  17. The Replacements: Hootenanny, Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me Husker Du: Metal Circus, Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, and Flip Your Wig Neil Young: Everybody Knows... through Rust Never Sleeps That one is even more impressive if you take out American Stars and Bars and replace it with Chrome Dreams Those are some other great runs. There are a lot of bands who you can put in this conversation.
  18. They did play Manhattan and Brooklyn in June. However, that was the first time since NYE 2004. I can understand some people wondering if the band enjoys playing here. Considering every show is a guaranteed sell out and the wide array of venues, I don't think booking shows here would be a problem.
  19. Just got two for Saturday night. Very excited. Never been to Chicago and this seems like a great reason to make my first trip.
  20. Pretty girl keep growin' up, playin' make-up, wearin' guitar Growin' old in a bar, ya grow old in a bar Well, a person can work up a mean mean thirst After a hard day of nothin' much at all Your age is the hardest age Everything drags and drags You're looking funny You ain't laughing, are you? Everybody at your party They all look depressed Everybody dressin' funny Color me impressed Sittin' at home, I'm so excited Goin' to the party tho' we weren't invited Label wants a hit and we don't give a shit Well, you say that you'll both be real happy You forgot to tell your eyes
  21. I have inserted my copy of the CD and I am connected to the internet. However, nothing is popping up for me to run extras. Can anyone help me out here?
  22. Sound of Lies This wonderful post on the Jayhawks' Sound of Lies on the Aquarium Drunkard blog got me to thinking about underrated records. They can be from artists who are well-known, obscure, and everything in between. I thought it might be interesting to start a thread where people can talk about records that they think are very underrated. Post links, MP3s, and whatever else you want in an attempt to interest people in your choice(s). I'll start by talking about Public Image LTD's Flowers of Romance. Released after the post-punk classic, Metal Box, it was a major left turn for the band
  23. If you want to criticize Pitchfork for being elitist hipsters, this is not the example to use. This collection is a pathetic cash grab. If Columbia wants to release it, people have every right to criticize it for being inessential. If a different outlet had printed the same review, I am willing to bet you wouldn't be accusing them of being hipsters who think they are smarter than the rest of us.
  24. They are more than worth it. I am going to see them Sunday and Monday in New York and I can't wait. Any thoughts on the new record? I think it is excellent.
  25. I don't have an account at any of these or any idea how to work FLAC's. If anyone could post a YSI of the MP3's for Chrome Dreams, I would be very thankful.
