I am bored at work today, so I went back to 2006 to see who was being talked about in this forum. Some of the names are still around: Andrew Bird Portastatic Voxtrot Ben Kweller Augie March Tim Easton Ted Leo Richard Buckner Calexico Rhett Miller M Ward Neko Case Aimee Mann New Pornographers belle and sebastian Pretty dire result, IMHO. I'd say out of that list, the ones I hear about most often on here are Neko, M. Ward and Aimee Mann. Interestingly, it seems like the artists with the most "legs" on VC are solo acts, not bands. The only one out of that bunch who I have gravitated toward is

Nice! Here's a good review of the show in Boston a few nights ago: http://www.bostonher...s-quadrophenia/ By the way, may I just say that Ira Robbins can kiss my ass? Okay, I feel better now.

I reviewed the Orlando show (briefly) in After the Show: http://viachicago.org/topic/48529-the-who-110312-orlando-fl-amway-arena/ I say go.

Dump The Fed. Is it even possible??
Mr. Heartbreak replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I read an interesting article on this a while back. It basically dispelled the notion that ending the Fed would do any good whatsoever. The article's main point was that, if you ended the Fed, the powers that be would just form something else with a different name, but just as nefarious - if not more so - than the existing system. Entrenched powers will do what it takes to hold on to their power. And the gold standard ain't coming back. -
That Veneta show has never been released? WTF? Because they figure everyone already has it? I don't get that...

Pretty sure I heard part (instrumental only) of You Never Know on The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd a couple weeks ago.

Wilco song recommendations for my nephew's band?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Magnetized's topic in Just A Fan
I second a few of the ones mentioned here: I'm Always In Love, California Stars, and Monday. All good choices. I also used to do How To Fight Loneliness with a buddy of mine, but I would recommend those three first. -
Homeland and/or Boardwalk Empire
Mr. Heartbreak replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I loved Sopranos and love Boardwalk Empire. Terence Winter does some great work. Boardwalk is only occasionally slow. It has gotten intense, with a fair amount if major characters getting killed. I can see where it might be too dark for some, but not many slow episodes this season. -
Thanks for posting that. I was at that Amway Arena show.

Presidential Race (Respector Edition)
Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I agree that they are meaningless, but I wonder if the same thing happened in all 50 states in 2004 or even 2008? I think it is a testament to the far-right media that they have so successfully demonized Obama that people truly believe he is a socialist/communist/secret Kenyan, etc. who is out to destroy America. -

Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
It's not just Texas, it's all 50 states at this point: http://www.examiner....ssion-petitions Which, for me, begs the question: how poisonous has the right-wing Faux News type media really become? They have been quite successful in their demonization of our President, to such a high degree that hundreds of thousands of people are now "in despair," saying, "we lost the country," and also putting out numerous paranoia/crackpot theories about rampant voter fraud, connections between Bengazi and the purportedly stolen election...all kinds of stuff. The tinfoil crowd are still in denial about w -
Excellent, thanks for that!

Presidential Race (Respector Edition)
Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
This has nothing to do with the presidential race, but it is the funniest political-related story of the day, so I figured I'd post the link here. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/13/abc-news-denver-affiliate-paula-broadwell-petraeus-biography_n_2122239.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D234062 -
Presidential Race (Respector Edition)
Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I think the party needs to be very careful how they do that, especially after all the "self-deportation" talk. If they just throw a Latino out there with the idea that all other Latinos will vote for them, that would be just as stupid as picking Palin and thinking women will all vote for her. The top people in the GOP may be rudely surprised, after the fact, to learn that a lot of Mexicans don't like Cubans, a lot of Cubans don't like Puerto Ricans, etc, etc. There is just as much prejudice within the so-called Latino community (well, almost) as there is outside it. You won't get an overwhel -

http://disappearingromney.com/ At this rate, Romney's Facebook page will be gone in a couple of weeks. I seriously can't believe how fast people are "un-liking" his page. Amazing. Just as a phenomenon, it is utterly fascinating. Why would people bother? And yet they are, every minute. Meanwhile, people are liking Obama's page in a steady increase at an even faster rate. The web really is quite a weird place. -

That's a great list. I can vouch for Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune. Great doc, even if you're not familiar with the subject. -

I agree with you on all these points...and if we can agree, then so can the politicians in Washington. Their jobs depend on it. One more post from Nate, showing that, yes, Romney really did get a shellacking. Those two points in the popular vote are actually a lot: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/08/as-nation-and-parties-change-republicans-are-at-an-electoral-college-disadvantage/?ref=politics -

Yes, you can hardly blame Rachel Maddow, et al, for cranking up the Gloat-ometer. It's math! Then again, look at some of the comments on climate change. "Oh, there's no such thing as global warming...we had a really cold winter." -

For all those of us who have said for months (or even years), that Romney was "out of touch," here is a little bit more proof. Mitt Romney 'Shellshocked' After Lost Election, Adviser Says http://www.huffingto...d=232168_maing5 I foresee another Bill Maher "Dispatches from the Bubble" segment soon. -

"I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it. It is my style." - George W. Bush, November 2004, after winning with 286 electoral votes "The recognition that we have common hopes and dreams won’t end all the gridlock or solve all our problems or substitute for the painstaking work of building consensus and making the difficult compromises needed to move this country forward." - Barack Obama, November 2012, after winning with 332 electoral votes Hard to believe the difference in their reactions to winning a second term. Makes me proud to be a liberal. -

Absolutely true. I have the DVD of the Zappa one on Overnight Sensation & Apostrophe, and have watched it more than once. It's really funny to try to picture Tina Turner and the Ikettes singing about dental floss.
