  1. So much for Obama & company taking anybody's guns away. Talk about hysteria.
  2. I actually thought this thread would be kind of dull, just chock full of iconic classics that everyone knows. Shows you how little I know (and how bad I am at predicting things!). Instead, it's loaded with all sorts of obscure stuff I've never heard of...hmmm, will have to check some of it out. Since there are so many lesser-known albums mentioned here, I will add a few more that I really like from start to finish when I put them on: Bruce Cockburn - Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws Phil Ochs - There and Now: Live In Vancouver 1968 (Actually recorded in '69, but hey, that's the 60s for ya) Han
  3. I actually like that as a headline better than "Guns are unnecessary."
  4. Not really a big Zep fan (they were so overplayed on the radio where I grew up, I never felt the need to buy their records, because I knew so many songs word for word from the saturation), so I am kind of a fly in the ointment on ITTOD. I actually like Fool in the Rain and All My Love better than most of their other stuff. Go figure.
  5. I can't believe Glenn Beck and I agree on something: Alex Jones is a freaking madman. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/09/piers-morgan-alex-jones-gun-control_n_2438963.html Best argument for background checks I've ever seen. Hell, maybe mental health testing.
  6. I'm with you on the weather, because I live in south Florida. Sometimes it gets downright cold here in Dec-Feb, but so far this is a beautiful January. It's 61 in Tampa right now, and it's almost 10 pm. Pretty sweet. It's like the gorgeous days we used to get in the spring and fall in New England when I was growing up, highs in the 70s or low 80s and lows in the 60s.
  7. I am sure that won't happen, but you have to admit it would be hilarious.
  8. Unless they somehow muff it, I will have to go with Breaking Bad,
  9. You guys are a lot more forgiving than me...I can really only think of a handful, even including my favorites. I would add Coltrane's Love Supreme. That's about it.
  10. I couldn't think of any, until you listed those. However, even Highway 61 would be improved without From A Buick 6. Maybe Dark Side of the Moon and One Size Fits All...
  11. Can't believe I forgot Ray Collins. Of course, he wasn't on the list I was looking through, but I'm a big FZ fan (obviously), so I'm a little embarrassed I spaced on Ray. I know we will always lose more...I just hope 2013 isn't one of those years where we lose multiple marquee names again. Some of our heroes are in their 60s and 70s now.
  12. I was just reviewing one of those "Celebrities We Lost in 2012" stories, and being reminded what a rough year it was for losing people known in the music world: Etta James, Ravi Shankar, Levon Helm, Bob Welch, Scott McKenzie, Whitney Houston, Jon Lord, Kitty Wells, Robin Gibb, Donna Summer, Chuck Brown, Adam Yauch, Davy Jones, Andy Williams, Earl Scruggs, Marvin Hamlisch, Duck Dunn, Dave Brubeck... Granted, I might not have considered all of these people important artists, but they were a huge part of a lot of people's lives at one point or another. Hope we don't lose too many like that in 201
  13. Damn, dude. I don't have any kids, but I am old enough to be your father, and you just gave me some hope about your entire generation. Represent!
  14. Here's another preview: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2013/jan/09/low-just-make-it-stop
  15. Nothing wrong with speculating about it, guys. I've been in recovery for 24 years, and when we get together, we tell war stories about this stuff ad nauseum. I'm sure ol' Gary has already had many conversations about it, and will have many more in the years to come. FYI, "chemical dependency" could simply be alcoholism, as that falls under the chemical dependency heading (as opposed to, say, compulsive overeating/anorexia/bulimia or gambling). Oddly enough, there is still a stigma in some people's minds about alcoholism...I remember a girlfriend of mine saying she would rather be an addict tha
  16. I'll be the first to admit I am often nostalgic for the "glory days" of Being There through YHF, at least as far as the material (if not always the production) on the official releases. That being said, I am always looking forward to new material, with the hope that I will find some new favorites, or at least something that reaches the level of, say, One Sunday Morning. I'd be happy with archival or B-side type releases, too, just not necessarily my first priority. At least if it's brand new, there is a real element of novelty.
  17. Sounds like a terrible, cheesy idea, but it's actually quite good!
  18. Shared by Wilco on my Facebook timeline. Very strange learning this news via Wilco, of all people. Makes me a little sad. I loved Rescue Me in particular, but she was really great in general. Right up there with Aretha in the vocal arena, IMHO. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/dec/28/fontella-bass
  19. For those reasons (and probably a few others), I will be saving my $ when the Mickey Hart tour comes to town. Sorry, Mick!
  20. Nov 3 - The Who - Quadrophenia. Already reviewed here in After the Show. What else can you say? http://viachicago.org/topic/48529-the-who-110312-orlando-fl-amway-arena/?p=1514542 Dec 11 - Aerosmith - I didn't do a full review of this, but discussed it a little in the Aerosmith thread. They exceeded expectations. Movin' Out was a real highlight, one of my favorite Aerosmith tunes. Mar 10 - Elton John - Possibly the best Elton show I have seen, hard to say. First time I ever got a Holiday Inn, Harmony or Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word. Life changing. http://viachicago.org/topic/47554-elton-j
  21. Later in that same passage, Susan Crutcher denies this ever happened, saying Gast might have been "dreaming" or "hallucinating," but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happened. Because the Dead were so often associated with the peace & love stuff from S.F., there was always a persistent notion that they were beatific hippies, but I remember reading Trixie Garcia saying that they were more like "a bunch of cynical, shit-talking, dark-humored guys: a band of pirates, really." That being said, I doubt they had many such incidents, or they would not have been able to stay together so lon
  22. Hmm, looks like the '77 ones I just got AREN'T any of the "Betty boards"... 5/11, 5/17, 5/18, & 5/26. They are clearly not AUD recordings, as the crowd noise is always faint and distant... Anyway, thanks for the info!
  23. Just downloaded a few soundboards from spring '77 that I've never heard before, so it looks like it will be a Dead Xmas/New Year stretch. Boy, when you're in the mood for it, those echoey '77 boards are pretty sweet. I always wondered why the sound was that way for just that year. They seem to sound the same in every venue, totally different from '76, '78, or any other year, for that matter. Anyone know the story behind that?
  24. I missed The Who's set on the 12/12 deal, but I'm surprised to see so many negative comments on Daltrey's performance. Maybe he didn't sing as well as he did when I saw them last month. He does have a limited ability to hit all the high notes at this point, but didn't try on some of them. For 68, he sounded great...in person, anyway.
