Are you ready for the Apocalypse?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Too soon, man. Too soon. -
I have seen some setlists from their shows, and was aware they mix it up quite a bit...so I was surprised (and pleased) that they actually opened with Low.

Music in a foreign language? You listen to much?

No, just Cracker. They were headlining a benefit for the local community radio station, WMNF...it's like a festival: 60 bands on 9 stages around the Latin quarter (Ybor City). "Loser" is their cover of a Jerry Garcia song that was part of the Grateful Dead's repertoire for many years. It's on Kerosene Hat.

I will be seeing them again when they come this way.

Pretty damn good intro to this band as a live act. I don't know their whole catalog, but they did just about everything I could want to have heard, and then some. Set list heavy on early tunes. Here's what I know for sure they did (not in any order except for the opening song): Low Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now) Get Off This Happy Birthday To Me Mr. Wrong Loser Euro-Trash Girl Sweet Potato There was a lot more, but like I said, I don't know their whole catalog. Real solid 90-minute set from a great band.

This, to me, is the most exciting part. I seriously hope they release all the previously unreleased Syd material sooner rather than later.

I didn't say it was not a very inspiring song. I pointed out the fact that as an opener, it's not likely to get a crowd on its feet. I was there. It didn't. Contrast that song with rockers like I'm The Man Who Loves You, A Shot In The Arm, Casino Queen, or Outtasite (Outta Mind), and you might get my point.

Do your siblings have the same musical taste as you?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
My brother and I are both Deadheads. 'Nuff said! Nah, not really. Other than Jerry and the boys, and a few classic rock icons like Hendrix and the Stones, we probably don't like all that much of the same stuff. He's more into what I would consider some of the weirder bands from the 80s - 90s (Jane's Addiction, Meat Puppets, Phish), while I'm a huge jazz fanatic and heavily into guitar players who never really made the mainstream (Zappa, Bruce Cockburn, John McLaughlin, etc.). -
This again? And five pages' worth? I've been in the middle of this debate before, and have been at some shows where it was an issue (classic Tweedy quote: "Now that we've got you on your feet, we're going to put you back in your seats again." Something like that.) I completely agree with High Heat's comment that it's the band's job to get people on their feet. One of the most contentious theatre shows I have attended - where people were up and down, pockets of people were up, some never up - opened with Muzzle of Bees. Come on, Muzzle of Bees? It's an okay song, but doesn't inspire people

Middle Brother Album Streaming

Never heard of these guys, but I'm listening to the link on NPR, and holy shit they sound like Golden Smog on "Blue Eyes." Pretty good! Thanks for posting. -
http://www.spinner.com/2011/04/26/phoebe-snow-poetry-man-dies/?flv=1 Not that I was a huge fan, but that was a nice song back in the day...

Basically, most of the first few Van Halen albums do it for me. In fact, it's my most productive workout music, and I never listen to it while driving, for fear it will make me even more of a "lead foot" than I already am!

Most Beautiful Songs that Break Your Heart

Good call on To Love Somebody. I have a live Nina Simone version of that song, and it always gets me. There's another one that always brings a lump to my throat and I'd actually like to see it replace the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem: This Land Is Your Land by Woody Guthrie. Other top contenders: Joni Mitchell - A Case Of You Elton John - Skyline Pigeon Neal Casal - On The Mend Graham Nash - I Used To Be A King Jerry Garcia - Mission In The Rain Golden Smog - Please Tell My Brother Emmylou Harris - Boulder To Birmingham Emmylou/Gram - Love Hurts Bob Weir - Looks Like Rain D -
Exceptional Wilco / Tweedy Performances
Mr. Heartbreak replied to winterland121072's topic in Just A Fan
11/2/02 & 11/03/02. Two of the rockingest Wilco shows I have ever attended, and both are up on owl / bear. Get 11/2 for the sound quality and 11/3 for the performance. -
Wow, I will sound like a madman to many of you. I have about 230gb of stuff in my iTunes, with 100gb of material on my 120gb iPod. I also have about 300-400 folders of stuff to get to, mainly live shows or other downloads. I usually end up putting them into my iTunes, listening to them once, and then unchecking them in iTunes so they're no longer on my iPod! With this amount of material, the shuffle feature is crazy, because I often have no idea what I'm listening to. I hardly ever use that feature, though. I just put all this new stuff into a constantly-changing folder called New to Library

Thanks for all the reviews and setlists, bbop. I have been pretty fanatical about writing down setlists ever since my first Dead concerts in the early 80s, so I always like seeing what's being played at shows, and your detailed reviews add a lot of color.

How not to subdue a f*&^(ing CHILD
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Good Old Neon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I say, Good job, officer whatever-your-name-is. That kid sounds like a future criminal. Hopefully, he has learned a valuable lesson. Kids today are totally out of control, largely as a result of parents being unwilling or unable to truly comprehend their responsibility to be parents. Kids need to know that adults are in charge, not them. In the past ten years, I can't count how many times I have had to move to my left or right, while walking through a store, to avoid running down some stupid kid. When I was a kid, if an adult was heading my way, I got the fuck out of his way! If a police off -
Great reviews, everybody. Bbop, that new blog is great. You rule!

Amazon Launches Cloud Player
Mr. Heartbreak replied to choo-choo-charlie's topic in Someone Else's Song
I feel the same way. I love the iTunes/iPod model, but even that is hardly a solution for me, as I now have well over three hundred gigs of music, and can't store it all on any one device. For that reason alone, the cloud player offers nothing to me.... -
