Sky Blue Sky - Confession of a Relatively New Fan
Mr. Heartbreak replied to xTonyWonder's topic in Just A Fan
One of the main problems with SBS - and the same could be said for WTA - is that fans are divided on many of the songs. I don't mean slightly divided, I mean passionately. "I hate Walken." "I love Shake It Off." "What Light is one of Wilco's worst songs." "Impossible Germany is one of my favorite songs." Etc, etc. People feel really strongly pro or con about maybe every song. Contrast that with ST, YHF and even AGIB. Sure, there were a few songs that some people didn't like, but there was an awful lot of talk like "Best Wilco record yet" and "I love every song on this album." I know different -
I like the music okay, but the lyrics are pretty horrible ... consequently, I don't really like the song.

Hilariously articulate.

I like WTA better than SBS. Not that it's a fantastic album, but it has elements of the Wilco catalogue that I like, whereas almost every song on SBS has major aspects of the newer Wilco that I just don't much like...

The Whole Love: Speculation and (eventual) reactions
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Al.Ducts's topic in Just A Fan
I completely agree with this sentiment. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this, because this band has been an important part of my musical life for a while now! -
Seconded.

I love Jeff, but Katy Perry is way hotter. Just sayin'...

Here's a ranking I don't think you've seen yet. 1. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 2. Summerteeth 3. Being There 4. A Ghost Is Born 5. A.M. 6. Wilco (The Album) 7. Sky Blue Sky

Brian Eno is producing the new Coldplay album
Mr. Heartbreak replied to WaronWar's topic in Someone Else's Song
Eno has done such great work with so many people. Maybe for once he said, "Eh, fuck these guys," and just picked up the paycheck. -
Nice. I actually like this better than I Might, which I played once or twice and promptly forgot. I especially appreciate the fact that Nels plays a short, tasteful solo instead of a lengthy wankfest.

Thanks, kidsmoke. I'm 46, but after that run I instantly felt 47. Heh. Thanks for the live show offer, that definitely gives me some extra incentive to finish a 5K! You know I will take you up on that.

That is hilarious. I literally laughed out loud. But who the hell was that guy (who fell off the stage at the end)? Wilco needs to get back to more of that loud, loose feeling, like they had in those days.

My big accomplishment this summer has been getting back to running, after a long layoff last fall and winter. Last night I did 2.85 miles in 26:56. Still slower than I'd like, but at my age, that speed feels fast, as in, I'm huffing and puffing to maintain it! Hope to run a 5K before the summer is over, which would be my first in several years.

See, not everyone gets the same thing out of Wilco, which is one reason why there's so much arguing amongst the fan base. I find the clip interesting, but I'm not particularly psyched to learn that the new album will really "unleash" Nels ... if, indeed, it will. As a long term fan, I feel we already get plenty of Nels on just about every song. God, seeing them live, it's like, "Can't this guy chill through a song a little bit, just one here and there? Does he really have to inject a lightning speed solo into Forget The Flowers? Give it a rest, gramps. We get it. You can play." Heh. But honest

Wow, what are the odds of that? I had to go straight through all three, otherwise I would forget who any of the characters were...they're almost types, more than characters, but it still holds up pretty well after over 80 years.

I have been rereading the entire John Dos Passos U.S.A. trilogy, which I first read in college about 25 years ago. It's hard to believe there used to be an actual socialist party in the U.S., or that people sat around talking about "putting the brakes on capital." If you talked like that here now, someone would probably lynch you.

I guess not! They still got a decent-sized crowd, though, for a small GA venue.

1.) A buddy of mine turned me on to Wilco via a cassette tape of the epic Jeff Tweedy solo show from The Lounge Ax, 3/26/98. This was in early 1999. I found myself going back to the tape often, even though it had some songs with very weird, oblique lyrics, like She's A Jar and Via Chicago. The songs were solid, and the guy was clearly a pretty compelling performer. (Classic banter moment - Audience Member: You rule! JT: I wouldn't be up here if I didn't know that. It's a problem.) 2.) Later that year, I heard on my local community radio station that they were giving away 2 tickets to an upco

Does anyone else find Skyler an incredibly annoying character? I always thought she was pretty horrible, even going back to the beginning of the series, where Walt seemed almost like the stereotypical henpecked husband and she seemed like the ultimate ball-busting beeyotch. (Your husband has to work a part-time job washing his students' cars so you can be a stay-at-home mom? Really?) I found her more than a little sanctimonious when she learned that Walt was cooking, but now that she has come into the business on some level, and is telling lies left and right, it's kind of oddly amusing to obs

For me, it just keeps getting better and better. I really think it's the best thing on right now. This last episode was the best of the season, so far. The tension keeps building and building, but there was still enough humor provided by Saul and the Walt vs. Skyler scene to keep it from being unbearable.

Interview with Jeff Tweedy on Hawaii Public Radio
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Magnetized's topic in Just A Fan
He said, "Big Aloha, bro." And yes, he does sound like a total stoner who simply doesn't realize he comes across as a douche. -
Your favorite concert openings, enterances ever?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I had the exact same experience, except I was maybe 13. Joe Perry was so badass back then, it's hard to explain to people who weren't there. Those guys played like they were going to spontaneously combust, and in fact, they almost did! Others: First Dead show: opened with Alabama Getaway, and they never seemed to slow down for the rest of the show. First Wilco show: opened with CA Stars, and I was hooked from then on; during the 2002 tour, I saw them open with I Am Trying To Break Your Heart a few times, and every one of them was special. Sir Paul's Crusade Against the Evil Meat Empire
Mr. Heartbreak replied to sonicshoulder's topic in Someone Else's Song
Actually, he is protesting a murder, because - wait for it - meat is murder! I'm with uncle2pillow. I think Paul can do what he wants. Now, if someone wants to sneak in a Slim Jim, he can't do anything about that... -
I'm kind of relieved that they cancelled, although I think I would have enjoyed Band Of Horses. They were free tickets anyway, so no big deal. Maybe I'll see them when they open for Band Of Horses next time around.
