No surprise here - The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out! on the original Verve label ... worth a couple pesos, since it's in mint playing condition. Other contenders: Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates of Dawn and the Masters of Rock Dutch import compilation. My double album of Woody Allen's early 60s standup material. Syd Barrett - The gatefold combo of Madcap Laughs and Barrett. Firesign Theatre - How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You're Not Anywhere At All? The Velvet Underground & Nico

Great call. He is excellent, and not well known at all. Good to hear he's still doing good stuff.

I'm gonna have to disagree with y'all about Uncle Frankie. Although Zappa said he considered his lyrics to be pretty much "stupid stuff," many of them were brilliant, and even some of the ones that were mainly funny had great imagery. Check out the lyrics to: Trouble Every Day Brown Shoes Don't Make It Mom & Dad My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama Camarillo Brillo Dirty Love St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast Excentrifugal Forz Evelyn, A Modified Dog San Ber'dino Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy Muffin Man The Torture Never Stops Flakes Joe's Garage These are all great songs musically, but the l

My wife and I were just talking about this last night. I HATE that stupid word utilize, which is just a three-syllable word for use ... a perfectly plain and, well, useful word.

Van Fkkn! Halen: Hall of Famers
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Sir Stewart's topic in Someone Else's Song
This is a great thread, but now that I finally got around to reading it, I don't know who to talk about: Van Halen? Van Hagar? Billie Holiday? Ozzie? Well, I'll weigh in on the Van Halen thing first, I guess. I read a very snarky music critic ragging on Van Halen in his blog or whatever earlier this week, citing some of the Sammy Hagar material. The fact is, you could take at least 3 or 4 songs off each of the first 3 Van Halen albums and make up an absolutely kickass rock mix. They were loud, over the top, and fun. And they could play well, too. Once Hagar joined ... meh. When I think of Va -

Since she has the mental ability of a baby, it seems pretty darn ethical. Their blog shows that they considered the issues carefully and made the right decision ... like the fact that the more a person weighs, the more problems they will develop with bedsores, which can lead to serious infections. They even considered what many think of as the unthinkable: the possibility of future pregancy by an abusive caregiver, which does happen. Seems they were quite thoughtful and deliberate in this. Good for them.

It sounded like the samples in the movie were solo acoustic, both of "The Snake Song" and "When She Don't Need Me." Do the other songs feature multiple instruments?

Ah, so I can just buy the Nashville Sessions and that will get me what I want (solo acoustic versions of the songs). I thought maybe they were tantalizing me with unreleased demos in the movie! It wasn't very clear. Thanks, guys.

I just saw the Townes Van Zandt biopic Be Here To Love Me , and I found I was most interested in hearing more of the songs that wound up on the album The Nashville Sessions , namely "The Snake Song" and "When She Don't Need Me." However, I also understood from the movie that demos of these songs were recorded for a never-released album called Seven Come Eleven. Confused? I was. I might like to pick up the Nashville Sessions, but I'd rather try to trade for the demos if they're all acoustic. Anyone know? Anyone have both? Interesting movie, by the way.

Interesting clip. I saw them in the 80s opening for Joe Cocker, and it was great. They've never shied away from doing a show that's heavy on their hits - Tin Man, Horse With No Name, Ventura Highway and Sister Goldenhair - unlike many bands, who want to move on past their well-know material and never look back. Not sure the new material will hold up, based on what I heard and saw there, but at least they're trying something with some newer artists ... instead of working the same slums as Kansas, Styx, or any number of bands who mainly play state fairs, weird festivals and casinos.

Until NO ONE uses the word, I think it's ridiculous that anybody should be this beat up for using it, no matter how much of a shmuck he was being for using it. The argument that some blacks use - it's okay for me to say it, but not you - doesn't wash at all with me. Even lamer is the "it's okay to say Niggah but not Nigger" argument. Plenty of black people use the word both as a term of endearment AND as a putdown. To try to wield it over white people in a way that says, "You can't say that word because you're white, but I can use it because I'm black" is just pure B.S. We still live in a free

My dos pesos (from my blog) : I suppose the blogosphere is full of OJ today, and no surprise there. Who wouldn't want to comment on the crass public relations debacle surrounding the release of Mr. Simpson's tauntingly titled If I Did It, and the flurry of articles condemning him and it? It just goes to show that we have descended to an all time low point in our culture, even as we righteously flog the dead horse of OJ's guilt or innocence. Still, I can't help feeling that discussing the book, watching the inevitable trainwreck of an interview, or even talking about it, is all sort of like -
I'm thinking that since Tweedy sang the harmony part on Atomic Power, he was asked to do so on this version, and agreed. That would be my guess.
