Dylan has been ragging on the production quality of CDs for 20 years. He did it in Rolling Stone when he was interviewed around that time ('86 or '87). He's right, too. If CDs were so friggin' great, there would never have been a need to remaster, like, all of them, thereby inducing suckers like me to buy things 3 times (once on vinyl way back when, once on CD, and once in the new "remastered with bonus tracks" incarnation.)

I have to say I feel the exact same way. Every time I hear it, it's like fingernails on a blackboard. Some of the lyrics may be good, but a work must have some kind of melody and/or harmony for me to consider it "music." I hear little rap that fits that criteria, and what I have heard that fits the criteria is utterly unappealing to me, and bears too much resemblance to shlocky modern R & B. And yes, I have tried to listen to Paul's Boutique. I could not get through one track of it from start to finish. I consider myself hopeless, and am totally cool with that.

Somebody probably recommended it to him as some good "softcore" reading. Camus talks about women's breasts a lot in it. Also, it's an extraordinarily easy read. I think the biggest word in it is voraciously.
