Mr. Heartbreak

I thought they were all right when I first saw them. They had some pretty good songs, and some not so good songs. The energy was high. They were really, really loud. They rocked. I tried listening to some of their official recorded output, and could not get into it at all. At this point, my enjoyment of this thread is much greater than my enjoyment of their live set. That's not a slam: I am really, really enjoying the direction this thread has taken.

I read a while back that Tampa Bay is a "tertiary" market. Pretty low priority. Still, Florida in general has gotten some great shows over the years that I have enjoyed: everything from big name acts like Paul McCartney and Elton to bands like The Beach Boys (with Brian Wilson) to Wilco to solo singer-writer types like Bruce Cockburn and Patti Larkin. I really expect more people to start coming down in the winter as they get older (e.g., Billy Joel, who is taking a break from his MSG schedule to play Florida this month).

I didn't mean you, necessarily. That was more a general comment based on my experience. MA is pretty small. Unless MMJ plays a set right before Wilco, like at AmericanaramA, we're outta there.

Really. Freaking six-night Wilco residence? I've gotta truck all over Florida, making 6-hour roundtrip treks, just to catch 3 shows. I mean, wtf.

It is kind of weird to me how many people who love MMJ seem bent on "converting" others. I guess that, as a Deadhead, I do a lot of that myself. However, there is a huge difference between "hate" and indifference or being underwhelmed. I could list a whole slew of reasons I was not sold on them after seeing them live twice at AmericanaramA, but what would be the point? If they play at SS, it's fine. My wife and I will undoubtedly find something else to do in Mass during that portion of the weekend. Not a problem at all. I would just rather see someone else. Even if it's someone I've never c

Why is it surprising? Wilco has collaborated with Bob Weir and covered a fair number of Dead tunes like Friend of the Devil, Dark Star and Bird Song, yet I have seen plenty of anti-Dead sentiment on this board, too. Just because Wilco has been in somewhat close proximity with another artist, that shouldn't guarantee that everyone who loves Wilco loves that artist...should it?

I have a clock radio with a port for an iPod. My old iPod classic is on there, and I just put it on shuffle. So it's always a surprise. Some mornings, it's Royal Trux, which is not the greatest way to wake up. Other times, I wake to the voice of Uncle Frankie talking to an audience, which inevitably makes me smile.

Soldier Field apparently has a 61K capacity...that is a lot of asses in seats. I'm sure some Deadheads will travel to IL for this, but probably not that many will do it for the nosebleed seats. I love these guys, but at this point, I will have to wave goodbye from my computer, whilst listening to a 40 y.o. show.

If MMJ do end up being on the bill, I hope for the crowd's sake that they have a different sound man. They were excruciatingly loud at AmericanaramA. They had this one speaker at stage level that looked to be an entirely metallic cabinet, and that thing was just downright evil. I had to wear earplugs the whole time they played.

Seconded. I would be disappointed if they are announced. I went to two AmericanaramA shows, and I went for Wilco, Bob Weir and Dylan, not them...but got my fill of them, anyway! Not that they're bad, but for me, they were on the bottom of the feeding chain.

I suspect it will be pricey. The more people involved, the more likely the cost will rise...I think. (To cover their performance fees, travel costs, food, etc.) I never minded paying a standard ticket price for a Ratdog show, and would probably have done the same for Phil & Friends if they'd ever come to FL. But to pay the same for a nosebleed seat at a big shed? No thanks. I will console myself with a bunch of spring and summer Wilco shows, and just go on the Wilcoworld site and request some of the tunes they did with Bobby.

I haven't read any online rumors that have mentioned any of those folks except Trey from Phish. Not a fan of theirs, so my interest level has dropped from "fascinated but not willing to drop the dough" level down to somewhere below "moderately apathetic." It would be much better if people like Nels and Neal were involved, IMHO.

Aha, my bad. I saw Bruce Cockburn at Ponte Vedra. The Wilco show was St. Augustine. I'm not up that way too often, as it's about a 3-4 hour trek. I figured out how my mistake came about, though: I'm on the mailing list for St. Augustine area, either the Ponte Vedra hall or St. Augustine Amphitheatre. When they send you a list of upcoming shows, it looks like it's for one venue. Only when you click on the link for a show does it send you to the site where you can see which venue it's at....confusing!

It looks like a geezer rock festival for sure. Are you underwhelmed by both the prospect of Sir Elton and the Pete/Roger entity calling itself The Who? I have seen both in recent years and had a great time with all those old classics (and a few great obscurities), but I can see where it might not be someone's cup o' tea. Any other chance to catch Wilco this spring if you don't go the first weekend?
