  1. Besides the other testimony youve seen here, I'll tell you how it'll impact small business owners, as I deal with them profesionally (not a CPA). These companies are predominantly LLCs, LLPs & S Corps - a/k/a "pass through" entities. The income from these companies gets taxed on the business owners personal returns via schedule E. Raising "corporate taxes" doesn't do anything to these guys. Raising the top marginal rates on personal income by 1% means that, ostensibly, they'll have to pay 1% more on the amounts they make in excess of - what is it now $200k? BUT, they can also just expen
  2. (Disclaimer - I have no political affiliations, and prefer a pragmatic approach) This argument is so wretched in its age and entrenchment. This is one arm of the capitilast ideology contradicting the other. Look man, if my widget maker takes his marbles and goes home casue he is being pissy (about the 1% rate increase that he can easily sidestep via 14,000 pages of legislated loopholes), and there's a need for widgets, then someone else, either a competitor or a startup, will step in. We human beings are NOT beholden to any current crop of capital holders for our well being. The parallels be
  3. Need to get my brood (Wife, 2 year old, pet) out and about, and I'm getting tired of the annual OBX beach trip (like beaches, just tired of this one). Any very young child friendly suggestions? We're NC based.
  4. May I ask why you like it? I've seen The Visitor too, and it's a bit slow, but I liked Jenkins. TSA doesn't seem to have much to say, is very slow paced, and the ending is... dependency(?). I also don't get the need to saddle the McBride character with both dwarfism and such an anachronistic obsession to make a movie about loneliness.
  5. No, I just wanted to take a shot at possibly the worst band to happen to "rock" music in the last 10 years. Go with it. I'm still kinda diggin Albert Hammond Jr. Am I crazy, or is his solo stuff pretty underrated?
  6. I think the new record is a naked wannabe arena rock album, but even at that, the Nickelback comparison is just way outta line. Compare them to a stain of oozing, maggot infested feces if you must, but don't take it a step further and call them Nickelback. I love the EP and first two records. Because of the Times is a little underrated too.
  7. That would have happened again as Toshiba flooded the market with sub $100 HD DVD players, but Sony bought out the studios for several hundred million. Still makes me shake my head because HD DVD quality was good, and the price was right. I guess I'm the betamax guy, cause I have a Toshiba HD-A2 (HD DVD player) and about 45 HD DVD movies. I just use the formats interchangably though - i can tell the difference between HD and DVD, but its not enough to fret too much about. To be honest, I care more about HD sports broadcasts than I do HD movies, unless the visuals or scale of a flick demand it.
  8. That video is a gutpunch. Or maybe I was just distracted listening to the song. My first reaction was a contented sigh. Having a new Doves song this good felt like settling into my favorite chair with a slug of makers on ice.
  9. I've been a loyal Sirius subscriber for 5 years now. Couldn't stand the though of living without it. My other options locally are clearchannel controlled shlock. Wasnt the biggest fan of the name change for Sirius channel 26, but at least the format has stayed the same. I like the sports coverage too.
  10. Most new sets have over the air tuners, and believe it or not, if you live in a larger town, you can justs lap some rabbit ears on them and get HD local channels for free, old school style. My mom just watches the networks anyways, so I canceled her Direct TV, installed a roof antenna for her 32" Sony flat panel, and she gets 7 HD channels and 15 digital channels in the local market, for free. She loves it. The picture's actually better too, because its not compressed.
  11. I have a J.D. as well. That's why it really bothers me. It's one thing to direct operations of Federal Agencies, but for the last couple of decades that I've bothered paying attention, many of these have exceeded that function and actually created law. BTW jakob, W was every bit as guilty of this. Moreso, in fact. He's the current record holder, though I'm wondering if Obama will overtake him.
  12. I am having a difficult time understanding the legal basis for any of these executive orders, regardless of who wrote them, or whether or not I like them. Since when can a president solely author standing law?
  13. It could have been phenomenal, but it didn't really have a worthy point to make. I loved the visuals. Absolute candy. Scale of Hawtness? Annoyance?
  14. Absolutely. Kate Winslet and that Hawkins chick from the movie I've never heard of were ridiculous. Say what you want about their art, but any actor awards ceremony is an unmatched convention of the ridiculously self obsessed. It's nauseating. I'd like some male actor to win, grab the trophy, and tell all of his critics and competitors to fuck off. At least he'd be honest. Rourke was great though. That was genuine when I didn't think it existed. Ditto. Question for those who did watch it all - I missed most of a Tina Fey acceptance speech - was she really telling some internet ty
  15. The amount of board cred you must have to freely admit that is staggering.
  16. Hello, my name is Artifice, and I am an addict.
  17. Personal taste can't technically be wrong, but this begs the question. I really like LCD Soundsystem, and I love "Someone Great", but that song annoys the hell out of me. It's so monotonous.
  18. Late to the party again - good lord the title track is amazing.
  19. Reminder - Conan tomorrow (tuesday) night. Wow @ the KoL/Caleb hate. I actually like Caleb's voice. I'm close to pulling the trigger on (buying) this album.
  20. It wasn't crap when it was called Dirty Boots. Then U2 got hold of it...
  21. And Sonic Youth should muscle in and sue U2 for Vertigo.
