  1. The Pop Candy blog has a small tribute with several video clips of Big Star/Chilton, plus a few covers. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/popcandy/index
  2. And, in light of Chilton's passing:
  3. Damn, how sad. Over the past few months I've been rediscovering how wonderful the Big Star catalog is. I'm glad I got to see him a couple times. I saw him with his solo band in 1993, and saw Big Star a few years ago opening for Flaming Lips. This is terrible, completely unexpected news.
  4. Unfortunately, I didn't know it was him until afterwards. The only reason I knew it was him was because my boss had been a stagehand for Bill Graham, working primarily at Winterland, and was a big fan/pseudo-acquaintance of Taj. Me and my coworker were just psyched to see his jacket, as the RR Circus had just/finally been released. Then when we found out it was Taj Mahal we were both psyched for the rest of our shift.
  5. I'd probably pay $20 for a single LP of unreleased live tracks, but this set at this price doesn't interest me at all.
  6. Now that's cool. I served some chicken to Taj Mahal once. He was wearing a Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus jacket.
  7. One of my friends wrote Meat Loaf's signature on a piece of paper and claimed he met him backstage at the Bat Out of Hell 2, Back Into Hell tour.
  8. Is this just an excuse for Fallon to dress up as Mick Jagger, or is this for real?
  9. I played drums in a band once. When I quit, the drummer that replaced me was the bassist for Mr. Crowes Garden...the band which we now know as the Black Crowes. Jimmy Page played with the Black Crowes. So, how many degrees of separation are there between me and the Honeydrippers?
  10. Here are some photos: Eric Burdon looks more deranged than Iggy Pop. http://projects.accessatlanta.com/gallery/view/music/rock-hall-induction-2010/#thbz_hm
  11. Wait, you mean that song isn't several hours long? It feels like hours whenever I hear it. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard the whole song.
  12. That'd be fun...and I only say this as a warning and not to be a bummer, but unless Savannah has changed recently, there are a lot of folks who would be very interested in permanently removing those musical instruments from your vehicle while you're inside enjoying the concert.
  13. Yesterday I went to a 5K/10K run in which three bands were playing along the race route. The 5K started at 8 am...the equivalent of 7 am. I've heard of bands playing until 7 am (Allmams at the Fillmore), but how does a band START playing at 7 am?
  14. He's never made me laugh, but everyone seems to think he's funny.
  15. NICE! It's so rewarding to receive praise for something you've poured your heart into.
  16. The guitar sound in Money For Nothing makes it one of my favorite DS songs. I didn't have MTV in the '80s, so I never got burned out on that song.
  17. When I hear the words Dire Straits, I think: Handfull of excellent songs, albums don't hold my attention, reserve the right to discover their greatness at some point in the future.
  18. Chances are 50/50 I'll be joining you. I've been steered wrong (and right) from reading this board (and others) many times.
  19. I might have to check this out, although it's a bit troubling that every time I see their name, I think it says Barenaked Ladies.
  20. Yamaha Folk (Most Yamahas I've tried were impressive, so this, although it super cheap was the biggest disappointment) Martin X-series 000X1 (tried two of these, neither were impressive. None of the Martin's I've tried have ever worked for me, so I wasn't surprised. I'd priobaly have to go into the $2000+ range to find a Martin I like.) Epiphone Masterbuilt (not a small body, felt a lot heavier and stiffer than any acoustic I've ever played) Taylor 214 (pretty nice sound, but not even in the same universe as the old Taylor 410 I used to own, and regret parting with) I also tried a u
