  2. He's scheduled to perform with T-Bone Burnett on Sunday, so who knows what supergroup formations and cover choices might possibly ensue? Is that some British charming colloquialism that doesn't translate to these shores? Oh, if you think they look twangy, you should've heard 'em, brother! Elvis wore a rootsy outfit--the others, not so much. He mentioned it was his third visit to the Bay Area this year (once with the symphony, another with Allen Toussaint). I don't know how we got so lucky.
  3. How do you define "no-brainer"? Maybe this: a free Elvis Costello show not half a mile from my flat. Elvis held up his end of the bargain beautifully with a mix of newer songs, older but somewhat rarely played favorites, and inspired covers, in both solo acoustic treatment and with a sparkling backing band. But then he invited Emmylou Harris onstage, and they did three songs together, including "I Still Miss Someone." And then Gillian Welch and David Rawlings joined them for even more chestnuts, such as a joyously rousing "Mystery Train." For the encore, we got more of Elvis and band ("Myst

  5. It's a very odd feeling, listening to this at the beginning of October.
  6. Love that song, and many, many years later, I learned that a certain Jon Brion played piano on it. However, their cover of "How Soon Is Now" made me cringe.

  9. Based on this, I say go to Austin. In all the other categories, the two towns are pretty evenly matched, though in completely different ways (and I love both places).
  10. I think E's performance of "Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon" this past Friday at Largo was really meant for you. Happy birthday, Bridget!

    YOW

If Madison's rocking, don't bother knocking. Have a wonderful birthday, Kevin!
  14. , indeed. What was the occasion? When will the "So You Think You Can Dance" shirts be ready?
  15. Lemons --> lemonade. You can always turn it into a commemorative arm splint cover to celebrate your triumphant vanquishing of your tendon troubles. I just made a grilled cheese-tomato-avocado sandwich. Does that count?
  16. I bookmarked the Calendar page, so I noticed it looked different, but I didn't realize the changes applied to the whole site. Looking forward to the Andrew Hill disc and performance...
  17. Is there "Don't show me this option again" box for you to check? Otherwise, you might want to reinstall the program.
  18. Whew, I was afraid that Andrew was exercising his dry wit once again and was posting about this JoJo: Evonne, you have a variety of couches, futons, air mattresses, and sleeping bags to choose from while you're up here. Come visit!
  19. Not you, silly! (Never you!) I'm thinking of a string of shows at Bottom of the Hill in the early days of Britpop. Sigh. And of course the Flaming Lips Boombox Experiment circa 1998. Grr!

  21. Man, it was a weekend all right. I can't believe it's been three years. Here's to many more!
  22. There's a story in the NY Times about Chan today: 9 Lives and Counting: Cat Power Sobers Up. Rich, you'll do well whichever show you choose, but as everyone has noted, you have to leave all your expectations at the door of any Cat Power gig. Both women are mesmerizing in their own ways; it really comes down to your personal tastes.
  23. I still do that with "Until You Came Along." And as much as I love coastal living, I wish we got more Kraig Johnson face time out here. Thanks for the reports, guys.
