  1. Next time, maybe creamy Italian. But really, don't remind me about the salad dressing. Oy. I thought we really had a great group of people this year. The whole weekend always goes by so quickly and then I miss everyone, but I do cherish the time we get to spend together (and with Jeff and Susan).
  2. I will say this, I think there is a little bit more of a pop element on this record that maybe was missing from the past couple of efforts. A couple of songs are really catchy, and I mean that in a good way.
  3. I don't think I can make any particularly insightful comments about Glenn's percussion after one listen. There aren't any crazy drum solos that I remember, like on Let's Not Get Carried Away or something like that. It just sounds like Glenn (although I heard that Jeff mentioned to someone at the show, at a specific point -- I'm not sure where -- that a particular sound had come from Glenn throwing a beanbag against a wall or something). As far as the sound, knowing that one of the band's goals was to use the studio more as an instrument, I think they succeeded at that. I'm not sure if it's b
  4. If I'm remembering correctly, it's Spiders-esque. Not quite as heavy-sounding, if that makes any sense, but definitely influenced by Neu! and the like. The Krautrock lives!
  5. Hmm, that's interesting. Wonder what prompted the switch... I've generally had really good experiences with Front Gate, though, so this is good news. They'll certainly be better than MusicToday in terms of shipping physical tickets in a timely fashion, at least I hope so. Of course I'm sure I'll change my opinion on Front Gate the first time I can't get through on a pre-sale.
  6. The hamsters powering it were kinda pooped by the end of the night, though.
  7. Glad you had a good time, dude! And glad you liked the Margots. I've got a ticket to see the Brooklyn show on Thursday, I think. Lookin' forward to seeing the Cloud Cults. Any idea if they and the Margots are alternating as "headliners" on this tour (even though each band plays about an hour set)?
  8. You'll both be happy to know that Ted stayed until about 5 a.m. I'm not even kidding. As to the question about Ravi Shankar, I don't think he's actually on the record but there are certainly some Shankar-esque sounds on a couple of songs...

Glad to help, man. We should probably meet in person one of these days, if we haven't already. I'll buy you a Beard Papa or a slice something--both are right around the corner from the theater.
  10. Damn, I totally missed that! Jeff and Miles' Wii partner was named Zander, I believe.

For NYC area people, one screening that doesn't appear to be on the list yet is apparently happening on April 13 at 7 p.m. at the IFC Center (323 6th Avenue, near W. 4th). It's being billed as Movie Night with Fred Armisen and will be followed by a "discussion of the film with Armisen and directors/producers Brendan Canty and Christoph Green," according to the e-mail I got. You should be able to buy advance tickets here.
  12. Well, he did need printed lyrics for those two. But they sounded great, imho. Hard to believe they were written when he was 18 or 19! For the record, Train was also requested but he flung the lyric sheet to the ground and said he wasn't going to do that one. I also wanted to say that I loved the contributions we got from three of our fellow showgoers -- Hamilton Sims, Dave Mirabella and Martin Rivas -- who are all also really talented musicians that you should check out. Hamilton's band is called Little Beirut, Dave's is called The Rationales and Martin plays under his own name but could
  13. Jeff said the record hasn't been mastered yet. I guess I probably should have taken note of the sequence in which we heard the tracks, but I didn't because I was too preoccupied with listening. That said, here's a very cursory stab at the tracks in the order we heard them (which I'm pretty sure Jeff said was going to be the sequence): 1) Wilco the Song 2) Bull Black Nova 3) One Wing 4) You and I 5) Solitaire 6) You Never Know 7) I'll Fight (a/k/a Conscript) 8) Deeper Down 9) My Country Disappeared 10) Sunny Feeling 11) Everlasting Everything Anyway, those are definitely the songs we hear

  15. So, any reports from the Pronto gig at Martyr's?
  16. Hey Chris, that's good news. It was great to meet you the other night as well, if only briefly. Sucks that the "rafter recordings" got messed up by the cell phone interference. I would have been really interested to hear how those came out. And considering all the work that you guys put in getting stuff set up, I feel badly that it didn't work out. I used to leave my cell phone on (vibrate or silent mode, obviously) during shows, but since I started realizing how they can wreak havoc with recordings and audio stuff in general, I shut it off entirely now. I'm all for technology, but sometimes
  17. well, i mean if he's trying to take a bike ride or whatever, you would hope that people would just sort of let him be and leave him alone. i understand that people want pictures and all that, but there is probably a more appropriate time and place. just sayin'.
  18. I will say that I was a little bit surprised that at least one of the songs Jeff and Pete played together wasn't a Woody Guthrie song. Not that I didn't enjoy what they played, especially Midnight Special. And not even saying it had to be a Mermaid Avenue song, necessarily. But given the Seeger/Guthrie connection, this was the closest Jeff will probably ever come to playing with Woody so I guess it's just a little surprising to me that they didn't go that route. Hell, it could have been "This Land Is Your Land" or something and it would probably have been great. Perhaps, in the end, Jeff sim
  19. I haven't really figured out what to say about tonight's show yet, so I'm just going to post the setlist for now. I'm sure others will chime in. I think more than a few VCers were in attendance. 20. Cool, thanks for posting that! Much, much better than some of the other interviews I've seen. Out of curiosity, was that via e-mail or over the phone? Enjoy the Martyr's show tonight!
  21. Yeah, it was good to see you as well. I'm glad you said hi; I'm bad with faces (pretty good with names), so sometimes I just don't connect the dots as fast as I should. Hope you had a safe ride back and enjoyed the show!
  22. I think tonight in Northampton Jeff went on almost exactly at nine and was done a little before 11. Maybe 10:45. I'd say he does around an hour and 45 minutes. Not sure how it's going to be tomorrow night in Beacon, though. I know it's an earlier start, but I'm not sure if Pete Seeger, et al., will cut into Jeff's set time at all.
  23. Oh, and since I didn't post Pronto's setlist last night, here's what they played in NoHo: When I'm on the Rocks Say It All Night Listen Lover Unexpected Vex Biz Dev (a new song) Good Friends Have Gone All Is Golden Too bad we didn't get some more Jeff-Mike duets but I have a feeling Pronto might have had to split even before Jeff's set was over because, after all, they're playing in Chicago tomorrow night.
  24. Definitely a different vibe than Burlington, which was to be expected with a seated show. Not that there weren't *a lot* of song requests from the crowd. But anytime you get to hear Dreamer In My Dreams, especially sans PA, counts as a good show as far as I'm concerned...
