aricandover
everything was perfect. fabulous venue (probably a little bigger than my high school theater, but all new and comfy... great sound), and the band was just incredible. they are so good, i couldn't believe it. ryan's voice was gorgeous, too...wow. dear john was a highlight for me since its one of my favorites. I loved goodnight rose, too, but everything was really good, including the vaguely freestyle band intros! i've never seen ryan so self-contained (although he kept giving himself devil horns during all of the songs??). no weirdness or anything except when the band launched into a song while he was blabbing. awesome. I think the lack of a guitar, was causing him to have, "Joe Cocker Arm Syndrome" (the comedian Bob Levy also suffers from this affliction).

Chendizzle
On my first listen at least, this is exactly how I feel. The songs simply seem underwritten, though his voice sounds great. I, too, find it surprising that this is getting strong reviews and CR got mixed ones. I like that this record is concise, the songs seem a little short but not a second is wasted in any of them. Great all-around songwriting.
thisyearsgirl
I am liking all fo it except Halloween Head. Anybody ever hear the old b-side called, Hey There Mrs. Lovely? It's exactly the same song (tune) as These Girls, only the words are 90% different and a million times better.Anyway, I could PM or post a link when I get home from work for those who haven't heard it. i LOVE "hey there, mrs. lovely" lyrically, except for two lines: "we probably should have scrapped the game and gave ourselves some hugs" and"wanna dry your eyes with cinnamon and pears" i hope there's some inside meaning there that we don't get...otherwise, it sounds like filler lyrics that just never were replaced. still, love that song and love what i have heard of the new one too on his myspace page. thisyearsgirl
well, the show was fantastic. highlights for me were: "I Taught Myself How To Grow Old", "Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd", "Down in a Hole", and "Halloween Head". i'm sad that chandler and i got shut out on tickets, but i am really glad that you and alison had the chance to go and see what sounds like a great show opinion question: what is the largest venue you think he is capable of selling out in chicago? i would kill to see him at a schuba's or abbey, but i'm guessing he could easily fill the riv or the congress. (though i'm not sure of the size of the congress, i know the shins played there this spring, so i'm going by that.) i know he filled the HOB this past fall, but that's only about 1000 capacity. last summer, he played the vogue in indy (capacity around 1000) but that was the smallest venue on the tour, i was told. cusacker
yes. there's only 2-3 songs i don't love on Easy Tiger, whereas Cold Roses has 5-6 songs i don't totally love. if Cold Roses was cut to 12-13 songs, it'd easily be his best post Heartbreaker, that's for sure. cut out Meadowlake StreetBeautiful SortaCherry LaneFriendsRosebudBlossom and it'd be a killer single disc album not that big of a fan of the slower songs on Cold Roses for the most part. they're really dull/sappy songs for me. i love Ryan's solo/slow stuff, but really those ones in particular. i see where you are coming from, and many people have given me the same response about cutting the album down to one disc, but i would be very hard pressed to cut anything off the album. MS and rosebud and fantastic songs, though I would agree that beautiful sorta and blossom are some of the weaker tracks on the album. still, as much as i love easy tiger, there appears to be more 'filler' on this album than on CR, which i think flows brilliantly despite being 2 discs. to each his own though! on a side note: i hope this dvd that graboff mentioned is being released this year is all these studio videos of the cardinals performing the new material. it is driving me nuts having to go to different websites to see the different vids. i also can't wait to see ryan become part of the cardinals. i reckon that is going to lead to some incredible song-writing between ryan and neal... MattZ
I love this album more and more with every listen. He gets so much emotion out of his vocals. It's scary. I was thinking this morning on the way to work: what 3 words are all it takes to break your heart? I hate you?

Smokestack Joe
The show in chicago last night was absolutely amazing. the best vocal performance ever. ryan's voice was so strong full of emotion, he belted out on parts where in record it was a hushed vocal, he brought more life to songs like Blue Hotel, Starlite Diner, Carolina Rain, Dear John. I loved it, couldnt stop smiling. a true talent!

The venue was beyond awesome ... it was just perfect for a full band acoustic show like that. Everything sounded like on the fly, studio quality tracks. I felt very lucky to be there. That's the only line in that song that I never thought really "jived" with the rest. However, this is superb: Hey there Mrs. Lovely, Are you coming out to play?I've been standing on your doorstepEvery night and every day what 3 words are all it takes to break your heart? I hate you? Always thought it was "You Meant Everything" from that other RA song -- however, "I fucked him" sure is pretty dead on.

MattZ
I fucked him" sure is pretty dead on. I haven't dissected the song all that much, but isn't he singing it to a woman?
a.miller
I haven't dissected the song all that much, but isn't he singing it to a woman?I haven't really either. I was just referencing fan.boy from an earlier post (page 22). On my first couple listens, it just reminded me of (can't remember the title) the song where Ryan sings, "Just three words my love....You meant everything." So, I'm open for interpretation
Campaigner
I've only heard the shows from this tour, not having been there in person. But from what I can hear, Neal Casal is quickly staking his claim of Cardinals MVP, stealing the crown from Brad Pemberton. Listening to 'Dear John' from Manchester right now and he's killing it... so unbelievably good
