Analogman
The Ace album was by far the best from what I remember. I think I remember Gene's being the worst. I'm thinking you never heard Peter's solo album.
Moss
I'm thinking you never heard Peter's solo album. Really? I remember "when you wish upon a star" and "Living in sin at the holiday in (with a cameo by Cher)" on Gene's. I would remember if it was worse than that so maybe I did not hear it. I was a huge Kiss fan back then but don't remember listening to any of these other than a few spins. Even Aces.

Gene's has some great songs. You should check out Peter's - just for kicks. I think his and Paul's were my least favorite. I think Ace and Gene did the best. Also - I don't believe in the whole guilty pleasure deal.

I think Ace and Gene did the best. I might actually do that! I don't remember a single song from Peter's but according to Wiki it had an "R&B" style and was heavy on Ballads so you are probably right, it must have been really bad. I don't remember Joe Perry, Rick Nielson, Donna Summer, and Bob Seger being on Gene's but it's been 30 years. I just remember playing Gene's once and thinking "wow that sucked". He almost had Paul, George, and Ringo on it. He was with Cher at the time, so that is why she is on the album. I like these songs: "Always Near You/Nowhere to Hide" (Simmons)

I like these songs: I remembered the Cher connection. We would study those pictures of Gene and Cher when we were younger trying to see if we could catch a glimpse of what he looked like. He was damn good about getting that hand up to block the shot. Alright, I put Dylan's "Desire" on pause and I am Listening right now. Man of 1000 faces - Interesting horns and strings. I can see why my 11 year old self would not have liked it but it sounds decent enough now. Always near you - Holy cow, I don't remember Gene being able to sing that high. Mellow. Mr. Make Believe - Mellow. Have to admit they don't sound half bad. I was judging as my 10 year old self. That explains it. I was all about the heavy guitars and this album was just so mellow, especially ending on "when you wish upon a star" which actually seems kind of cool now but my 10 year old self didn't quite get it. Edit: I guess I was 10 in 1978 so that would be about right.

LouisvilleGreg
I actually would count Ace's solo album as better then any full band album that came out after 1977. There's really not a song on it that I dislike. Even to this day I listen to it all the way through. I'm surprised there's not more love for Paul's solo. Three great tracks are: "Wouldn't You Like to Know Me," It's Alright," and "Love In Chains." I've retried both the Gene and Peter albums recently and I still hate them. I would also add that Ace wrote more memorable Kiss songs than Gene overall. Gene's writing post-solo albums went way downhill whereas Ace and Paul carried those last few makeup records, and Paul wrote all of the hits in the 80's.
dondoboy
I loved "Man of 1000 Faces". I kinda wish I still had that record...I'm calling my brother. He's probably stoned, listening to it right now.
Moss
You're an old dude. You must have had that on 8-Track. Hah, you know it! Used to have to prop the damn thing up with a matchbook or butter knife or something to get it to play. Wait a minute, who you calling an old dude! I'm only 40! I loved "Man of 1000 Faces". I kinda wish I still had that record...I'm calling my brother. He's probably stoned, listening to it right now. Now that's funny. I think my brother only listens to Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett these days.
Wild Frank
This is probably not the best thing to admit as a first post but...... Marillion were, and still are, a class group. They seem to be the definition of 'uncool' for some reason. In a similar vein Genesis seem to get a lot of stick and could be viewed as a 'guilty pleasure'. However, their early albums (Trespass - Lamb) are great. G.

Winston Legthigh
Hey, there's nothing shameful about listening to the Monkees. Except realizing that on their hits, you're only listening to Mickey or Davey sing in front of a studio band...
