Harwell to pinch-hit on broadcast

Former announcer will return as guest television analyst

By Jason Beck / MLB.com

DETROIT -- Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell has a pinch-hit appearance coming up. The longtime voice of the Tigers will return to the broadcast booth as a guest television analyst on Thursday, May 24, when the Tigers take on the Angels at 1:05 p.m. ET at Comerica Park.

Harwell will join play-by-play man Mario Impemba on the FSN Detroit telecast while Rod Allen attends the high school graduation of his son, Andrew.

"It's going to be a big kick for me," the 89-year-old Harwell said. "It's just sort of fun to get my feet wet."

Harwell was a guest on radio and television last October during the Tigers' run through the playoffs. He also was behind the microphone for a spell when the All-Star Game came to Comerica Park in 2005. This will be his first full-game call on FSN Detroit since June 1, 2003, when the Tigers came back against Roger Clemens and played 17 innings in a loss to the Yankees. It remains the longest game in Comerica Park history.

Harwell broadcasted Tigers games for 42 years before retiring at the end of the 2002 season. He received the Ford C. Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.

FSN Detroit will air the game live, followed by an encore presentation that night at 7 p.m. ET.

Sweet. Ernie's the best.

"There's a foul ball down the left field line, caught by a gentleman from Owosso."

edit: I better spell the man's name correctly.

Was nice seeing Hallady getting rocked last night....wonder why they kept him in so long.

Thank God I get the NESN feed tonight. Watching the Sox on the Toronto feed was excrutiating.

"and there's the second oooot of the inning" between that and Rance Mullinicks drivel.......good thing I had beer and bongs for that crap

I got the nesn feed for the series out here in CO. Watching them play in a domed building (even with the roof open last night) takes a little something away from the game, too.

I had the Roger's Sports Net feed too. I like seeing the Canadian commercials. They have neat stuff up there.

Since they are playing the O's, I'm stuck with the MASN broadcast even though I pay for Extra Innings. Because I live south of DC. Which apparently is Baltimore.

I hate Bed Selig.

The Cardinals are blacked out here in Memphis (not that I care), and we are 5 hours from St Louis.

That was sorta cool Canadian commercials. Love to see adds for water softning pellets. I do like seeing the ads from other areas of the country especially local ads like car dealerships and stuff can be pretty funny.

Oh.

My.

God.

Jorge Julio.

Oh.

My.

God.

If I ever see him throw so much as one more pitch in a Marlins uniform I'm going to officially boycott the team. (probably not, but I might).

I've never seen a pitcher as incapable of getting outs as he is. I can't watch when he comes into the game because it makes me want to hurt somebody.
