lamradio
I keep seeing all of these posts about Ryan Adams.. It seems that he is very popular among the Wilco fan base. I'd like to get some of his stuff, what do you recommend I check out first? Thanks friends
lizish
Heartbreaker and the Whiskeytown stuff - especially Stranger's Almanac. Pretty well everything else has a less successful good song to filler ratio.

deepseacatfish
Heartbreaker is definitely the best Ryan Adams release. I would recommend getting "Heartbreaker" and Whiskeytown's "Stranger's Almanac" for starters. Then I'd say either Gold, Cold Roses, or Easy Tiger, and then fill in the gaps. I really like a lot of "Demolition" which is a collection of songs from a bunch of sessions he recorded, that might also give you a sense of the different styles he likes to work in. He has a big catalog between his own stuff and Whiskeytown material...but a lot of it is definitely worth owning.

lamradio
Excellent.. Thanks for the replies so far. I love how your recommendations vary.. That's a good sign.. It usually means that I could be making a wise decision getting into Ryan Adams.
WilcoFan
Heartbreaker and the Whiskeytown stuff - especially Stranger's Almanac. Pretty well everything else has a less successful good song to filler ratio. Perfectly put.
phish907
Perfectly put. Amen, any RA discussion has to start with Faithless Street, it is really hard to touch that one!!!!!!!!
yermom
Heartbreaker
a.miller
Heartbreaker (his first solo album), Strangers Almanac, Cold Roses.....and Gold, despite what others say FYI -- since it seems you're new to him, Whiskeytown is his old band. This group is responsible for Strangers Almanac. There are also some really good songs on the other (2 official??) Whiskeytown albums, but I don't think those albums are on par with Strangers Almanac as a complete product.

Analogman
I like Heartbreaker the least.
Killer Whales
Besides Heartbreaker (undoubtedly his best), Love is Hell is my favorite Ryan Adams album, so don't ignore that one either. Cold Roses and Stranger's Almanac are great as well. I find Gold to be really overrated and uneven, but as with all RA albums, theres some amazing tracks on it
jimmyjimmy
I like Heartbreaker the least. Besides Heartbreaker (undoubtedly his best) Poll!
lizish
Poll! you should include Sweetheart of the Rodeo and GP I guess since it's all just the same
keylime
I like Heartbreaker the least. I agree with you. I never really got into it like I did with his other albums. It's difficult to pick a favourite, but I think I'm going to go with Love is Hell.
Analogman
It did Bloodshot a lot of business though - I just prefer the more recent releases. I don't think GP actually wrote all that many songs - not by himself anyhow.
Lammycat
I don't think GP actually wrote all that many songs - not by himself anyhow.I've read articles where it's been disputed that he wrote "Hickory Wind," probably his most popular tune.
Beltmann
It's minority opinion, but my favorite is Cold Roses.

brianjeremy
I would go in this order: Heartbreaker > Pneumonia > Cold Roses > Demolition > Rock n Roll > Stranger's Almanac > Easy Tiger > Gold > JCN > Faithless Streets > Love is Hell > Rural Free Delivery >
