I don't really feel that way - I don't know who he is. I miss baseball and wanted to post in this thread.

MattZ
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/20...s-santana_N.htm The New York Mets have agreed to a trade for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, giving up four prospects to acquire the left-handed ace of the Minnesota Twins, according to two high-ranking Twins officials with knowledge of the talks and a person close to Santana. The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension. The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey. The deal would give the Mets the much-needed ace at the front of their rotation. Santana won the American League Cy Young Award in 2004 and 2006 and is 93-44 lifetime. He went 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA for the Twins last season. Santana has struck out at least 235 batters each of the past four seasons. While the deal drains much of the talent out of the Mets' farm system, they did manage to hold on to top prospect Fernando Martinez, an outfielder. Instead, they headed the package with Gomez, who turned 22 in December and spent 58 games with the Mets last year.
Mr. Kinsley
I'm just glad that our long national nightmare of not knowing where Santana goes is over. NOW can we have pitchers and catchers report?!?!

Duck-Billed Catechist
So, I ran some numbers earlier today and Santana has a 1.96 career ERA vs. NL teams in 142 IP.

Lammycat
I'm just glad that if BOS wasn't going to get him that the NYY (or another AL East team, for that matter) didn't get him. Confirmed on SI: (nothing really new, per se)http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/base...aded/index.html
bjorn_skurj
yay! Ibid. The Mets needed this to produce enthusiasm for 2008.

Twisted Acres
So, I ran some numbers earlier today and bobbob is about 18 minutes away from posting about why this is horrible trade for the Mets. I'm even more stoked at the fact that they didn't have to part with both Gomez and Martinez. How this could possibly be bad for the Mets is beyond me, other than the idea of giving a 6- or 7-year contract to a pitcher... but this is not just any pitcher.
Serak_the_Preparer
Any other Twins fans out there wondering why the hell we would trade for these guys instead of Phil Hughs or Jacoby Elsburry? I am at a loss for words after this trade. We could have had either a bonifide star centerfielder or a TOP pitching prospect that would most likely be #1 or #2 starter this year. Instead we get a undisiplined hitter of an outfielder, a good pitching prospect who is not ready for the bigs yet and 2 mid-level pitching prospects. Unbelievable.
Serak_the_Preparer
Out of the 3 pitching prospects, only one has a winning record in the minors. Kevin Mulvey is 12-10 in his minor league career. The other 2 pitchers combine for a minor league record of 27-33. Phil Humber is 0-0 in the majors with a 6.00 ERA in 5 games. Carlos Gomez strikes out 1 in 5 ABs and has a minor league avg. of .278. Ellsburry had a minor league avg. of .313 snd only struck out roughly 1 in 9 ABs. He hit .353 in the majors and played a roll in the world series win. Boston would have also thrown in some top pitching prospects. Why didn't we trade with Boston again? Or for Hughes (25-8 in the minors)?? Piss me off

Lammycat
Because the Yanks and Sox did not want to give up those players? But they did offer these players in different packages. I'm a little surprised that they (The Twins) settled for what they did when they seemingly could have gotten better deals.
MattZ
The twins were always going to prefer a lesser trade with the mets because they dont want to face Santana 10x every year and in a short series in the playoffs. If the Yanks and Sox didnt get into a bidding war, the NL was the obvious landing spot. And the mets were the obvious buyer in the NL.* * 20/20 hindsight

Lammycat
The Mets received the Twins' #'s 2, 3, 4 and 7 top ten prospects. Not too shabby. The Mets needed this deal more than the NYY or BOS, too. A huge boost for them, obviously. Still, would've been nice to have him wearing red socks this year. I think the Twins may have overplayed their hand a bit.Exactly.
JerseyMike
This is the a horrible trade for the Twins. Carlos Gomez isn't really that great of a prospect and the Mets couldn't get anybody to bite on Humber last year. He has a losing record in the minors and he's already 25. The funny thing about it: the Mets still suck. Sketchy rotation, no bullpen, no corner outfielders, no proven catcher, Delgado coming off of a bad season, a supposed Super-star SS who dissapeared down the stretch and a second baseman who talents are fading at best. I predict Santana on the 60-day DL by early, July

Lammycat
I think the deal clearly makes the Mets the team to beat in (not necessarily the NL but certainly) the NL East.
bobbob1313
So, I ran some numbers earlier today and bobbob is about 18 minutes away from posting about why this is horrible trade for the Mets. I love Santana, this is a great trade for the Mets. Gomez and Humber aren't very good, I wouldn't have done Dontrelle for the two of them. I'm surprised they didn't have to give up Martinez or Pelfrey, who I think are better prospects. The part of this deal that isn't good for the Mets is the one that will pay Santana anywhere from 25-30 million dollars at the age of 34. And it's also slightly (not much, but slightly) troubling that his HR and BB rates went up last year while his K rate went down last season. He's still the best or 2nd best pitcher in the league. But if he falls off even a little bit (which is entirely probable), it'll be a terrible contract. And I'm rooting hard for that to happen.
tongue-tied lightning
they say Mulvey is the real deal, but who knows when, or if. great deal Omar
