Iowa's got nothing (except Slipknot) but I like a band from Des Moines called The Nadas the best....

Greg Brown and his daughter Pieta Brown. Greg's married to Iris Dement, too.

David Zollo

The above may not be household names, but Greg Brown's been around for awhile and is well known and respected on the Folk circuit.

Zollo is a fantastic 30-something musician that also runs a record label in Iowa (Brown's on it).

Tommy Bolin is from Iowa, as well.

AZ also has Soulfly and North Side Kings, but I doubt you like them. Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers are pretty good however.

I saw the Iowa Beef Experience at Gabe's in Iowa City ... nearly twenty years ago? They weren't too bad.

They opened for Killdozer.

The Sidewinders (a.k.a. The Sand Rubies) were from Arizona. I loved those guys.

Also, two offshoots from that earlier band: Rich Hopkins & Luminarios, and Maryanne.

Lots of country artists from here, for better or worse. Carrie, Garth, Reba, Vince, Toby, Cross Canadian Ragweed, etc.

But I lean more toward Flaming Lips, Aqueduct and Woody Guthrie.

Flaming Lips

J.J. Cale

Leon Russell

Woody Guthrie

Cross Canadian Ragweed

Red Dirt Rangers

Jason Boland & The Stragglers

Bob Childers

Travis Linville

Bob Wills (from TX but made Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa his home for many years)

Alright! CO Bands... a short list as I'm better at naming Chicago bands.

John Denver

String Cheese Incident

Yonder Mountain String Band

Hot Rise

Townes Van Zandt has a lot of history in my local area.

Opie Gone Bad

Leftover Salmon

If anyone else knows any Colorado bands I'd love to hear them... I'm not that knowledgeable except about Bluegrass, which I don't wanna talk about all day.

Also chicago people, you're forgetting Earth, Wind, and Fire.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been based in CO since 2-3 years into their inception (over 40 years ago).

Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) is from Boulder.

Rose Hill Drive is from Boulder.

Tony Furtado cut his nut in the Boulder area.

Big Head Todd & the Monsters are from Boulder.

Jerry Joseph got his start in Boulder with the excellent band Little Women. He now fronts another excellent band, Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons.

Drag the River is from Fort Collins

Hot Rize still plays, but Pete Wernick is a master on his own with his band, too (Pete Wernick's Live Five w/ wife Joan). He's a Bronx native but has lived out here since the 70s.

ed. There are a lot of bands/musicians with ties to CO that lived/live (and often recorded) here for stints, though. Like: Joe Walsh, Steven Stills, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, Tommy Bolin, Willie Nelson.

Skid Row - Music Group (Toms River)

Is that for real? Tom's River is like the middle of nowhere. Craziness. That actually reminds me that Twisted Sister is from Jersey, they played their first gig in Cookstown, which is also the middle of nowhere.

Umm, I wouldn't call the County Seat of Ocean County and the huge town right off the Parkway that every thousands upon thousands of NYers have to drive through to get the Shore (Seaside Heights) in the middle of nowhere. Crappy town, yes...middle of nowhere, not so much.

Glad someone mentioned Dramarama in the Jersey group. They were a great 80s Jersey band (even though people might think of Cali cuz they moved out there to make it big...ha), and I still listen to alot of their old shit. Actually my friend told me last night at the Tower show that they played on Ellen's show recently (apparently she's a huge fan). Reminds when I saw Dino Jr and The Lemonheads both perform on Jenny Jones and I almost passed out.
