Record Store Day April 19

Recommended Posts

I am one of the luckiest people in the whole world to work at one of the best record stores in Chicago and make somewhat of a living at it. For some reason or another that may or may not involve Metallica, the country is celebrating something called Record Store Day this Saturday, April 19. Super cool independent record stores all across the country will be selling special vinyl releases, giving away stuff and just feeling generally happy to still be around. In the five years I've worked at Laurie's Planet of Sound I have been happy to see sales increasing every year! We're selling more vinyl than ever and contrary to popular belief, people ARE buying CDs. We'll be giving away a free tote bag if you buy more than $10 worth of vinyl, and Jon Langford will be hanging out to shoot the shit about music etc. with everyone. If you live in Chicago, come by and visit! If you don't like our store, go by somewhere else that's great: Reckless Records, Permanant Record, K. Starke, Hard Boiled, Groovin' High, Val's Halla, Dave's Records, I'm sure I'm missing someone. If you're not in Chicago and you know of a great store near you, go check them out this Saturday. Chances are they'll have something cool going on, and they'd love to see you. :dj

That's fantastic! I'd LOVE to do this but I'm equidistant from Seymour and Chicago - 2+ hours. Shame that the Indy area isn't on the list of participating stores. :ohwell

I am celebrating record store day at one of the best record stores I ever been to Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ! The place is massive! I am attending a Nada Surf instore that day! I might have to pick up some vinyl too that day to celebrate!

Here is a story in the New York Times about record stores trying to survive!

We're going to the Bottle Rockets in-store at Euclid. Can't wait! I haven't seen them in ages. My four-year-old loves them, and this will be her first "show". She's so excited. P Dub, if you see a haggered mom with an over-excited blonde girl singing "Radar Gun" at the top of her lungs, come say hello.

Hadn't heard about the New Pornos at VV. I might have to ditch the rest of my family and head that way, too.

Sam, wish I'd had a chance to visit you at Laurie's when I was in town!

That was fun.....bought some CDs and LPs and chatted a bit. Lauries was mobbed, but then Lincoln Square is like Wicker Park North now, so the streets in general are packed. Let's see, got the new Justin Earle (new), Levon Helm, Buddy Guy, Songs: Ohia, Gary Louis (all used) and then on LP, Ella Fitzgerald, Dillard, Hartford, Dillard, and free Columbia/Epic with music from the labels....

....Putting aside the issue of whether or not LPs sound better than CDs, it appeared that the record companies are courting the LP crowd, since most people who buy LPs also buy CDs and tend to buy music in general. So even the majors jumped on this to publicize theirproduct, as well as the indie labels of course. It looked like the majors pressed up a bunch of 45s as one time only copies. This is pretty funny since 45s used to be the everyone's bread and butter.

Okay...time to put something on the box...

We had a great time at Euclid in St. Louis! I bought the new Breeders single on vinyl. CDs purchased were "Velocity of Sound" by Apples in Stereo, "Draw Breath" by The Nels Cline Singers, and "Zoysia" by the Bottle Rockets, which I somehow neglected to get when it was released two years ago.

Speaking of which, their in-store performance was a lot of fun. I was amazed by how much of th audience consisted of other parents who, like me, were bringing their kids out for their first live music experiences. I talked to Brian Henneman, the lead singer, before their performance about the proliferation of second-generation Bottle Rockets fans. They took a lot of requests from the little ones, who made quite a pit in front of the stage.

He poked some fun at Jeff Tweedy before playing "I'll Be Coming Around". There's a little two-note riff in the song that Jeff added/suggested while they were recording. As Brian put it, "This was when he was Jeff Tweedy, not JEFF TWEEDY. I can't afford to pay him for two-note riffs anymore."

Evidence that the band and its followers have caused themselves much brain damage over the years: he forgot the second verse of "Thousand Dollar Car" and no one in the crowd could remember it. I'd just listened to the song on the way to the store and couldn't conjure it up. Someone finally looked it up online.

It was really great to see such an awesome record store jam-packed with people who love music. I think this might be my new favorite holiday. And I haven't even gone through my big bag of freebies!

I am stuck in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on the way to Minneapolis. The fucking car broke down, so instead of staying in our really nice hotel room in downtown Minne, we are staying in a Super 8.

So needless to say I missed Record Store Day at Electric Fetus. Hopefully things go a little smoother tomorrow.

But, I did hear "Impossible Germany" while we were sitting in Perkins trying to find a rental car. That was alright.

The B-Rox were a great way to wake up on a Saturday morning! I'm sorry I didn't see your earlier post until tonight. I was standing about 5 yards in front of the stage by the mic stand. The number of toddlers there was crazy but cool! The sound was really good and the tape sounds great! I'm still looking for the tape from their Thanksgiving weekend show at Off Broadway, it's around here somewhere. I just remembered that I caught them opening for Lucinda a few years ago...I need to look for that too! Unfortunately I won't be able to make their Anniversary show at Blueberry Hill in two weeks, though I have a good excuse since I'll still be in New Orleans during the second weekend of Jazz Fest. Would you like a copy of the show?
