Wilco Worshipper
Why do you come to VC regularly? To get the latest on Wilco, world/local news (I can't tell you how many times I've said "Yea, I know. There was a link on VC." and check in on the peeps. What do you get out of coming here? Some laughs, news, interesting tidbits and friends. How did you get into VC? I actually 1st found it in 2001 but only hung out here for a very short time. Then I re-discovered it the night SBS came out. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? I love Wilco and everything they are associated with. They've never recorded anything I don't love. (ditto) How would you define being a Wilco fan? I think it's different for everyone. I don't think I can truly express in words what this band and moreso Jeff has done for me. Being into Wilco obviously fits the bill. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? My interest in Wilco has not waned nor do I EVER expect it to. I can't imagine my musical world without them. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)? I go to Facebook and Myspace daily but don't do a whole lot on either one. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? Yes, I'm met and /or talk to a few quite regularly and continue to build relationships with them. Some would include Walken, Mr. TonyMargheritatime, RaspberryJam and jimthedrummer. Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends? Indeed! There's many...llynn, Pocahantas, MB, PAMT, Basil II, sunkentreasure, Gym Teacher Man and many more. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? Wilco Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack? The fact that I'm home basically four days a week and now well, it looks like almost EVERY day of the week...*sigh* And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit? I only am not here if I'm away on vacation. And it HURTS...reeeeeeeeeeeaal BAD!!!
mfwahl
Great thread, Speed. I love reading the responses.
yermom
Michael Stipe is SO much hooooottteerrr!!!?!???!?!?!?"Oh man, that almost made me barf. Why do you come to VC regularly?Habit What do you get out of coming here?Wilco updates, movie/book/music recommendations, and vibes/support from the nice folks. Plus, I think you're all pretty easy and if I ever needed to get laid, I could probably find tail. How did you get into VC?I found the key under the doormat. (Google, then a habit developed.) Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?Yeah, but I confess I've been slacking on the listening lately. Wilco was my musical crutch through my brothers death, I think my connection to the music springs from that and I find myself needing crutches less lately. How would you define being a Wilco fan?I listen to/enjoy Wilco and try to catch a show whenever I can which is nowhere near often enough. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?Habit and I'm afraid something major could go down and I'd miss it! Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?Just the social networking stuff. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? In a way, I guess? Once you get to know enough about people, it's hard not to care for them and worry for them when something is going wrong, etc. Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?Same as above. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?I've never really gotten into other internet communities too much...there are a few, but I don't jive there like I do here. I stick around because I actually find some insightful commentary here and feel like I can actually contribute to the conversation some times. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?Shit tons of spare time, and a fierce internet addiction (drug of choice being music listening, downloading, researching, etc.) And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?I'm usually around. If I'm not, it's because "real life" is happening...which I guess is a good thing.
Three dollars and 63 cents
Why do you come to VC regularly? To talk about Wilco, other music, beer, books, and all of the other random things we end up talking about here What do you get out of coming here?I get great recommendations for books, music, and beer (my three favorite things). Most of my friends think I'm nuts for traveling so much to see Wilco and Nels, so it's good to come here and talk about going to shows and new projects and things like that. I also like to keep in touch with my friends here. How did you get into VC?I joined in the summer of '06 because I was looking for a recording of the first show I attended. I lurked for a long time, though. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?Yep. I'm also our resident Nelshead How would you define being a Wilco fan?Simply, liking Wilco. There are people here who are more hardcore than others, or who are hardcore in ways that others aren't, but we all basically came here for the same reason: Wilco, in some way and at some time, makes or has made us happy. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? My interest in Wilco hasn't really waned. Sometimes I listen to them a lot, sometimes I listen to other bands a lot, but there's always other things to talk about here. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?I've been a member of Interference (the U2 board) since early 2005 and post pretty regularly there, too, though I spend more time here these days. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?Yes. I met a bunch of VCers while traveling last summer, and I've stayed in touch with a lot of them. Whether it was hotel or restaurant suggestions, conversations in line or at shows, beers, meals, or anything else, so many VCers helped me out. I've had so many awesome people come into my life over the last year who I never would've met if it weren't for this band. Wilco people are good people Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?Yes. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?I lurked here for a long time, but I started posting regularly last year, when I started going to a lot more shows. Now that I know a lot of people here, I come on here to catch up with them as much as I do to check set lists and talk about Wilco. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?I'm sort of shy, to the point that I come across as standoffish sometimes (right Kim? ), but online I tend to be myself more easily sometimes. Also, since I teach writing and am a writer, writing comes pretty naturally to me, so posting doesn't take much brainpower. And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?I'm here pretty regularly, except when I'm super busy with work or am traveling. uncool2pillow
Why do you come to VC regularly?I like to see what's going on in this little corner of the WWW. Music, politics, sports, beer, good times... What do you get out of coming here?Lots of laughs. Good info on music, movies, books. How did you get into VC?I first discovered it after a 2003 Wilco show. I think I joined after my 2nd Wilco show, but started posting regularly about a year ago after the residency. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?I think they're all pretty damn good. How would you define being a Wilco fan?One who is fanatic about the music of Wilco. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?n/a Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?FB, but probably 50/50 between here and there. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? No, as Hollinger. mentioned, we've met. But other than that, haven't met any others. A few PMs w/ others. There are many people I respect, admire, or appreciate their posts, but not friends. Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?Same as above. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? So much common interest beyond Wilco. As a sometimes conservative, I have enjoyed expressing my point of view around a mostly liberal community and get mostly thoughtful replies in return. I grew up as a conservative surrounded by punk rockers, so I've always liked playing devil's advocate. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack? High bandwidth, at ease w/ computers. And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?I used to keep up on VC at my job (teacher at a public school) until they got new filtering software. poppydawn
Why do you come to VC regularly?Partially out of habit. Mostly for the kicks and hijinx. It's a good source of music news, too. But the hijinx ... that's the biggie. What do you get out of coming here?Entertainment How did you get into VC?After a show in 2007 I was looking for a download of the show. I think I first heard of VC from an article in Paste a few years earlier, and I'd occasionally checked in for album and tour news. After that '07 show, I got sucked into the discussion about the show and haven't left the vortex since. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?Oh yeah. Fan from the beginning. How would you define being a Wilco fan?I don't like to define other people. Fandom's self-defining. Or something. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?I'm on a wee little bored with some friends, and I check out the Bottle Rockets board quite a bit. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?Yep. I met some of my dearest friends from VC. Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?A few. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?Primarily the music stuff, but I also like the blend of personalities, people, and topics. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?I've been a fan of internet communities for a long time. I'm really social and outgoing. Being a stay at home mom and freelance writer, it can be difficult to get as much grown-up interaction as I'd like. Internet communities are a good outlet for pent-up extrovert energy.

mpolak21
I came upon the board in the winter of 2005, I was searching for information about the Bill Fay song Be Not So Fearful, which Tweedy and the Band had covered many times. And right around that time I had downloaded some live shows and the YHF demos from this site called "The Grotto" and slowly and surely I got hooked into them, and I started posting a few months after that, I wanted to get a copy of the 9/19 and 9/20 2003 shows because of the Wilco Book, and Speed Racer sent me a PM within about an hour of my post and a week later I had those shows. Trading was my biggest interest, and then I found I really enjoyed the conversations about the band and then about other music as well. And just every couple of months something would happen that would get me in a little bit more, I started talking to posters through PMs, and got to know some people pretty well and I just jumped in. I always have appreciated dropping by anytime I'm stressed out or blocked up when I'm writing and just worrying about trivial things like whether or not Jay Bennett should come back into the fold or whether YHF or AGIB is better. So I generally stay on the music side and away from the political and some of the more personal threads as I mainly come on here to not think about those things, but I certainly have posted stuff of a personal nature here and there in the past. I really like a great deal of the people on here and there are posters that I just love reading. That's kind of it in a scatterbrained nutshell. --Mike
a.miller
Why do you come to VC regularly?Good advice on many, many things. What do you get out of coming here?I find a welcoming community that has wonderful taste for many cool things that I may or may not already know of / about. How did you get into VC?I can't remember. I'm sure it was Wilco-related -- likely a google search of some kind. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? At the top of the list, I would never be here without Wilco. They are a great band, and even if I don't like what they do (from here forward), they have already given sooo much awesome music. I will always be a Wilco fan. How would you define being a Wilco fan? Someone who enjoys the band's music. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? As a band, Wilco, and their fans still "get it" in my eyes. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)? Many, many "technical" music forums / guitar forums. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? Yes, but have met very few in real life Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends? There are a few people, which I feel if we met in real life, would be instant good friends. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? The Wilco. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack? The ability to express their feelings / ideas / thoughts through the written language -- seriously some people have no idea. And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit? Daily. Couple times.
ction
Why do I come here? Honestly? Two words... turtle porn.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
Why do you come to VC regularly? Good way to kill time. What do you get out of coming here? Intelligent (for the most part) discussions about music and other sundry itemd How did you get into VC? I'll be damned if I can remember...but I seem to remember coming here after having been on the message boards for a time on the Wilco site. I may have run across a link at a usenet site. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? Next question How would you define being a Wilco fan? Enjoying the music and being absolutely thrilled if you run into someone who is also a fan If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? I don't think my interest will wane for a long time. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)? I used to spend a lot of time on the AOL Springsteen, Babylon 5 and Alt Country/No Depression boards. When I ditched AOL, I spent a lot of time on the Usenet boards for Springsteen. But the noise to signal ratio there is way out of wack. Now I kick around here and also read the World of Warcraft forums. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends? I will come clean here and pull back the curtain a bit on myself. While not being socially awkward or inept, I do not have many friends. My family (Downtown, Magic and D-man) are my primary concerns. I used to think I have Asperger's syndrome, but after some lengthy profiling and analysis, I simply determined that being raised by wolves leads to some interesting attachment issues later on in life. I will be honest and say I have no desire to meet any of you, as I would find that really awkward and more than a little frightening. E-relationships are fine and dandy, but I prefer you guys as 1's and 0's as opposed to smiling people who may want to get to know me. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? The talk ranging from Wilco to Springsteen to Lost...A-man's bit torrent information. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack? LOL...besides being a sociopath? Well, not really sociopathic...never killed anybody and never tortured cats.
Sir Stewart
Why do you come to VC regularly? Apart from laughs - news, mostly. Sounds ridiculous even writing it, but this place has an uncanny ability to report on the stuff I'm interested in, across the board. What do you get out of coming here? A sense that I've wasted time. Community. How did you get into VC? Joined to find people who may have remembered a dead friend of mine (dude who got me into Wilco). Never made a connection in 5 years, until last summer. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? I like all their albums. How would you define being a Wilco fan? "Someone who enjoys Wilco's music. That was an easy one." - Hollinger. If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? My interest in the band has not waned, but I do spend about 1% of my time here discussing Wilco. So my answer is the same as to the first question. Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)? Nope. Facebook, sort of. Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? Hell yeah. Although, I recall being more than a little weirded out the first time a VCer was in town and wanted to meet up (Ficky) and the first time a VCer mailed me something (A Million Little Pieces, peel). You can imagine what I was thinking when I got a wedding invitation around that time, too. Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends? Hell yeah. What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? Teh funny. Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack? What am I, a doctor? And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit? I'm here less lately because I've been unemployed and wasting time here has felt more like a timesuck than when someone's paying me.
jenbobblehead
i showed up on the VC in the late winter of 04 at the advice of a co-worker, one DefRo, to sell some extra tix i had to the DeKalb shows.I stayed for the dating possibilities.
bobbob1313
I joined when I was like 14, or something. I was annoying. Then I stopped being annoying for like 2 weeks in the summer of 2006. I am back to being annoying. But really, I consider many people on this board to be my friends, even though I feel I've drifted from a lot of them recently. It's sad. I like this place, but I can be too argumentative, and I know a lot of people aren't too fond of me anymore. Oh well.
