Exceptional Wilco / Tweedy Performances

Recommended Posts

Looking to pull some of the shows at owl / bear. Any recommendations on spectacular / exceptional performances?

So far, the following have blown me away more so than some other shows:

2004-10-30

2004-11-13

2005-04-25

2005-03-05

2005-06-28

2008-03-09

2008-05-15

2009-10-09

2009-11-11

I was a deadhead for many years (kind of like being catholic or an alcoholic - you'll always be a deadhead) and noted that while every show was special, there were some shows that were quite special or exceptional....

That was a great show. The recording is so-so due to the chatter, the bar noise and the fact that the mics had to be back by the board. But "You're Really Gone" is a pre-cursor to "Hate It Here", which was really cool to hear it evolve from that to the song.

Yes. And the one listed as "? - new song" is a early acoustic version of "Panthers". Very cool.

The recording is so-so. It seems mike was placed next to cash register, tip jar or something.

I really love the early shows from the lounge ax, something really special about those. Great banter and some might think I'm weird but I love the sounds of the beer bottles clanking in the background. Those shows were really something. Wish I coulda been there.

There was usually a garbage can right by the sound board.

Just another old Deadhead looking for a fix.

Me too!

Go back in time and check out some of the earlier shows. 1997 was a fine year for Wilco. Also 2001/2002.

10/21/99 is one of my favorite Tweedy shows.

check the download sites (etree,dimeadozen,etc...) . over the past couple years there have been a lot of new early wilco sbd's put online/uploaded (most from 1999, 2000, & 2001). if not still being "seeded" - they probably can be found on Owl & Bear ( :worship )- if not now - in the near future.

Guest Jules

11/2/02 & 11/03/02. Two of the rockingest Wilco shows I have ever attended, and both are up on owl / bear. Get 11/2 for the sound quality and 11/3 for the performance.

Any way to combine those?

I've seen Wilco about 5 or 6 times now, with another show coming up next month - however, I think this 39-song marathon takes the cake as the best of the lot:

Getting in the way back machine the 3/12/2001 Jeff Tweedy solo show at the old Guthrie in Minneapolis.

Remarkable for a couple of things

1) The stage was set up for some play, where it looked like the entry way to a large house, with the front door directly behind Jeff. It made it feel as though you were in his house listening to him play. Also the guitar tech would walk around to the door and ring the door bell every time he would bring Jeff a guitar.

2) Great Tweedy banter, reference to things being cock.

3) Guest appearance by Gary Louris, and the best live version of Radio King I have ever heard.

Set List Here

I bet the doorbell was broke by the end of the show. :lol Though I am not sure if switched his guitars as much back then as he does now.

Absolutely agree. I've said it before, probably somewhere here in VC, that in almost 40 years of seeing live music this is a top 5 show for me.

great thread, wish there were more like this....

.....my favorite "mellow" show (i mention it often) was 6/8/04 irving plaza, nyc....not sure where my source was from, but the sound is exquisite

a great acoustic double dip were 3/4/05, 3/5/05 tweedy shows at the vic....the banter, the variety, the encores w/ band....kawasaki benefit

soooo, who's the brave soul that's gonna revive wilcobase????

(if i ever quit my job & take off to the mountains, i'll give it a shot)
