lost highway
This country was created based on the idea of free enterprise not collectivism. We are now a socialist country following the same path of destruction followed by the USSR, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and all the other failed collectivist and statist countries of Europe. But collectivism, and a socialist/capitalist hybrid are what has made Germany a great country for the past several decades. They squashed communism, but retained the social services that have stabilized their country. I would say the Belgians are overtaxed, but they still are more stable than Italy and Greece. That hybrid has brought our nation a highway system, the post office, the national parks and countless other things. The same spirit on a local level is responsible for triumphs like the NYC subways system. A world without taxes and public programs sounds good if you're out in a field growing corn, but not when you live in a metropolitan area. Ironically the field of corn is government subsidized as well. The "almost-no-tax" analogy has as its models Switzerland, South Korea and Mexico. Obviously Switzerland and South Korea have very different conditions than our nation (not to mention Switzerland is the kind of bank monster that libertarians are terrified of). I don't think many tax haters would advocate modeling our government after Mexico. You can call our country socialist, and I would argue their are elements of that common sense that have helped it succeed, but nonetheless we still have lower taxes than almost every other first world country. The only people I see wetting the bed about the very rich stepping up another couple percent are..... the very rich. Another 4 years of Obama and some folks might have to hold out on that second yacht for another year.

ih8music
Yes, because it's a well-known fact that every single person with a college degree is a raving socialist liberal. (BTW, ol' Ricky holds an MBA and law degree & is sending his own kids off to Obama's institute for liberal brainwashing.) Really, this guy is just absurdly stupid and/or disingenuous. Part of me DREAMS that he gets the GOP nomination because surely there's no way in hell he could win a national election... but the other, bigger, part of me doesn't even want to risk it. This is still the same country that elected GWB twice, after all.

Shakespeare In The Alley
it blows my mind that santorum isn't actually joking when he says things i can believe that there are people as stupid as he is out there, but that there are this many people stupid enough to vote for him just amazes me. rareair
didnt tennessee vote for corker over ford or was that kentucky? i found that IMPOSSIBLE to believe. it was like a 3 year old vs a real statesman corker is ok. ford as a real statesman is a stretch. a real lobbyist. or a real smooth talker. or really corrupt. those may fit better. you should maybe google the ford family's political history before committing to that statement going forward. LouieB
Spoiler alert - Barack Obama will be elected President in 2012. (I like the Louvins too....looking forward to reading Charlie's autobiography someday soon.) Also both Colbert and Stewart ran the back to back clips of Santorum dissing Obama for saying all kids should go to college and then Barack saying that all kids should have some sort of post-secondary training, community college, apprenticeship, or college. What a complete idiot Santorum is. LouieB
Winston Legthigh
Romney is such a boob. He's pissed at Santorum for robocalling Dems to vote for himself. But Romney used to vote in open primarys for the weakest Dem candidate. ABC News’ Jonathan Greenberger Reports: Republican presidential candididate Mitt Romney offered a new explanation today for why he supported a Democrat in 1992.That year, Romney, then a registered independent, voted for former Sen. Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary. He told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, in an interview that will air Sunday on "This Week," that his vote was meant as a tactical maneuver aimed at finding the weakest opponent for incumbent President George H.W. Bush."In Massachusetts, if you register as an independent, you can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary," said Romney, who until he made an unsuccessful run for Senate in 1994 had spent his adult life as a registered independent. "When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I’d vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for the Republican." http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/02/romney-also-said-he-voted-in-dem-primaries-to-influence-115774.html
ih8music
This place... doesn't seem to have anyone willing to defend Santorum, which may or may not be unfortunate. All I want to know is what happened to "West" - the user who started this thread last year, posted here 11 times in 5 days... and hasn't posted since. A few drive-by "I hope Wilco supports Ron Paul / Obama is a failed president" posts and then nothing else? Hmmm... well, at least Sparky was here to carry that torch, so to speak. Guest Jules
Spoiler alert - Barack Obama will be elected President in 2012. For the record, you said the same thing about Hilary back in '08. If Santorum wins the nomination, I will have a hard time voting for him. I might have to abstain.
LouieB
For the record, you said the same thing about Hilary back in '08.I don't believe this is true, but not going to argue about it. Since I was always supporting Barack back in those days I have no idea why I would have said that. Link?? Feel free to vote for Santorum, one of the most hateful retro candidates ever. calvino
Nice word choice, Jules - we all will have to abstain from lots of things if he gets elected. Santorum's rhetoric has been picking up steam; I am glad he is giving Romney a run for his money, though.

I don't think he's going to be the candidate anyway.
KevinG
Can someone explain what is appealing about Santorum? The last few bits I have heard from him, make him sound very hateful, bigoted, and ignorant. Also if the economy is so bad why are the opposition party so focused on social issues all of sudden. If any candidate runs on social issues against Obama, they are gonna lose. Economic they have a fighting chance?
