I'll do my top 3 since I haven't checked out much this year:

1. Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo

2. Drive-By Truckers - Go-Go Boots

3. P.J. Harvey - Let England Shake

Ha! Those could easily wind up on my top disappointments list. Along with Fleet Foxes.

I think I only have 4 so far...

1) Middle Brother - S/T

2) Dawes - Nothing is Wrong

3) DBTs - Go-Go Boots

4) Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones

So far, Dawes is the best of the year (in my book). Love the Middle Brother record too. There's a really nice record out by a band called Deep Vibration. (kinda surprised that there's no love for these guys here)

Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'

Yep - Once

k.d. lang - Sing it Loud

That's all I got for now. I'll check in with more when I think of deserving albums.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, this one, too...

Daniel Romano - Sleep Beneath The Willow

My favorites (in no particular order):

Decemberists

Dawes

Centro-Matic

Fleet Foxes

Kurt Vile

Gillian Welch may sneak in there. I haven't given that album enough listens to decide yet

I can't really name any disappointments. I've heard plenty of "okay" albums, but I didn't expect perfection from those particular artists.

1. The Embracers - Look What I Stole For Us Baby (yeah, my future nephew's the bass player - it's on itunes.)

2. Emmy The Great - Virtue (well, she did thank me on the liner notes.)

3. DBT - Boots (though I kinda wish Patterson would get off the evil preacher kick.)

don't think I've gotten anything else, honestly.

assuming you liked the previous Vile records, how could the new one stack up as a disappointment? if anything, his songwriting's gotten stronger. i really love "on tour' and "runners up"

there are a few really great records so far this year. i like:

blood ceremony - living with the ancients

grails - deep politics

vile - smoke ring

alvarius b - baroque primitiva

mogwai - hardcore will never die but you will

lifeguards (r pollard and d gillard) - waving at the astronauts

It's only a disappointment in terms of the sheer amount of praise it received from critics, friends, VC members, etc. I was excited to hear it and was let down.

Lucinda Williams - Blessed

Really? How? It's so repetitive: she laid her heart down so hard that she forgot to write music.

Top 5 for now:

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Stetson, Colin - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges

Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver

James Blake - James Blake

Destroyer - Kaputt

My list is way too "mainstream" to have any cred here..

Yuck - Yuck

Cults - Cults

Bon Iver - Bon Iver

Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong

Washed Out - Within & Without (Amor Fati!!!)

Fleet Foxes - Hopelessness Blues

Hey Rosetta! - Seeds (Yer Spring is fantastic)

The Antlers - Burst Apart

Just missed the cut:

Devotchka - 100 Lovers (The Alley and All The Sand... are both great songs, but the album falls off too fast after that. Probably the best packaging though.)

I am sure I left something essential out that I'll regret later.

Faves So Far:

The Low Anthem-- Smart Flesh

Jost T. Pearson - Last of the Country Gentlemen

The Decemberists - The King Is Dead

Centro-matic - Candidate Waltz/Will Johnson - Little Raider EP

Charles Bradley - No Time for Dreaming

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo

Robert Ellis - Photographs

Wye Oak - Civilian

Disappointments, which sadly include 3 of my all-time favorite bands:

Okkervil River

Iron and Wine (That "tree by the river" song kills me dead.)

Bon Iver (stunning in part, but includes "Beth/Rest")

My Morning Jacket

Circuital rules, whatever.

I love Circuital too. Why is it getting so much stick? Anyway, along with Circuital, my favs so far are:

Decemberists: King is Dead;

Bon Iver: Bon Iver (and Beth/Rest is great);

and that's about it really. The Decemberists record is very strong.
