Top 5 albums of 2011 so far

Recommended Posts

you love that EMA record of which i love 3 songs and hate the rest ;)

as for Kurt Vile, i can see him not everyones thing, esp. if that is your first exposure to him. much like Dawes he's way way better live.

True. It's funny to me how people with similar tastes (which is how I view this board as compared to the rest of the world) can still differ so strongly. I'm really looking forward to hearing the Handsome Furs album. Loved Face Control.

How about The Strokes - Angles? Probably another disappointment, but I kinda like that record - at least the first half.

The Kills - Blood Pressures - thoughts?

The Strokes wasn't a disappointment for me mainly because I had zero expectations. It's not bad. And I love Blood Pressures.

the new Handsome Furs might not be QUITE as great as Face Control (was my fave album of '08), but still awesome. Pfork gave it an 8.1 today, the highest they've rated a HF album.

i'd agree both The Strokes & Kills were disappointments for me too, good call Dude. i do like BP, but it might be my least fave Kills album.

Disappointments:

Death Cab For Cutie - ouch...

Iron & Wine - A lot of people here seem to dig it but I really think the tunes are lacking compared to his last records and I don't like the production.

The Strokes - Just awful.

TV On The Radio

Bright Eyes

oh yeah... add these to my list too!

i dig the TVOTR quite a bit, and it's still in my top 30 (along w/ Radiohead) so far, but it's my least favorite of their last 3 by far.

as for Death Cab... i didn't expect much after the last 2, but it might be my least favorite of theirs

+1

Love some Daniel Romano.. He needs to get down here to Southern US sometime.. Folks would love him down here.

Yeah he's incredible live (solo and with a band) I've caught him almost ten times since he's started his solo project, such a super nice dude too. My band opened for Attack In Black a year and a bit ago but I really dig his solo stuff so much more.

Yeah I wasn't expecting much out of Death Cab or Bright Eyes either, but sure doesn't mean they didn't suck!

I also didn't dig the Panda Bear record or Lucinda Williams.

I think the new Destroyer album is definitely my favorite from this year so far. Optimistic about the new Wilco record. Low's C'Mon is solid and "Witches" might be one of the best songs this year so far. Need to pick up Bon Iver. Both Decemberists and Iron and Wine records were solid, not amazing, but glad to see they can both still put out things that I enjoy.

never been a HUGE Panda Bear fan so i wasn't let down, but i def am not a big fan of this new one vs. the last one

I love Circuital too. Why is it getting so much stick? Anyway, along with Circuital, my favs so far are:

Decemberists: King is Dead;

Bon Iver: Bon Iver (and Beth/Rest is great);

and that's about it really. The Decemberists record is very strong.

It's really just people on this forum giving it stick.. take a look at the MMj forum, very well received.

the new Thurston Moore record is ridiculously beautiful.

I think I heard him previewing some of the songs on SiriusXMU's live sessions, and one of them was just gorgeous. Damn if I can remember what it is was called, but it was lush and atmospheric and really great.

[*]The Rosebuds - Loud Planes Fly Low[*]

Thank you for mentioning this. I bought it. It's not a great record from start to finish, but it has some high points, and damnit, GO MERGE! (and NC bands!) :cheers

of course the MMJ forum is going to love it, they're mostly all fanboys... :lol

it's a decent album, but it's their 4th or 5th best album at best for me, and i say this as a fan going back to '01

man...based on how many of you are singing the praises of the decemberists' as a top 5 entry, i may have to give it more time. i got it the week it was out on cd and listened to it several times over the course of the next few days on my commute and it really didn't strike me as memorable, so it's now in the cardboard case in my cd collection at home, gathering dust.

guess i'll get it back out.

Not necessarily... plenty of hardcore fans there criticize any direction the band takes, wanting them to sound like It still Moves and Z... just like the hardcore Wilco fans on this site.

the new Thurston Moore record is ridiculously beautiful.

I was surprised that I got kind of bored when I was watching them on Saturday (I think it was more me than it was their performance), but I picked up the record anyway. It sounds great on vinyl--really warm and lush.

I've been buying lots of music this year, but most of it has been older releases, especially since I've only had my record player for six months. Deerhoof vs. Evil is my favorite album of the year so far. I'm going to predict that it will stay in at least my top three and will most likely be joined by the new Wilco and Evangelista albums due out in the fall. I haven't spent enough time with the Low album yet but am holding out hope for that. I also really like Liam Finn's new album.

Radiohead and Bright Eyes have both been complete snoozes for me, neither of which I was expecting. I also wasn't crazy about the new Those Darlins album. I'm having a hard time remembering what other new releases I've bought this year, which I guess should say something about how I've felt about them.

Radiohead - The King of Limbs

Decemberists - The King is Dead

Bon Iver - S/T

The Dodos - No Color

LCD Soundsystem - Live at MSG (yes, not official, but one of the greatest live sets I've ever heard)

Disappointments:

The Strokes

Have But Haven't Spun Yet:

Fleet Foxes

Low

I'd be shocked if that didn't get a CD/DVD release by Christmas. I think James tweeted that it's in the works. While musically maybe not the best concert I've ever been to, it was an incredible spectacle, not to mention that it was amazing to see an arena that big jam-packed with people who were deliriously happy.
