One Sunday Morning (Song For Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)

Recommended Posts

After a few listens of the new album this is easily my favorite track. This might be one of the best songs Jeff has ever written IMO. Anyone take a stab at the lyrics? I gave it a go, but it's a bit tough.

This is how I’ll tell him

Oh, but its long

One Sunday Morning

Oh, one son is gone

Against silhouette of dawn (?)

Over the sea

My father said what I had become

Oh, what should be

Outside I look clued in

Like the poems in a shrine

How am I forgiven

Oh, I get time

This I learned without wondering

Over my bow(?)

In time you thought I would kill him

Oh, but I didn't know how

I said its your God I don’t believe in

No, your bible cant be true

Knocked down by the long life

He cried I fear what waits for you

I can hear those bells

Spoken and gone (?)

I feel relief, I feel well

Now he knows he was wrong

Hang him cold for my father

Frozen underground

Jesus I wouldn't bother

He belongs to me now

Something sad keeps moving

So I, wander around

I fell in love with the burden

Holding me down

Bless my mind I miss

Being told how to live

What I learned without knowing

How much more that I owe than I can give

This is how I tell him

Oh, but its long

One Sunday Morning

One son is gone

Courtesy of Knotgreen, Via Buffalo, Kidsmoke and maybe others who have gotten started on the lyrics, I am transcribing what sounds like the correct version, but with still a couple of places where I'm unsure:

Oh, but its long

One Sunday morning

Oh, one son is gone

Against silhouetted dawning

Over the sea

My father said what I had become

No one should be

Outside I look lived in

Like the bones in a shrine

How am I forgiven?

Oh, I get time

This I learned without wandering (warning?)

Holding my brow (?)

In time you thought I would kill him

Oh, but I didn't know how

I said it's your God I don’t believe in

No, your Bible can't be true

Knocked down by the long life (light?)

He cried I fear what waits for you

Like a few others, I didn't close the window where the album was streaming, so I can continue to play just this one song over and over again. I guess when I need to reboot my computer I'll lose it, but till then it's going to be in heavy rotation.

Thanks for the fix! The guys really conjured up a keeper with this one. It's pure magic. (I'm so glad they use their powers for good.) To my ears, though, it sounds like "how I'll tell it" at the beginning and end, and maybe "long lie" in the 5th verse.

We'll just have to wait another three long weeks to find out for sure.

I must admit I'm not (yet?) fully convinced by the other two slow, accoustic numbers on the record (Black Moon and Rising Red Lung) but this one has it all- story line, melody, hooky riff, sonic detail, and after 12 minutes you're perfectly happy going back and playing it again. This may be one of the strongest things Wilco has ever done.

Certainly to me it is in the Top 10

but lust us remember it is the Honeymoon period... It will be interesting if our comments hold up in 3 yrs but hell

Im really Loving the depth and smooth sound of it, along w/those well crafted lyrics!

you're absolutely right which is why i said "may" and not "will" or "i can assure you that in 100 years this will be studies in music history classes."

Do you think they will be playing this one live? I certainly hope so but I get the sense it might be one of those songs that makes rare appearances.

i hope so too, but i think it will be a jeff solo staple for sure.

Well with the reaction it's getting if they do the online request thing again, One Sunday Morning will certainly be in demand.

I'd hope a lot of this album works it way into

the live sets. They can pull the quieter stuff off, hell I've heard them open with Radio Cure before. A lot of these songs will translate well live I think.

I requested it for both Massey Hall shows. Right now "OSM" and "Whole Love" are my favourite tracks. Opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. And I love how one follows the other to bring the record to a close.
