jw harding
Read somewhere that Pole Guy is a real estate agent and refused to be interviewed for the making of documentary that was released with Sunshine Daydream. He probably has family, and I can understand the embarrassment, but what a great day that must've been for him. You gotta own that.
mountain bed
i decided to check out some '93 shows over the last few days. started at the beginning. interestingly they did a run in oakland in both january and february of 93. lucky west coast heads. the sbds are interesting, but just so sterile. it's almost like the band is not really playing together, but random parts tacked together. everyone is a little off. no one is really playing badly. garcia is singing well and playing pretty good. nothing amazing, but not fucking up. just slow. vince is just all over the place. i put up with him seeing the band live, but he just doesn't fit. of course, bob is doing all that goofy distorted rhythm stuff. anyway, there were some gems that year that i have yet to revisit. i remember the chapel hill shows being really good. airy and good humored, not so stuffy like the afformentioned tunes. i really wish they'd take some time and find some usable tunes from the last 4 years, edit them a bit and mix them a la Without a Net. i guess they'll get there when the well runs dry.I know what you're talking about. I think it is an unfortunate bi-product of those in-ear monitors they started using around that time. Everyone is listening more to themselves than everyone else and it doesn't quite gel much of the time. That said, the 5/26 Playin' that Shug mentioned, and the 6/23 Jam out of Terrapin are imo the best things from the whole year, and arguably the last times IT appeared onstage. Right, the in-ear monitors totally were part of the problem. Now, that 5/26 Playin' is ridiculous. 6/23 was a great show all around. I saw most of that summer tour. 9/13/93 is also incredible. The predrums is probably the last great set the band ever played. Everything was played correctly as well as jammed out. Garcia hit every change in each song. That's not even mention the song list. I mean, are you kidding me?! This show will probably get released officially some day. I remember hearing by word of mouth how awesome this show was only days after. worldrecordplayer
I remember hearing by word of mouth how awesome this show was only days after. Before the internet really caught on, us Heads somehow communicated with each other. It was the WELL, in its pre-world wide web DOS based bulletin board days. They say there were 2 groups who took to the Internet in its earliest incarnations: NASA engineers/scientists, and Deadheads. And before I found the WELL, it was Terrapin Station, a dial up BB run by Captain Trips out of Connecticut.

calvino
Listening to 12/30/78 tonight -- very nice show. It's kinda interesting that this show is in LA and not at the Winterland --- looks like Tom Petty got the 2nd to last show at Winterland on 12/30/78.

worldrecordplayer
Just finished watching the movie Muscle Shoals. Highly recommended. Donna is one of the musicians interviewed in the film. I never knew she sang on Percy Sledge's When A Man Loves A Woman. I always knew she sang with Elvis, but never knew she was a Muscle Shoals singer as well. Ironic that with those accomplishments she went on to grate on many a Deadhead's ear ( not mine). Sent from my Windows Phone using Tapatalk

Mr. Heartbreak
Do any of you Deadhead fanatics know much about the Dylan/Dead tour? I have been working my way through the Club Front rehearsals (which are really enjoyable, by the way), and now I'm getting through the first set of a show at JFK Stadium in July 1987. I had thought that the Dead did a set of songs without Dylan and then a set of songs with Dylan, but I could swear I hear Dylan adding harmony vocals right from the get-go on Iko Iko and Jack Straw. Do my ears deceive me? Either way, sounds like Dylan had a great time playing with these guys, which you would never guess from the relatively tepid Dylan/Dead disc from that tour. Lammycat
They only did 6 shows together that tour. I caught 2 (Foxboro and Giants) and it was Dylan and the GD after GD did a show, first. I remember the GD opening 2nd set at Giant's w/ The Dew..... ed. My mind ain't what it used to be.
Lammycat
In '86 Dylan would do a set then GD (or vice versa and with Petty& Heartbreakers opening). Those shows were pretty tepid. Caught the RFK shows and they were pretty week. Not to mention hot as balls. Not to mention Garcia went into a diabetic coma shortly after the last show.
Mr. Heartbreak
Ok, thanks. That explains it. The '86 setup (Dylan, then Dead) was what I was familiar with. I didn't expect to hear Dylan on the Dead tunes, just the Dead playing behind all of Dylan's tunes.

I didn't expect to hear Dylan on the Dead tunes, just the Dead playing behind all of Dylan's tunes. That's what it was in '87. Basically, a Dead show (minus encore) and then Dylan came out and did his tunes w/ the Dead backing him.
Mr. Heartbreak
It's just kind of funny hearing Dylan coming in on Jack Straw during the refrain. I was like, "Is that Dylan, or does Phil sound all froggy and whatnot?" It was first thing this morning on my way to work, which made it that much more surreal. Even the Club Front rehearsals don't feature Dylan on any Grateful Dead songs, from what I recall.
Lammycat
Wait. I'm confused. Dylan was not sitting in on any GD sets/tunes in '87, that I recall. It was a full GD show (two sets) and then a break and then Dylan would come out and do his tunes with the GD backing him. In '86 the GD would do condensed sets with Dylan joining in on parts. It shouldn't be Dylan on Jack Straw, is what I'm getting at.
