linclink
For me there is no question about it, just as Robyn Hitchcock rules the roost for Halloween/Samhain (though he's released a formal theme album, the number of appropriate songs is incredible), for the absolute King Kong King Of Christmas is Sufjan Stevens with his two Box Sets "Songs From Christmas" and "Silver & Gold". What I appreciate the most are the incredible original songs, but his re-workings of classics, both well & lesser known holiday songs is almost as compelling...and...the essays/liner notes are great too.Absolute Fave~"Songs From Christmas"- Sufjan Stevens~"Silver & Gold"- Sufjan StevensTop Shelf~A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector"- Various Artists (Produced By Phil Spector)~A Light Of The Stable"- Emmylou Harris~"Charlie Brown Christmas"- Vince Guaraldi Trio~"The Beatles Christmas Album"- The Beatles (all their Christmas Messages for the fan clubs collected into an album that the fan club sent out, but was never a commercial release, though often bootlegged)Also Great~"Christmas With Johnny Cash"- Johnny Cash~"James Brown's Funky Christmas"- James Brown~"Ultimate Chrismas"- The Beach Boys~"If Every Day Were Like Christmas"- Elvis Presley~"Christmas Collection"- The Carpenters~"The Magic Of Christmas"- Nat King Cole~"An Oscar Peterson Christmas"- Oscar Peterson~"The McGarrigle Christmas Hour"- Kate & Anna McGarrigle~Quality Street"- Nick Lowe~"The 25th Day Of December"- The Staples Singers~"Pretty Paper"- Willie Nelson~"We Three Kings"- The Roches

choo-choo-charlie
For classic stuff, Charlie Brown Christmas, Vince Guaraldi Trio. For a more modern take (but still with a classic sound), the She & Him tracks are pretty great.
bleedorange
I'll second the Sufjan Stevens sets. Also:The Anita Kerr Singers - Spend This Holiday With Me Although I mainly listen to barbershop choruses' Christmas albums. My dad sang for a chorus (Heart of Texas) and their album is probably my favorite. And anything from the Vocal Majority, which is based in Dallas, and probably the best chorus in the country. There are also some albums from various quartets that are really good too. And there are a ton of songs that I'll shuffle through. I love Christmas music.
Winston Legthigh
I like both of the Sufjan sets, but find myself listening to the first collection way more. The 2nd one gets a little too weird now and then.
NoJ
The Mighty Blue Kings "The Christmas Album". This just may be the hippest, coolest album of xmas tunes ever. Seriously, it swings.
NoJ
"Hillbilly Holiday" released in 1990 from Rhino is another great xmas album. I also have a recording of Bob Dylans radio show where he spun all kinds of xmas tunes. Its a classic, we listen to it every year. Well worth seeking out.
Lammycat
Dylan's satellite show is a treat. I've only heard it a couple times as I don't have satellite service. Either way, his "Hava Nagila" is awesome....
Chez
My go-to Christmas CD is the one put out by Low. I also enjoy the Sufjan Stevens discs (1st collection) and the Nick Lowe's Quality Street.

dagwave
Sufjan's stuff has been doing the heavy lifting around here for the last couple of years, i even love the "weird' stuff depending on the time of night and what may be in the eggnog.... James Brown Funky Christmas rules the roost as well. I even have a soft spot for the Partridge Family Christmas, Kenny and Dolly, Hanson, and Boxcar Willie, too. "Ringing the Bells for Jim" by Johnny Cash gets me every time. And I dig the Weezer and Pretenders holiday stuff mightily. And the classics: Motown, Chess, Stevie, Spector, Vince Guaraldi, Beach Boys and of course, ELVIS.Love me some Xmas tunes! great thread.
