TCP
Stephen Malkmus...this easily goes to the top of my list. The new Jicks album is called Sparkle Hard, comes out May 18th (same day as Courtney Barnett, calm down May!!) and has an awesome new single called Shiggy.

brownie
Yep - I was digging into their catalogue trying to decide where to start, so I pre-ordered that a couple weeks ago. Can't wait to hear it! As a Calexico fan who started with The Black Light back when it was released, I am very interested to hear the thoughts of someone who discovered the band with the Thread That Keeps Us. They are a completely different band now, so I am truly curious to hear your thoughts on the old stuff.

Trust me you'll like it too. http://www.casadecalexico.com/welcome/the-black-light-20th/yep. that's their best record. the first time i saw Calexico was pretty early on, and they invited Pinetop 7 to get on stage for the last song, a brilliant runthrough of this. i've never seen them play it again. sad face. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-dBJ7lYv44
theashtraysays
It wasn't anticipated, or even known about (at least by me), but I am really loving this new version of Masseduction by St. Vincent. It's all vocals out in front of a lone piano. Awesome. Had it on repeat since Friday.
tinnitus photography
gotta say that this Ethers record is quite good. certainly not groundbreaking but will appeal to fans of bands like The Clean, Parquet Courts, etc. https://open.spotify.com/album/46TJDtMocf9tN9l2AGZl2C?si=pxTylNBWRya5smCh0_frOw

Winston Legthigh
Masseduction by St. Vincent. Freudian slip?
theashtraysays
Masseduction by St. Vincent. Freudian slip? Certainly could have been. But the original album was called "Masseduction" (as in mass seduction), the same as one of the tracks. And the re-release was called "Masseducation". Apparently she bought the extra "a". The track on the new release is still called masseduction, fwiw. I still can't look at the album cover without thinking of one of the answer cards from Cards Against Humanity which is "Tasteful sideboob".

I have seen Calexico many times, but never got to see them play this. I have a live recording that even blows this recording out of the water. Whatever happened to that Calexico? sad face. tinnitus photography
yeah it's a bit of a drag.i did an interview w/ Howe Gelb some years back and we talked about Joey a bit at the end... i ended up not putting it in the published piece but should probably post the full version sometime... he basically said that Joey felt like he needed a go at the brass ring and took Howe's drummer along for the ride. i don't think Howe was bitter about it (though i'm sure he felt bitter at the time), just that they had different expectations of their place in the music industry.
