A couple albums from down under top my list:
Salad Boys and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

not necessarily in that order, but not necessarily NOT in that order, either.

Others that I liked:

Klaus Johann Grobe

Ohmme

Tom Zé

Domenico Lancellotti

Joe Pisapia

Reissues/compilations/archival:
Dur-Dur Band - Dur-Dur of Somalia, Vols. 1 & 2

Various - African Scream Contest 2

John Coltrane - Both Directions at Once

Leon Bridges
Parquet Courts
Beck
Jayhawks
Decemberist
David Byrne

That David Byrne was probably the most-disappointing new album that I've heard this year.

Neko Case - Hell-On

I heard a song on the way to work this morning by Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles. I'd never heard of her/her band before. Listened to a few more tracks during planning time and looked her up on the google machine. From Boston area, apparently.

Good stuff.

Oh, apparently they have  a new album that came out a month or 2 ago I need to hear....

I have to add Adam's House Cat - Town Burned Down to my list. Just picked it up the other night. This pre-Drive By Truckers album holds up with Patterson Hood's best material despite being recorded a decade before Southern Rock Opera, when Hood was just in his early 20s. Unfortunately the album wasn't released, and the tapes were lost, and then much later rediscovered, and the record finally came out this year.

I don't have a definitive ranking this year, but here are my favorites in no order:

  • Josh Rouse – Love in the Modern Age
  • Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour
  • Courtney Barnett – Tell Me How You Really Feel
  • Natalie Prass – The Future and the Past
  • Salad Boys – This is Glue
  • Jim James – Uniform Distortion
  • Kurt Vile – Bottle it In
  • Mark Knopfler – Down the Road Wherever
  • Elvis Costello – Look Now
  • Jeff Tweedy – Warm
  • White Denim – Performance
  • Snail Mail – Lush
  • J Mascis – Elastic Days

That's high praise!   DBT is one of my favorite bands, so I'll have to check this out.

The band didn't even have it for sale at their merch table last night, so I don't have the album yet, but the songs the Old 97s played from their new Christmas album are actually really good. Particularly Snow Angels.

I'm not going to make a list.  Every time I try, I end up with a bunch of records that actually came out the previous year.  So I'll just say my favorite album of the year is:

Sam Evian:  You Forever

The top 10

• Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – Hope Downs

• Ohmme – Parts
• Klaus Johann Grobe - Du bist so symmetrisch
• The Chills - Snow Bound
• Domenico Lancellotti - The Good is a Big God
• Elza Soares - Deus É Mulher
• Lucy Dacus – Historian
• Tom Zé - Sem Voce Não A
• The Breeders - All Nerve

Just missed the top 10:

• Safespace - Keep Quiet
• Ought – Room Inside the World
• The Sea and Cake - Any Day
• thisishowitendedintokyo - april(s)in
• Joe Pisapia – Connection

Archival/Comps that I loved:

• Various Artists - African Scream Contest 2
• Dur-Dur Band – Dur-Dur of Somalia: Vol. 1, Vol. 2, & Previously Unreleased Tracks
• John Coltrane - Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album

Need more listens, but had top 10 potential:
• Native Cats - John Sharp Toro
• Hollow Hand - Star Chamber
• JC Autobody – Witches
• The Ocean Party - The Oddfellows' Hall
• Ultimate Painting - Up!

And, of course, there is a lot that I just did not hear (like Jeff's new one). Or, at least did not hear enough to merit consideration.

• Ohmme – Parts

I just discovered this band. Good stuff!  Have you heard their previous record from 2017?  I picked up both at the same time and I've only been able to listen to them once each.  So far I like the first one a little better, but both are really good.

Will check out more from your list.  We have had similar tastes in the past.
